Nice little Course
This is a nice little course with very few par 4s. The pro shop is top notch, The restaurant was under renovation. You have to cross the street in your cart at the light-no tunnel under the road. Has a nice driving range and large putting green.
Decent for the money
They are updating the course. It's in better condition then it used to be.
Great course on the up n' up.
I played this course for the first time around 3 years ago. It was far from excellent, better yet, far from even good. It was a fun course, easy to walk and very laid back. The course maintenance however was dreadful. The greens were a disaster and the fairways even worse, but ever since they have been under new management (around 2 years ago I believe) the course has seen amazing improvements and is really becoming something. In the Orange County area it's near impossible to play a course that offers a good 9 hole experience, until now. Although it has offered 9 hole play since opening, with new management it's seen significant improvement. Yes, you still tee off from the mats, but not every hole. I believe the course now has 8 tee boxes in place and is working on more. Keep in mind it is still a short par 3 course that is far from Pebble Beach, so if you're a frequent at much nicer courses in the area, such as Pelican Hill, Monarch Beach etc...you might get your panties in a bunch playing here, but egos and pretentiousness aside you have to take your hats off to the turn around the course has seen over the past couple of years. They are working avidly to improve all aspects of the course including the dining room and bar and are working diligently to improve/repair the greens which need some TLC. If you're a local you know that on weekends other courses in the area can take up to 6 hours to play a full round! And that's not including the time it takes looking for your ProV1 that the neighbor golfers on the adjacent fairway non challantly scooped up "by accident." It gets exhausting and boring sitting in your cart waiting for 4 somes to tee off and clear the greens. However, even on weekends when there is a good amount of foot and cart traffic on Newport you can easily walk the whole 18 in less than 3 hours. And less than half that if you're looking to play a quick 9. Weekdays, it's even shorter and so hassle free. I often play a quick 9 in the morning before work or will sneak in a quick 9 after. It's fantastic. The guys in the office are kind, warm and friendly. They are always willing to help however they can and just add to the experience of being here. I highly recommend that if you're in the area or just visiting, play Newport Beach. It'll by far be the easiest, and most relaxed time you have on a short, fun course. Get after it!
Work in progress
The new owners and management team have made progress turning this course around. The fairways are greener and the greens are much better. They are in the process of improving the tee boxes, going from mats to natural grass. Hazards are next. It is one of my favorite courses for value, practice and a nice driving range. The great staff makes a difference too. Give them another year and it will be a gem.
Nice practice course
This is a nice practice course, it’s in pretty rough conditions
bottom of the barrel
I live close by this course, have played it maybe 10 times. It's only good if you're drinking a lot of beers, don't mind hitting off of mats, and have very low expectations. The fact it's rated with more than 2 stars is the biggest surprise I've had this week, maybe this month. Truly, this course is a WAY overrated. I'm sure they had a bunch of friends up the rating bc it's the worst/cheapest course I know of in OC
Newport Golf
The course was a good experience in terms of the price, and greens. Golfers new to the course should be given tees for mats---as very difficult to maneuver . The starter was kind enough to give us a tee ----! Also, the course was being renovated so not in the best condition.
Great little course with some par 4's
I love this course for several reaasons: 1. Proximity to my house. 2. Affordability. 3. Great for working on my short game. 4. Gives me 5 holes to use my driver.
The fairways were in good shape and the greens were filled in great after being punched a few weeks ago ( with the exception of #12- it never seems to be completely filled in.) The course is mostly flat and walking is about the same as driving as far as the time to finish the round. The staff is great! The only downside to the course is that the tee boxes are set up on driving range mats and it can be frustrating. Other than that, this is a great course for the money and location!
This course needs a lot of work
My wife and I have seen this course just off the freeway, so we thought of giving it a try. Sunday afternoon tee time of 1 o'clock was great. The tees were synthetic turf (like driving range), the fairways were dry and parched and the greens had just been aerated and sanded. I did not see one marshal but noticed golfers sharing carts (4 bags and 4 guys in one cart) and general golf etiquette ignored. Major construction was near the back nine which made for even poorer conditions. The only plus was the pro shop which seemed to be well stocked with good selection and driving range which seemed to have plenty of boxes with synthetic turf on the whole hitting area. Very disappointed with the course and will probably never go back.
Fun executive course.
Under construction but the improvements are going to be worth it
Great place to practice
I like to head out to the Newport Beach Golf Course during my lunch breaks to either get some practice in on the range/putting green or play a quick 9 holes. With a cart, I can finish the front nine in about 45 minutes to an hour. A lot of the reviews on this site mention greens and fairways in bad condition. Be aware that the course is under new ownership and they are working to improve the overall quality of the course. The greens are in fantastic condition and improve every time I visit the course. Last time I played I was told that the par 4s at least will be switching to grass tee boxes, and I don't see why the other holes wouldn't follow suit next year (just making an assumption there). Even though you have to hit off mats, they are in great condition and you can use a special rubber tee that accepts a short wooden tee. Once you're tee'd up it's pretty close to an actual grass tee box. I also heard some rumors about a new clubhouse in the works. Be patient and support this course so they can continue their improvements.
The little things
At the bare minimum having the rubber tees on EACH hole that allows the golfer to insert their own tee would be at minimum the right thing to do if you want new customers.
Great day
They have some construction going on, but the course is still a lot of fun to play. Excellent cheeseburgers! Part of the construction includes real tee boxes in the future.
Nice Course
Nice Course easy to get around Not in best condition moderately challenging I would recommend
