Don’t Play Chastain
The course was truly in horrible condition. Greens and tee boxes were burnt out, several greens were very damaged and areas repaired with sand strips. The staff was completely unfriendly and unhelpful. There was 2 and 4 inch piles of glass grass clippings on some of the fairways. They need to get their act together.
Course in bad shape
For a traditional course in Atlanta, they have maintained it poorly. Maybe I’ll try it next year.
Prime location in Buckhead, beautiful trees and stunning views of Atlanta
The tee boxes are not well kept and look bad.
The fairways, approach areas and greens are not cut or maintained properly. The greens are in particularly bad shape. The numerous geese are allowed to run wild, and their manure is everywhere, including on many of the greens. Literally had to clear a path to putt through manure on several greens!
This is an embarrassment for the city of Atlanta! GA in internationally recognized as the golf capital of the world, many people including senior executives and dignitaries from all over the country, and the world come here and want to play public courses inside the beltline and choose Chastain, only to face disappointment in the course maintenance and lack of an attractive restaurant/bar, pro shop and related services. (Compare Chastain with the Stone Mountain facilities). ATLANTA is missing a great opportunity to showcase! The MAYOR NEEDS TO TAKE NOTE.
Greens are brown
I just played this course two weeks ago and the greens were ok, but yesterday it was nearly unplayable. Greens are brown and burned out.
COURSE CONDITION and POTENTIAL
* Tee boxes are sub- standard and should be improved
* Fairways need substantial improvement
* Greens consistency is unpredictable, some slow and some fast
* Maintenance of grass and overall condition of the course and clubhouse is substandard. The overall condition of the course is an embarrassment for the city of Atlanta.
* Chastain should be recognized nationally/internationally as a superb public golf course in keeping with Georgia's reputation as a golf mecca, i.e. The world-famous Masters Tournament and the home of Bobby Jones.
* Remodel the clubhouse to include good food service, an upscale pro shop and practice facilities. An attractive "Nineteenth Hole "
* City needs to assign management of entire course to a third-party group, like Bobby Jones Foundation to improve the quality of experience. A more professional, golf-oriented staff would be a plus.
* Raise the prices and expand the appeal - too cheap now
* Glad to see new practice cages to replace lack of driving range
Too bad service
Even if you are told that you cannot play golf due to rain and are turned away, no refunds or rain checks will be issued at a later date.
You won’t be able to have a proper conversation even if you call them.
Poor course conditions
While the layout could be excellent and the staff were friendly, the condition of the course was terrible. Most tee blocks had little grass, the fairways were littered with weeds and the rough had not been cut for a long time. The greens were also in bad shape but not as bad as the rest of the course.
Very Sad decline over the years
Course seems to have hit an all time low. Would now put this on par with steel canyon. Greens look like my grandparents carpet that hasn’t been washed in over a decade. Water/ irrigation systems blowing mid putt on 6. Wedges bouncing 3/4 feet in the air and going over the green. Driest course I have ever seen. In all seriousness, this course is better off being torn down and converted into something more useful for the Atlanta area.
Below average
Parking is terrible. Staff is friendly and helpful. Refreshments and food options are non existent to poor. No golf cart coolers or ice. They load every tee time with 4 players so the pace is slow and crowded. No sand to fill divots.
Course needs some work
- Par 5 2nd hole seemed to have some tall grass in the fairway.
- Certain Tee boxes (White) were rough, bare, and some were uneven.
I now the greens fees are low but some work could be put into these areas to improve the golfer’s experience.
City of Atlanta needs to do better
Course in much better shape last year. Tee boxes were all dirt. Greens patchy and dirt filled. City of Atlanta needs to do better. Put some money into this, it can be a great course in a beautiful setting.
Two front problem at Chastain
So I really don’t like to give a bad review to a municipal course that’s close to my house - at the end of the day, Chastain is really the only 18 hole spot I can get to within 20 minutes. That said, Chastain is in a really tough spot with two issues: 1) the layout of some of these golf holes is absolutely dreadful (which they can only minimally control) and 2) the course conditions are as bad as I’ve ever seen them
1) a lot of this is fixed and sort of the nature of the course. That said, some tee box shifting (e.g on hole 2, just move it to the right) would go a long way. Next step would be some tree control, but I’m assuming that’s out of budget. Again, this is frustrating, but a bit fixed
2) the conditioning though, good lord. I understand that rain has been bad lately in ATL, but the course is basically a quagmire. Greens are rolling at about a 5 on the stimp, and you basically are going to have trouble finding your ball regardless of where you hit it because it’s so unkempt. While point 1 is annoying, point 2 makes the course almost unplayable right now.
Really tough because I want to believe in this course being so close to me, but at the moment I just wouldn’t recommend playing it.
