PGA WEST Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course
About
The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

A Matter of Principle.
My experience with the server Mark B at the desk counter in the Pro Shop was less than desirable. He charged $219 to my credit card and I told him I had a GolfNow special promotion rate and to check in the system. He said I made the reservation directly with PGA West, which I did not. My GolfNow confirmation number 322902258 reflected a Special Promotion rate of $179 vrs PGA invoice 632038 rate of $219, a difference of $40. Rather than argue, I simply signed the invoice and walked away feeling a little disappointed with the experience. While it may be only $40, it’s a matter of principle. Notwithstanding, the course conditions were ideal, good pace of place, other staff very friendly and to that, I could only reflect a 3 star overall rating. Who knows, maybe a $40 credit could be extended, I doubt so.
Great, challenging course
The entire Coachella Valley was hit with heavy rains on Feb 14, 2019 but the course drained well and was in great condition. Tee boxes were well maintained. Good distinction between the fairway and rough. Challenging for all levels (I’m a 12 handicap). And greens rolled at about 9-10. Super great staff.
Just great all the way around
They treat you like a king (or queen)
The course is immaculate, challenging and beautiful. A true desert style - what more could you want?!
Jack's Couse
It is very clear that this course is an early Nicklaus design geared to low handicap golfers. For the average to high handicap golfers it is simply too difficult. Every hole ladened with deep sand traps and steep fall out areas around the fairway. Every green is protected by sand traps which forces a high entry shot to greens which will hold the entry shot..Good golfers would love the challenge but average to high handicap participants I would avoid this course..
Amazing Course and Facility
Favourite course i have played , everything about this track was fun, it makes you focus on each shot because if you don’t, you are penalized for it.
Too many moguls
Nice conditions
But jack put too many moguls
& sand traps on this thing
Fair challenge
Prefer Stadium
Worth $120 in winter
Like the starters
Excellent course
Awesome course. The crowned greens are tough and they’re quite small and fast but roll very true. I have no complaints at all from the minute I arrived until I finished. Course is lined by houses but not really in play unless you really spray the ball. Nice views of the mountains.
Wish I could play it every day
It was cart path only no doubt keeping it in good shape for the desert classic. What a great course glad we got to experience it!
Excellent course and experience
Great course, everyone friendly, great condition, fine day of golf
PGA Nicklas
Course is real challenge with generous fairways, deep and large traps with greens that are slippery fast. Lots of fun
Course was in great shape
Fairways and greens in great shape. Course laid out well. Good pace of play
Not for handicapped golfers
The course was beautiful. Unfortunately it looked like a pete dye design. Elevated greens were 8-10 feet of the fairway (most of them) with slopes of 45-60 degrees (steep) everyone had to climb up, even if their ball had hit the green. I had hip surgery 6 weeks ago and I couldn't climb those hills. Every fairway was lined with moguls, some of which were 15 feet high. The one bunker I got into had sand hard packed under 1/4 inch of fluffy sand. I will not return to this course.
Great layout and friendly staff
First time playing this golf course. It was in great shape the fairways were perfect and the greens rolled out great. Fun course to play.
Great course
Played the Stadium course four days ago and thought nothing could come close to the quality. We were wrong. The Nicklaus tract is just as impressive, and maybe a little more forgiving. Not saying either course is easy, but very enjoyable, and in pristine condition as they get ready for the PGA tournament in a few weeks. The courses we played were in excellent condition, and the mountain vistas were beautiful. Call it a “win - win”!!
