PGA WEST Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course
About
The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Firm as can be
So Jack Tournament course has been Closed for some time. I’m not sure why the greens are so firm. It was very difficult to get the ball to check up if at all. Was supposed to open Sep. 1st and was late to open Jack I was expecting very nice greens, but it’s ok they were still fun the course is great in any condition. Really love the course the price is right if you can take a little heat. Staff is always the best thanks to all of them!
Nick Tournament
Rode the Blues (6522/72.2/134) in slightly over 4H twilight on a GN Hot Deal. Played with Temeculalowshooter, thanks for the round Daniel! First day since May the high was under 100 out here, 95, low humidity and a slight breeze felt downright comfortable. Air quality improved from a few days ago, no problem today. Decent late summer conditions, a little scruffy around the edges. But a huge step down from prime over seeded pristine playing conditions.
Bermuda tees had decent coverage and were okay to play from.
Bermuda fairways were semi lush but all had some bare areas.
Bermuda primary rough was mowed low but still thick with good coverage.
Plentiful sand traps had decent sand but were not very well maintained. No way all those foot prints were from just today.
Bermuda greens putted medium speed with few ball marks. Very firm and consistent from green to green.
Very good customer service from everyone. Plenty of water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Nice all grass range that was busy today.
Nicklaus Tournament features mounds along the sides of fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways and some expansive sand waste bunkers. Raised greens where irons barely off line or short can be in collection areas where the green is well above the golfer.
Recommended.
Course Closed due Corona virus.
Didn’t get to play due corona virus course closure.
PGA West Tournament Course
I was surprised when I checked in to hear hole 14 was closed due to water issues but the course reduced the greens fees accordingly which absolutely softened the blow. As always the greens were perfect and fairways well manicured. Were it not for the hole closure this is a five star course.
Great Day of Golf but started off a little shaky
We arrived at the course around 10:45, checked in with the pro shop and then went to grab breakfast/brunch at Ernie’s. We were disappointed to find out that we could only order from the lunch menu. The food and service was very good though. One of players had to rent clubs and had a very uncomfortable experience one of the workers. He brought out a set of women’s right handed clubs instead of the men’s left handed that had been ordered and paid for. Reluctantly the worker agreed to bring out the men’s left handed clubs.
One of the carts we used had bad brakes and the starter quickly changed out our cart for one that worked much better. Our only complaint about the course was the lack of sand in some of the bunkers. Sometimes it felt like you were hitting off concrete. Otherwise the course was in great shape and the pace of play was 4 hours.
Mountain oasis
Beautiful layout in nice condition. Challenging but fair. Look forward to playing again soon.
Nice but skie
My recommendation is that you play golf at any of the PGA West horses in the morning. We played nine holes and then it slowed down and wait on every shot and there’s no reason for that there’s people hitting balls in the water and they’re taking forever to get them out and nobody’s really policing it.
iT is resort course. The stadium course is more difficult as far as the par three’s and more challenging.
Excellent course
Nice challenging but fair. Greens rolled true. Course was in excellent condition.
Great course
Nicklaus does a wonderful job laying out the course. Definitely challenging but fair. One of my favorite courses.
Great Nicklaus Course
Watched this course during the AmEx tournament and it looked hard. Played today from the blue tees and it is not as penal as it looks. Very interesting course in great condition. Only stopped 2 times and played in 3.5 hours. Will say it was Super Bowl day, but loved the surroundings and will definitely play again. Just don't short side yourself here- it will be a long day if you do.
Keep it in the green
Challenging course, if you keep the ball in play you’re fine, if not, you will have a tough day. Deep bunkers everywhere, elevated greens Nicklaus style, plenty f water. An enjoyable day if you’re up to a good challenge. In great condition. Being an extra sleeve and take an extra club on approach shots.
PGA west
The tournament course is always fun and difficult to play. The course is always in excellent condition. It is my favorite course in the Coachella Valley.
Nick Tournament
Rode the Blues (6522/72.2/134) in 4H, 25M twilight using Forlinx. Basically play 18 in the dark to finish. Played up with Leiz, Steve and Scott, all snowbirds. The weather was sunny, breezy and in the low 80's.
Nicklaus Tournament features mounds along the side of fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways and some expansive sand waste bunkers. Raised greens where irons barely off line or short can be in collection area where the green is well above the golfer. Barely a week after the PGA Tour was here, I expected immaculate conditions and was not dissapointed.
The over seeded tees were lush and very nice to play from.
The over seeded fairways were lush and excellent to play from.
The Bermuda primary rough is mostly dormant, mowed low but still thick. The rough closer to the fairway is over seeded and very lush.
The plentiful sand traps were very well maintained.
The over seeded greens putted medium fast speed, smooth and firm.
The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Very good customer service from everyone. Plenty of water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that was busy today. Definitely recommended.
Arrogant Marshall
On the short par 5th, my grandson was waiting for the green to clear. Marshall drove up to us and "yelled......what are you doing"? I replied "being respectful".
I asked his name and he said Stan. I said, ok Aussie, hit the ball and if you hit them we'll say Stan said to hit the ball.
He drove the ball about 3' short of the green and it rolled back 6'. The couple with us said "Stan had a little fear in his eyes when he watched the long drive.
ALL other staff were great. Send Stan to PR school or fire him.
