Slow and congested

Having read a lot of positive reviews, me and my playing partner were very disappointed with our experience at whitburn. Firstly, it must be said that the layout of the course is terrible. Many holes are simply back and forwards with tees close to greens and lots of waiting for tees or greens to clear. I realise that there's only so much you can do with fitting an 18 hole golf course onto a relatively small piece of hillside. However there could certainly be more thought given to the positioning of tee boxes or even shielding of them, or defining different holes with trees or fencing.

The pace of play was about the slowest I have encountered, but to be fair this was just caused by 1 horrendous 4ball with everyone else stacked up behind them getting more and more angry.

The greens were in pretty poor condition. Lots of sand, lots of bobbling putts. It is early November but the weather has been decent with the greens on other local courses in much better condition.

In summary, not remotely worth £17 for a round and I'm totally confused by the fact that this place has so many good reviews.

Wilburn views

Enjoyable experience. Friendly welcome, great views of the coast across to Tynemouth priory and South Shields. Course itself was in good condition in view of ongoing hot Weather, fast true greens on the day.toilet signs need improvement but aside from that 2 happy people.

Hidden gem

Finally decided to try this course, wish we had done so earlier, at first sight looked reasonably easy, but almost every hole was challenging the staff and members very welcoming. We will be be back and hopefully our society will give it a go.

Relaxing round.

Good course. Very open and the rough was down due to the hot dry weather. Greens in good condition with some interesting borrows.

The run of Par 5's in the middle is a bit boring but made up for by the finishing holes across the road by the sea. Stunning views.

Canny course, friendly players.

Really like Whitburn. The course is well laid out. As you'd expect being on the coast it tends to be windy but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment.

An all year round gem

As it had rained heavily overnight, I was expecting some standing water. It was also very windy on the day so we didn't think conditions were conducive for a good score. After getting acclimatised to the wind, by about the third hole, we started to relax and I have to say thoroughly enjoyed the round. The course was amazingly dry after all the overnight rain and played beautifully. I play off 18 and had never played it before. My partner, 25 handicap, was a local so had played it many times. We both ended up with 34 points which, with the gale force winds, felt more like 40 points.

Stunning views and a really challenging well kept coastal gem.

Fair to middling

Club house and surrounds a bit messy, course fairly unspectacular, not the stiffest of tests but for £14 not bad.

Decent course but seems a little

It's a decent course some cracking views especially the back 9. I just feel that some of the holes are too close together on the front 9, holes 8 through to 11.
