Good course but bad bunkers
The course is well kept and has an interesting layout. I enjoyed playing and would again but the bunkers were unplayable at times. Most had very thin layers of sand, and the sand had lots of pebbles and stones as if it was from a beach. If the bunkers were fixed I'd come a lot more
Best course in the area
Played a few courses nearby and woolston manor is without doubt the best value for money. Good condition with some really interesting holes- would recommed!
Woolston manor course review
Was easy to find & very accessible from most routes in
Course was well looked after, especially the greens they was very consistent in pace
The staff were all very friendly & welcoming
Overall was a great place to play & value for money was excellent
Fashionably Challenging
This is the second time I play this course, and I was sort of surprised why I cannot remember anything but the first hole. Soon, I realised that this course cannot be remembered that easy unless one plays it few times. There are so many dog legs, bunkers and natural features, which must have completely confused my brain the first time. I do not know who designed Woolston Manor, but I must say they have done very well. Part of it uniqueness and beauty is river that runs through it.
I found the course really challenging, I do not want to be understood wrongly, so I will add charmingly challenging. There are so many bunkers, dog legs and lateral hazards, and the course makes you think about every stroke.
The quality of the greens and fairways is close to perfect. There are some GUR areas, but I could tell that the club is in a process of upgrading the course.
Number 19 is also very nice. There is a big TV screen in the outside area (enormous), with supper comfy garden furniture and a pool. Absolutely brilliant place to have a refreshing and well deserved pint, after being morally trashed by the intelligence of this beautiful course.
As a person who has played most golf courses of Herts, North and North East London, I would give Woolston Manor 9 out of 10. 9 because, I have not been to a place that stroke me with a 10 yet.
I definitely recommend this course and I will definitely get back there!!!!
All the best!
Beautiful course, rough around the edges
Lovely layout and a real pleasure to play. There are beautiful holes all over the course and challenges from the tee and fairway. Just avoid the bunkers (very shallow, compacted sand which left its mark on my wedges!), the large areas of barren ground around on some holes and dial in your game from 140 yards in beforehand. Will definitely come back again and again.
Improvements have been made but more to do.
Haven’t been here for 2 years.
Love the lay out.
Greens have improved but bunkers need some sand in them.
Always enjoyable
Slow play
I booked a t time for 3 people and on arrival 1 person was put into our group. Play was very slow took 4 hours to play 13 holes , eventually walked off once we saw 6 people waiting on the 14th.
Course in fair condition apart from bunkers won’t be coming back
Great value golf
Nice course with "resort" feel.
Only small gripe is having to putt around all the bird (geese) $#%t.
Awesome golf course
This lovely picturesque golf course has everything i enjoy on a golf course. Plenty of thinking required for shot placements but also opportunities to open your shoulders and attack. Fairways and greens are well maintained although the bunkers were bare and grainy. I went midweek and the clubhouse was closed before we finished at 7pm so didnt get to enjoy a drink afterwards which was a shame but very much enjoyed the golf. Highly recommended!
OK course bunkers need work
Course was quite firm I guess due to lack of rain. Greens were slow but ran true. Only real criticism bunkers around greens need more sand. Near impossible to play a proper bunker shot as Club just bounced on a hard base with just a dusting of sand. As this course has a great deal of bunkers would need to see this addresses before I would return again. Price of round for a Saturday was good value however.
Woolston BUNKERS
Come on Woolston, this could be a really decent course but get some proper sand in the bunkers. Worst sand I’ve seen in Essex. There’s rocks about 3” x 2”. the rest is between sharp sand and ballast.
This is not exaggerating either……
Great course
Very nice course, a bit challenging as there are plenty of Bunkers and Water hazards but it makes it really nice!
Woolston Manor
Second time I’ve played this course. It has some interesting holes and is a good challenge, however it could do with a bit of TLC. The greens are very bumpy and slow and the many many bunkers could do with a freshen up (I.e put a bit of sand in them). The entrance to the club itself is quite grand and considering they call themselves a country club, they could really do with sprucing the place up a little throughout.
Interesting course
This is a nice course layout with friendly staff. My only issue with it is there are about 100 bunkers with very little sand in making things pretty difficult. Sand is very compact and almost every green is guarded by bunkers. If they fix the quality of the bunkers then this course would be a lot more enjoyable.
