Goat Hill Park
About
Located in Oceanside, Goat Hill Park originally opened in 1952 as a nine-hole course called Center City Golf Course. It was the first golf course in San Diego County and in the 1980s was designated as protected public land that cannot be developed without a public vote. The course was redesigned in the 1990s into an 18-hole short course and soon became known by locals as "Goat Hill." The course was threatened by development in 2014 but the local community fought the plans at city hall and a new management team led by local residents John Ashworth, David Emerick and Geoff Cunningham assumed management of the golf course. Using volunteer corps of tradesman and citizens along with dedicated staff, they renovated and revitalized Goat Hill to its current state. The course features one par 5 on its par-65 layout and features long views from its perch on a hill. It also has a full driving range, pro shop as well as disc golf interwoven into the layout.

Now I know e=why they call it Goat Hill
Because of the recent rain and steep slopes it would have been risky to take a cart. So I opted for a pull cart and walked 18 holes. If you are not fit, I would not recommend that approach. Most of the course is up and down not a lot of grass cover, so extra exertion is required. If you want to carry your bag, get rid of half your clubs and your meatball sub. All in all, an unique experience and I am glad I played.
Goat Hill
Walked the Blacks with 140ver & Greg in overcast, soggy conditions. Par 65 Executive course that is only 4454 yards, but has a difficulty factor surprisingly high for a course of this length.
My 1st time playing here. One of the most unique courses I have ever played, and perhaps the toughest walking course. It is aptly named Goat Hill... you would never believe there is a golf course carved out of a large hill overlooking the 5 freeway. Many tees and greens are terraced right out of the side of the hill. Almost every hole either plays up/down the hill, down/up the hill or around the hill.
The small, humpbacked greens were the highlight of the course. They putted medium speed, were fairly smooth and held approach shots very well after the overnight rains.
The rest of the course conditions were below average to poor. The tees were thin and chewed up. Many of the fairways had large areas of hardpan or very thin turf. The rough was very hit & miss. However, to their credit, it looked like they had recently spread seed that hopefully will take hold if we continue to get rain. The traps were poor, but I'll give them a pass there because of the heavy overnight rains right before we played.
The course routing is all over the place, without a course map you would be hard pressed to find several tees from the last green. No frills course with push carts, but the customer service was great. We were provided a course tip sheet that is a must for anyone not already familiar with the quirky layout.
Difficult to judge the distances and what effect the hills would have on shots until you played here a few times. This is likely a course you would either love or hate, with little in between. Glad I gave it a try, IF it was in good condition I would occasionally play here if I lived in the area. I would leave it up to the individual to try and see if it is their particular cup of tea.
Great Place
Great challenging course, with an Amazing staff, it's rough around the edges but the greens are almost perfect, everyone is having a good time and your not dealing with a stuffy crowd! We drive 30 miles one way once a week! It's that fun!
Nice greens
Yes, some of the greens are a bit 'funky', but rolled very well today. Course is a great value and friendly as any I've ever played.
Great Value, Improved Conditions
I played this course maybe 15 years ago and it was abysmal, however recent renovations have made the greens and fairways much better. Challenging course with many hills, but it is relatively short and conducive to walking if that's your thing. Extremely good value, midday rate of $12 with cart on GolfNow.
Goat Hill Stinks
Worst course I have ever played. Nearly impossible to get to the greens three stories high above you. No sense to course layout. Very dangerous driving near cliffs and roller coaster cart paths. Stay home. Don't bother playing here. Not at all enjoyable.
Potential, but not there yet
This course has potential, but it's not a 4 or 5 star course yet. Once they are able to use recycled water, it will be so much better, but until then, it's gonna struggle to keep the grass it needs to have quality fairways.
I don't know if this is normal, but today, my first time playing, there were a couple dudes with absolutely dreadful course etiquette. Both my wife and I nearly got hit by balls while we were getting ready to tee off. Thankfully we were not hit, but without hearing someone yell "fore" we had no idea it was coming.
The staff was super friendly. The range high quality. The greens superb. I hope that Mr. Ashworth is able to see his vision for this course become a reality.
Just what it implies......goat hill
Fun and challenging.....not looking Long on the scorecard, but plays longer, with all the ups and downs and the wind.....
Greens are nice, and most chipping and fringe areas......but fairways are pretty sparse
Thanks so much for playing at Goat Hill Park, we're glad you liked the the greens and fringe areas. Come back soon!
Great sopt
since all the upgrades this place has improved so much. love it come try it.
Awesome! So glad you loved the new conditions here at Goat Hill Park! Can't wait to see you back for more.
Good Times At The Goat
First time playing at Goat Hill and it was a very good experience. I do not enjoy the "stuffy" nature of some golf courses/clubs and if you feel the same way, Goat Hill is a breath of fresh air. Very laid back vibe (reggae playing at the clubhouse probably helps), grass driving range is a plus and great service from the staff.
