good experience

Had fun again. Only real complaint was someone ahead of my group was seriously dragging his feet around the cups, creating foot-long gouges. Probably some fat guy who should be bowling instead...

Disappointing

The course is decent. Not thrilled prices have gone up in the winter, seems like they should drop prices to attract more golfers. Instead they raise it figuring less golfers due to DLS and winter weather. Also, they collect carts at 4:30pm when there is at least another 30 minutes of day light. It’s ridiculous they can’t pay the cart boy an extra hour to wash up carts which would keep the customers happy. Nobody mentioned this, not on golf now nor even in the pro shop when paying before my round. Had I known, I probably wouldn’t have booked on GN and would have just called the course to book. I would have walked with a pull cart instead. Or the course could bring you a complimentary pull cart when they collect your cart. Especially with only 3 holes to finish. Better communication is needed.

Walked

Fun little track

It's the Naval base course - not long but some challenging holes and none of the greens are easy.

Tight fairways and good bunkers. If you're in the area and can't get on Pacific Grove and want a reasonably priced round, check this one out. Inexpensive for the Peninsula and in great shape.

It's a fun little track that takes some accuracy to score well.

Great price for a course in this area.

Fairways were in great shape. Greens were fast but Also very hard. Overall the course was better than I expected. Will definitely go back. Great price for 18 holes in the Monterey area.

The epitome of greed

This is a relatively short course that has a ho-hum design and unattractive surroundings, including the fairgrounds, airport and RV parks. It has one thing going for it...they keep in in pretty good condition for what it is. They used to have another thing going for it: it was very reasonable to play. You could go on GOLFNOW.com prior to the pandemic and pay 15 bucks plus fee during twilight, but In just 3 years it's gone up to $61. It was around 25 at about noon I believe. Now you are looking at prices in the lower to upper 70 dollar range during the morning through early afternoon. I get prices go up and many things factor into that. But to jack them up that much is just pure greed. This course was one of maybe two courses in the area that catered to the average working joe who couldn't afford rates at the destination courses around here. Why would I play Monterey Pines when I can play Bayonet Black Horse, Del Monte and Poppy Hills at certain times for close to the same price, especially with an NCGA membership or other memberships offered as a local? And they are better and bigger boy courses. Sorry Monterey Pines...you aren't worth over 70 bucks and you've lost myself and many other local golfers I know around here because of your money grab. I don't know what the US Navy's role is in the decision to jack up green fees, but shame on them with all their billions.

Average at best.

My group of golfing buddies gather annually in Monterey for three days of golf. We have played most of the public access courses and this year decided to try Monterey Pines.

For the area, the course is a bargain. We paid $65 which included cart. If price is a driving factor for you, this might be a good choice. The fairways and traps were in exceptional condition. The greens weren’t terrible but for some reason, players here do not fix ball marks. We made a point to fix our marks and 4-5 others on every green. They did roll true and consistent.

The big complaint was external. The course is set in an industrial area and next to the airport. Unlike most courses in the area which have million $ views, the views here are not pleasant. In addition to unsightly views, the noise from various industrial activity and the airport was very distracting and further reduced the enjoyment of the round.

Our thought was that you don’t travel to Monterey for cheap golf. We would rather pay a little more and play one of the moderately priced ($105 - $150) courses of which there is no shortage. Monterey Pines just not deliver the hoped for Monterey Peninsular experience.
