The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Was very cold and windy and raining.
Course conditions were very difficult. I’m somewhat surprised by the fact that my husband lost a club while playing that day and that it was not recovered till now. Very surprised..

Just great golf
Amazing staff as usual, we got out early so there was no one in front of us and surprisingly no one pushing us either. We played in 4 hours which was great compared to our 5 hour and 30 min. around the day before.

Great Course
Nicklaus Tournament course is awesome and has some great holes. From 8 to 18 it is real golf and a great challenge.

Amazing track
First time at the tournament course and so far it’s my favorite for pga west. Wouldn’t have finished with our tee time but the starter got us out 30 mins early after a few minutes of sweet talking and a group that was missing their fourth. So they switched with us! Lily pad is just as fun as Alcatraz in my opinion and the course never gets boring. Only downside to the round was my first hop of the day on 18 that hit cart path and went into a back yard the guy was soooooo angry and lied to us saying I hit him in the face . I told him if I really did I’d pay for him to go to hospital and get it checked out but he had no mark where he said my drive hit him so I doubt jt happened. Anyways I’ll be back soon next to try mountain.

Money well spent
This course is slightly pricey, but well worth the money. I had played PGA West Stadium in the past and thought I would try Nicklaus Tournament this time. It turned out to be a good choice. I used the practice facilities for 1.5 hours before playing and they are excellent. The course was in great shape and the pace of play was perfect. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Slow play again!
Honestly, I love this course. I think I have played here more than 10 rounds. But the price just keeps going up dramatically and the pace of play on our 2 rounds within a week was just terrible. The Marshalls do nothing to force slow golfers to speed up. Last week’s round was 5 hours and 15 minutes. This week’s round was 5 hours and 10 minutes. This is unacceptable and the PGA West needs to take accountability. One or two groups of golfers do not have the right to slow down play for everyone else on the course. If Marshalls are earning a salary, then they should do their job.

Great golf course
We enjoyed playing here…everything was great, starting with the friendly and efficient staff who greeted us upon arrival. Challenging and interesting course,in great condition. Pace of play was excellent. It is expensive, but a memorable golf experience.

Slooowww play
The marshals seemed unable to get the group 3 ahead of us to speed up. 5 hour round, barely got in our 18. Groups behind us, who should have easily got in 18, did not. They need a better system for slow and selfish golfers out there. Perhaps a policy/waiver signed at check-in to give the marshals some power out there. Way too much money to spend on a 5 hour round and to not get in 18.