Course is somewhat challenging due to the elevation changes and small greens, but still very enjoyable. We were a foursome of average and below average golfers and we we finished in 3 hours on a relatively empty Sunday morning. I will be coming back in the future.

Feel like the price should be a lil less considering you can go play Oceanside municipal a full course for 3.00 more.
I would pay 28.00 on weekend with cart. And 25.00 during the week.
Not a dollar more. Will not return until prices drop.
Thanks for leaving your review with us. We hope to see you again, book online for the best rates.
Good beginner course.
Played solo early Sunday morning. Pace was good but some holes are awkward. To many par 3's for my liking. Course was under renovations and had new sod down. Greens were wet or soaked in some areas. Seems empty in the mornings. Good spot for beginners I think.
Thank you for your feedback you provided on the course, it is important to us. We are still in the midst of making improvement to Goat Hill Park to make this an awesome community hangout! We hope to see you again soon.
A Classic Course Worth a Visit
The Goat has a history that was a sorry Municipal understaffed and poorly kept by the city. Nearly two years ago new management who saw the value in this tricky tight track went to work to bring it back to its original luster. They are mostly on their way there, but not 100%.
Great care for the greens and even during this drought have been able to revive many of the fairways. If you're looking for La Costa like prim and proper you wont find it here, but you will find a collection of challenging executive course holes with elevation changes and interesting angles.
If you have a Junior golfer or like the speed at which you can get around 9 or 18 on an exec. Give the Goat a try. I think the character of the course and attitude of the people who play there will make it feel like your place to play.
Awesome! Thank you for leaving this review great insight for new golfers to the course. Thanks for noticing our improvements and we're happy to hear you enjoyed the style of the course. Come back and see us!
Looking Up at Goat Hill
Definitely a work in progress at this point, but looks like it's coming along, and there's decent turf on the fairways now. The greens were slow, but in good condition. Fun short course!
Correction: my review says conditions were "Poor". That is a mistake, conditions were at least fair to good.
Great! So glad you loved your round at Goat Hill Park! We have been working towards making this the best course possible for the community. We can't wait to see you again!
Goat Hilk
Great course after remodel. Friendly, polite staff. Challenging hills.
Thanks so much for playing the new Goat Hill Park! Can't wait to see you on your next round. Glad you loved the challenge.
Great changes!
Course is actually playable now! Fairways and greens in great condition!
Awesome! Glad you're loving the course. Come back and see us soon!
A most interesting place
Quite a track, but the signs to each tee help avoid confusion. Greens coming back and carts take the hills fairly well! Would play again, just for its uniqueness!
Tom
Awesome Tom! Thanks so much for playing our course. We hope to see you again, glad it was interesting for you!
Much needed improvements almost complete
The course condition is much improved since the last time I was there, last fall. It is obvious they've put a lot of money into it recently and there is still more to do. But, overall was a good experience.
Fairways are good, greens are good and the infamous gopher holes are gone for the most part. There is still work to be completed soon, they say, cart paths in particular. Overall a good bang for your buck and challenging course.
Thanks for leaving your feedback on the new Goat Hill Park, happy to hear you noticed our improvements at the course. We appreciate you coming out to play and we hope to see you again further into the 2016 season - it's going to be a great one!
Fun and Challenging
Goat Hill has had some renovations as of late, and the course layout is quite fun. There are still areas that are barren wasteland, which if you ask me just need to be bulldozed and flattened, which would assist the overall appearance of the course. If you take each hole for what its worth, and don't come out with a "drive every hole" mentality, you'll be rewarded with a round of golf that tests every club in your bag. Goat Hill is a great course to get your swings in, and enjoy a nice walk in the park. Highly suggest walkers only at Goat...you don't need a cart, and it's my belief that John Ashworth's vision for "The Goat" is one of a purist nature. Hoof it bro...
Awesome! Thank you so much for playing at Goat Hill Park and for having fun out here. We are so glad you enjoyed your round and found it relatively challenging. We'll pass the compliment to John himself. Have a great day!
Incredible Bang For Your Buck
The renovations to this course have completely changed everything about this course - thx John Ashworth and co. This is a fun semi-exec course that challenges your short game and your course mgmt. Be warned, if you are thinking of "hoofing it" it is quite the cardio workout... I was absolutely spent by the end of the round, thankfully they have a great variety of local craft beers (as well as PBR and Bud) to ease the soreness... Well worth the not so heavy greens fee.
Awewsome! Glad you loved the new Goat Hill Park, we will extend the compliments to John Ashworth himself and we appreciate you taking notice of it! The beer at the end of your round sounds like a good way to ease the pain, glad you got great value playing here! Hope to see you again real soon, come say hi anytime!
Thank you so much for your review here, we are happy to hear you loved the course and the greens, happy to hear the staff made your experience that much more enjoyable. Sorry to hear there were some golfers out there that did not consider other players on the course. We will keep an eye out. Come back and see us!
