Fun executive course.
Under construction but the improvements are going to be worth it
Great place to practice
I like to head out to the Newport Beach Golf Course during my lunch breaks to either get some practice in on the range/putting green or play a quick 9 holes. With a cart, I can finish the front nine in about 45 minutes to an hour. A lot of the reviews on this site mention greens and fairways in bad condition. Be aware that the course is under new ownership and they are working to improve the overall quality of the course. The greens are in fantastic condition and improve every time I visit the course. Last time I played I was told that the par 4s at least will be switching to grass tee boxes, and I don't see why the other holes wouldn't follow suit next year (just making an assumption there). Even though you have to hit off mats, they are in great condition and you can use a special rubber tee that accepts a short wooden tee. Once you're tee'd up it's pretty close to an actual grass tee box. I also heard some rumors about a new clubhouse in the works. Be patient and support this course so they can continue their improvements.
The little things
At the bare minimum having the rubber tees on EACH hole that allows the golfer to insert their own tee would be at minimum the right thing to do if you want new customers.
Great day
They have some construction going on, but the course is still a lot of fun to play. Excellent cheeseburgers! Part of the construction includes real tee boxes in the future.
Nice Course
Nice Course easy to get around Not in best condition moderately challenging I would recommend
Roll the dice
Can be a fun place - sometimes. No tee times, No real etiquette to follow if you don't want to. Might run into a six'em of kids from Newport harbor or some college kids having a few beers, or having a joint. Might run into a stack-up of 5 parties on the back nine. You definitely will never run into a Marshall of any kind. Last time I was there I ran into a sewage spill. Preference is not given to golfers transferring from front to back, so be warned. Like a lot of things it depends when you show up, you might get lucky. If you look on the 17th hole, you will see a sand wedge in the branches of the tree. It has been there about 5 months. A party of 5 was hammered and one threw it up there. He came back and asked us if we had seen a sand wedge about 20 minutes later.
When you get stuck behind a slow party or a jam up here, be warned, it can be frustrating. The mats you tee off from are in pretty good condition, but you may need to bring a rubber tee or buy one, as the patrons take the ones left in the mats. So if you enjoy this, you will like this place.
Not worth it
When you read Newport Beach Golf Course you think this is a great price to pay to play in this city. The reality is it is poorly taken care of, construction everywhere, you are crossing major streets in between holes with planes flying over your head. The staff was not overtly friendly or bad but about halfway through I laughed at this ridiculous course. If you could see the beach at some point I would overlook everything else but you are next to a canal, freeway, and apartments. Just not worth it.
A day at the airport
I did start right away and I was playing by myself. The overall condition of the course was not too good. There was a lot of construction going on and the planes going overhead bothered me a lot because they were so loud. I think most of the holes were just short par 3s. The noise level on the course bothered me a lot. The fairways were pretty dry with mostly crab grass which is not my favorite grass to hit on.
Newport Public
I always love Newport! Pro Shop Staff is one of a kind! Newport takes GREAT pride in their greens which is why I love playing here. Beautiful driving range. Expensive compared to most courses of similar rating in the area.

Much improved
Under new ownership this course is much better maintained, fairways and greens are well-kept, and it's an exceptional local value.
Great Course
I play this course with The Back 9 foundation. As a recovering addict I like to play golf and this course along with the Back 9 foundation allow me a healthy outlet for my recovery. The best part is this course allows us to come and practice with the foundation there. A big thank you goes out to these guys from all Windward Way Recovery clients.
