The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.

If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.

Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.

It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.

No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.

"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Great Nicklaus Course

Watched this course during the AmEx tournament and it looked hard. Played today from the blue tees and it is not as penal as it looks. Very interesting course in great condition. Only stopped 2 times and played in 3.5 hours. Will say it was Super Bowl day, but loved the surroundings and will definitely play again. Just don't short side yourself here- it will be a long day if you do.

Keep it in the green

Challenging course, if you keep the ball in play you’re fine, if not, you will have a tough day. Deep bunkers everywhere, elevated greens Nicklaus style, plenty f water. An enjoyable day if you’re up to a good challenge. In great condition. Being an extra sleeve and take an extra club on approach shots.

Nick Tournament

Rode the Blues (6522/72.2/134) in 4H, 25M twilight using Forlinx. Basically play 18 in the dark to finish. Played up with Leiz, Steve and Scott, all snowbirds. The weather was sunny, breezy and in the low 80's.

Nicklaus Tournament features mounds along the side of fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways and some expansive sand waste bunkers. Raised greens where irons barely off line or short can be in collection area where the green is well above the golfer. Barely a week after the PGA Tour was here, I expected immaculate conditions and was not dissapointed.

The over seeded tees were lush and very nice to play from.

The over seeded fairways were lush and excellent to play from.

The Bermuda primary rough is mostly dormant, mowed low but still thick. The rough closer to the fairway is over seeded and very lush.

The plentiful sand traps were very well maintained.

The over seeded greens putted medium fast speed, smooth and firm.

The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Very good customer service from everyone. Plenty of water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that was busy today. Definitely recommended.

Arrogant Marshall

On the short par 5th, my grandson was waiting for the green to clear. Marshall drove up to us and "yelled......what are you doing"? I replied "being respectful".

I asked his name and he said Stan. I said, ok Aussie, hit the ball and if you hit them we'll say Stan said to hit the ball.

He drove the ball about 3' short of the green and it rolled back 6'. The couple with us said "Stan had a little fear in his eyes when he watched the long drive.

ALL other staff were great. Send Stan to PR school or fire him.

My favorite round.

We were excited to play this course as the PGA would play here in 3 weeks. We were the first ones out the day after an all day rain, and the course was in excellent condition. A challenging course with small greens. A good short game is needed, and poor drives are forgiven. The staff is world class, as is the pro shop and club house and restaurant. My son in law was not happy with his own driver, and they loaned him a new Taylormade at no cost. If I were to play there again, I would prefer to walk the course, it's that pleasurable.

Birdie at 9

Perhaps it was the 11 hole carry over I won with my kp at #9 following it up with a 6ft putt on a green with a stimp metre reading of pool table, I enjoyed this course more than the Stadium. This course offered up some challenging holes whilst not feeling the need to beak every club in your bag. If you’re a fan of desert golf and like to have your game put to the test make sure to add this course to your bucket list, you will glad you did.

As You Like It

The Nicholas Tournament Course is a great test of golf but but can still be a fun 18 for the higher handicap player. The course has multiple tee boxes so you can play the distance and slope that fits your game. the layout is a good combination of straight forward golf holes and challenging risk reward holes. The price can be a bit daunting but the chance to tee it up where the pros play is worth the expense. If you are heading to the desert, this is a must play.

One of my favourites!

Nicklaus Tournament Course never fails to disappoint me! This is my 4th time playing this course and it gets better every round! Even with the cart path only rule and slower greens, it is still my “must play” while visiting. It is one of the higher priced green fees for visitors but still worth it. Watch for deals!

Nicklaus Tournament

Rode the Blues (6522/72.2/134) in slightly over 4H, 45M early morning using Forelinx. Played up with Jim, Mark and Tom, on a winter golf vacation from Ohio. CPO. Being matched up with nice guys and good golfers made the slow round POP much more bearable. The weather was sunny, breezy and around 95.

The over seeded tees were lush and very nice to play from.

The over seeded fairways were lush and excellent to play from.

The Bermuda primary rough is mostly dormant, mowed low but still thick. The rough closer to the fairway is over seeded and very lush.

The plentiful sand traps were as immaculately maintained as I have ever experienced anywhere. Even all the waste bunkers were freshly raked and seemed to have better sand than 75% of the courses I have played.

The over seeded greens putted medium speed & were firm and somewhat bumpy.

The layout features mounds along the side of fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways and some expansive sand waste bunkers. Nicklaus Tournament is one of the toughest chipping courses I have ever played because of the firm raised greens that are surrounded by steep banks on 2 or more sides on almost every hole. It came out of over seeding in better shape than Stadium.

The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Excellent customer service from everyone. Plenty of water stations on the course. Good GPS on the carts. Nice all grass range that was busy today. Definitely recommended.
