A little gem
I would be hard pushed to fault our round today, friendly staff on arrival before heading out onto the immaculately kept course. Greens were short and ran well, fairways are wide and the views all around are stunning. What a way to spend a summers evening hopefully more to come.
Great surprise
Played 9 holes on this course for the first time on 29.06.20. I live quite locally and have seen it online many times but I think the fact it’s 10 holes has put me off in the past. Well don’t let it! I won’t in future! It’s an absolute gem of a course. Staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival as were other players on the course. The condition of the course and greens was absolutely brilliant. I’ve played many courses and was very impressed with this one all round. A variety of challenges in length and undulations and a good challenge for all levels of player. And the amazing views were a bonus. I understand the course has been under new management for a year or so and was told that there has been significant improvements on course and a newly refurbished club house (opening this Sat following CV19) and I will certainly check this out when I play there again soon!. I will be playing this course often from now on and would definitely recommend to all.
Stanedge
10 hole course on the moors between chesterfield and matlock. Not hilly surprisingly as it is very much 'on the tops'. Like many such courses it can be quite unforgiving as 10-20 yards off the fairway and the ball is lost in deep rough , brambles or woods. Greens not championship but as expected for a high moorland course. It has recently been bought out and the new team are doing very well at improving all aspects. The clubhouse is newly refurbished and all amenities clean and very nice.. reasonably stocked bar and range of hot and cold food available and all staff very friendly and welcoming. Small putting green and 150 yard practice ground and electric trolleys also available. No buggies though as some aspects of the pathways and such not conducive to such but this may change as they do have plans to continue the improvements all round.
Finally the views are spectacular so if your golf is failing you just enjoy the views!!!
Turned up today 11/08/2019 no staff were present at the course. Having no scorecard or map of the course it was very difficult to navigate your way round. Defo give this a miss in the future
Hidden gem!
A quirky, 10 hole moorland course off the beaten track with 8 holes being played twice from different tees. The course provides a true test and contains a variety of holes that necessitate straight hitting as the rough can be unforgiving. New ownership has resulted in an upgrade of off-course facilities particularly, and on-course improvements with lush fairways and fairly quick, true greens. Spectacular views are provided from the top of the course over Chesterfield and well beyond. Well worth a visit.
Gone downhill
A quirky heathland course that has 10 holes, eight of which are played twice. Played here a couple of times before and enjoyed the experience. However, since last visiting, the course has been taken over by South Chesterfield Golf Club and has gone downhill due to an apparent lack of care? Fairways were in good condition but previous pristine greens had been hollow tined and heavily sanded to cover bare patches that made the experience disappointing. The club house was closed on departure and a trip to nearby Ashover was the 19th hole alternative.
Hidden gem
The course is off the beaten track down a narrow road and is best described as quirky! There is an honesty box for green fees and a visitors' book to sign inside the clubhouse. Saw no-one connected with the Club beforehand and only green keepers on course. Despite the wet weather, proper greens were in play and in excellent condition although expectation was to play off fairway mats; alternatively to do without from light rough. There are just 10 holes; 8 are played twice and the other 2 just once. Despite this, holes represent a good mix and the views over Chesterfield and beyond are stunning. There was no-one manning the 19th hole but despite its obvious limitations this course is a hidden gem and well worth a visit; certainly we will be going back - again and again!
