Encino at Sepulveda Golf Complex

Some 4some group who should not be on a full size full length course like this held up everybody after lunch!!! We got stuck behind a couple other groups who waited with us on every hole as we watched this beginner group who sprayed the ball every which way but straight, and then parked the carts in all the wrong places and then proceeded to try to putt everything out after hitting a dozen shots just to get to the green!!! Zero concept of golf or golf etiquette, no concept of trying to play faster, no concept of ready golf, but out there to drive the cart nilly-willy while making the rest of the course wait for them to try to move forward, all the groups behind them were stacked 3 to 4 groups on every hole after them!!! And nobody came out to help. Nobody did anything. That group didn’t even have the common decency of the concept of letting the group behind go head!!!

This is what’s become of golf!!!

It’s the saddest thing ever.

And to top it off, the course is TRASHED. It rained a whole week ago, and they haven’t touched the BUNKERS since, just letting them get hard packed and leaving them as is. So of course some are packed like concrete and the other ones that had no sand to begin with are packed dirt. It’s been a week!!! And they have not bothered to do anything to the bunkers. These are CITY EMPLOYEES getting paid to do nothing. They are taking pay checks hole for not doing anything. Not only should the employees be replaced so should the managers in greenkeeping.

The greens are all different from one to the next. Some cut some not some fast some slow.

It is atrocious what’s happening to golf in the government-run municipal courses everywhere. They are cheating everybody while stealing money from the public

Whole course was overly watered, especially around the greens, they were still extra wet and spongy. The lawnmower guys had ripped through some of the wet areas and left massive tire tracks dug deep into the mud!!! in so many places, it’s so sad how they don’t take good care of their own place.

Greens were all different from one green to the next, all diffent speeds and mow lengths, the last few holes were all so thick and spongy.

The bunkers!!! Just depressing. Not raked, most STILL have no new sand, lots of them growing grass. So many areas should just be roped off to grow back, like the whole right side of hole 3 green, the bunker left of hole 17 green, these have probably never been raked in 10 years.

They did however punch and level off many of the tee boxes. Why can they do that do the dead dirt areas?? Punch them, rope them off, grow them back. Especially around those greens.

Course was nice 2 weeks ago, and I guess because it was OK, they decided to slack off

Teeing off just before Noon, I never imagined that it would take only 90 minutes to play the front and then 2 hours for the back for a total of 3 hours and 30!! Sure it was a bit warm but it wasn’t scorching, it was kinda nice actually with a couple strong breezes that came through.

A few greens had been punched with small holes a week ago so, such as 1 and 10, which need a few more days to fully recover but weren’t too bad today. Rest of the greens were kinda soft and spongy.

Tee boxes are GREAT.

Most of the fairways were decent, except for may be 14 and 16 that need watering, they are looking brown and thin. Rest of course is in really good shape mostly with a decent amount of rough around the greens if you go to the side or back.

Bunkers were mostly raked so they were playable, albeit a bit crusty in most of them from the watering overnight that dried them out into caked mud.

At least it’s in better shape than Rancho or Griffith Park!

First time playing the Encino side, way better than the other connected course! The fairways were nice, greens were smooth and in great shape.

I was pretty surprised to tell you the truth, wasn't sure what to expect but it exceeded my expectations. I'm playing there again in about an hour!!

Fairway bunkers are quietly but surely being removed LOL

So many have disappeared over the last 5 years since Covid to accommodate the new hackers who are filling the courses, to keep them happy by making the courses easier the fairway bunkers are being filled or are on the way to disappearing to just become a rough mound area to the side LOL which is ridiculous really, golf is becoming a joke at muni levels, robbing people of the opportunity to actually play normal golf giving them the wrong impression that they are decent players because they don’t have to encounter any hazards or penalty areas such as bunkers and boundaries nor even actual thick rough like courses used to actually have back in the day.

Anyway….. there is good grass to hit off at least, mostly, compared to the disaster I faced at Los Verdes last week.

Greens are ok, not too fast, kinda thicker on the back 9 so it won’t break nor roll out properly but there ya go, another easy feature they’re setting up to help the hacker golfers LOL

Played at Encino golf course, public course that is one of the better ones here in the LA area. They have covered driving range, a LARGE chipping area (about the size of 3 greens) and they have a large area to work on bunker shots and pitch shots. On top of that they have 2 putting areas. Impressive for a public course. The course itself is pretty much the same for each hole, long fairway with bunkers near the green. I would say majority of the holes were par 4's and a few par 5's and par 3's. I'd recommend this for beginner to intermediate golfers.
