The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Shot makers course
1st time on this PGA West course. Many of the greens sit up surrounded by deep bunkers, some sand, some deep grass bunkers. You need to play the correct tees for your game to be able to carry to the greens. Not many holes with a clear run up to the front. So finding yourself in an 8 foot deep green side bunker can be very challenging. The course is in good shape, turning to the summer Bermuda grass, with the heat dying off the winter rye overseed. It looks brown in spots, but that’s desert golf in the heat season. Cooler with ice on the cart provided, with 4 bottles of water to start.
The Tournament Course never disappoints
The Tournament Course was in great shape. The pace of play was better than normal. The course is well manicured. Staff was helpful and friendly. I would recommend this course.

Great value
As Canadians every USD is 35% higher so we are very price conscientious, and when we found the deal for the Nicklaus course on Tee off we immediately booked it for $77 per player vs what we paid back in Feb, like 4xs! It was definitely beyond value! Holes are not tricked up but definitely target golf! We played twice already for that price.

Must Play
You can not complain when you get the opportunity to play a PGA tournament course. Conditions were very good, course was challenging, and the pace of play was great. The staff really made you feel welcome and appreciated. A must play course and I will be back.

Just an OK course
Practice area and clubhouse are 10/10. I felt the course had a lot of the same shots which got a bit repetitive after a while. Bunkers were in very poor condition with the fairway bunkers severely lacking sand. Almost like concrete with a dusting of sand on top. Sandwich at the turn was the worst I have ever had in my 20 years of golf. Dry Turkey with packets of mustard on the side. Expected much more from a facility like this. Overall a decent round but much prefer the Greg Norman course of this one.

Great Course.
Course was amazing. Definitely would recommend it. Golf staff and starter were really friendly and helpful. However, we played at 148 with 2 of the slowest players of all time. I think we were 30 minutes behind after 12 holes. Didn’t finish until about 630. Didn’t see anyone in front of us after about the 5th hole. Group behind us hit into us twice. No Marshall to come kick us in the butt. My partner and I began putting out before the slowpokes on the back 9. Beer/food window was closed after 9 and the only option was to buy from a full/crowded bar inside. Beer cart gave us last call on 8th hole but didn’t realize that was going to be the actual last call. Pro shop closed at 6 so we didn’t get to buy any merch after the round.
Will probably play elsewhere before returning next year.

PGA course are fantastic. We found the greens full of divots and running slow.

The only thing about this place is that you’re at sea level and the air seems more dense so you have to club up 2 clubs to get the distances you want. The staff totally knows this and it would have been nice to know instead of 5-6 holes in where you realize you’re not crazy.

Average at best
Course was ok but many others in area are much better and half the price.
Course was just average for a PGA Nicklaus.
Our cart actually quit on 15th hole and waited 10 minutes to get a replacement.
Play Cimarron or Indian Canyons instead!

Great Public Course That The Pros Play On
We played the blue/white combo and it was perfect for mid handicap golfers. The course was in perfect condition. The staff was amazing and very helpful. I would definitely play this course again when I return to the Coachella valley.

Fun challenging course
Course was in very good condition except for bunkers which were short of good sand, unraked, and occasional grass/weed clippings on sand. Greens were excellent.
