Pacific Grove Golf Links
About
Originally designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the first nince holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.
The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Links. It opened in 1960, and is laid out in true links design over dunesland that approaches the sea.
Over looking the course is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Built in 1855, it is the longest continuously operating lighthouse in California. It is a historical sentinel and picturesque landmark of the golf course.
A scenic tour of the dramatic coastline provides views of Lover's Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond and the natural dunesland at Asilomar. You will be enchanted by the abundance of natural wonders such as the plentiful Pacific Blacktail Deer, seals, sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and gulls.

Potential
This could be a good course with great views if given the chance to shine.
The corse is interesting with great greens, but unfortunately and it's a big but the fairways were in terrible condition. There were large section with no grass cover at all this was the same on all the fairways. My partner and I had good rounds but were dissapointed with the condition of the course.
Excellent Pacific Ocean Course
Often called the "poor man's Pebble Beach" this well known track is as pleasant and enjoyable as one can expect. For at least twenty years, have wanted to play this course but never could get my schedule coordinated. Found the opportunity this past weekend and had a very enjoyable day. Weather was Chamber of Commerce perfect, plenty of sun, slight ocean breeze and about 70 degrees. Joined a threesome of very nice guys and walked the course. A terrific day overall and I hope to return soon - certainly not letting another 20 years go by....
Great course for the money
Wow. The back nine sits right on the ocean. Great value considering just down the street is pebble beach and spyglass And the people playing there with the same senerey paid hundreds more to play fhere
Poor Mans Pebble
I enjoyed the play but would like the back nine to be worked on so the chance of other players hitting on your hole be less dangerous. Had a player ahead of us confronting us for hitting into them when the ball came from another hole. The back nine needs to be safer.
Interesting course
I was up in the area for a few days and wanted to play a round of golf. Based on the reviews I decided to play Pacific Grove. I found the personnal in the pro shop very friendly and accommodating . I was paired with three other golfers of similar skills. The course is an interesting layout, starting with two par threes, then two par fours. As reported, the two nines are completely different.
I was disappointed in the condition of the fairways, as they were dry and hard. The greens were in good condition, and putted true.
Overall, it is a fun layout, and if the fairways ever get more grass, it will be a lot better.
Totally enjoyed our round.
Greens are in decent shape and rolled true. The fairways were very dry, as if it were late summer. I believe that poor water management in the Monterey Bay area is to blame. I also believe that PGGL would be watering more, if the water was available. The weather was amazing, warm with light breezes. Overall, we totally enjoyed our round at the "poor man's Pebble Beach", PGGL.
Affordable and Beautiful !!
Great way to relax enjoy the fantastic game of golf at a reasonable price and see the beautiful scenery and enjoy the weather !!
Back 9 spectacular
Great holiday golf. Spent a great afternoon round the course. Not that easy
Nice easy layout with waves crashing
Great place for a fun round with lots of room and good conditions beautiful ocean views
Great Views, Average Course
This course has great views, especially on the back nine along the Pacific Ocean coast. Even some holes on the front nine have a view of Monterey Bay. The course conditions are average at best with limited cart paths, patchy grass and slow, bumpy greens. I took a riding cart after seeing the push cart rental offerings which were shabby at best. The pace of play at 4 hours for 18 holes was a pleasant surprise, but maybe my group was lucky playing on a Thursday teeing off at mid-morning. Recommend that the course be played at least once for the views.
Reunion with an Old Friend
I played this course almost 40 years ago on a HS golf team. I had fond memories (not of the ice plant1) but of the layout itself. What a joy to return-I found it in fine shape for a popular muni that hosts many rounds. My friend who played in Ireland and Scotland felt PG compared favorably to courses he played several years back-the spectacular ocean setting, the pitch and runs, and the challenging greens brought back fond memories for him-without leaving the States! I hope to return soon-thanks for a great day.
Back nine makes the round.
Back nine has spectacular views of ocean! Greens were in good shape and an overall enjoyable round of golf (walking). Great value for the money and would definitely recommend.
Can I play 11-17 three times.. please?
This course is absolutely a tale of two nines.. The front is very much a public, municipal style course. Very unusual layout with almost no "flow" to it at the beginning. Starts with two par 3s, then two very short (drivable) par 4s, then two par 5s. However, once you reach hole 6 and then continuing through 9, they are nicely placed and feel like you're finally playing some typical, at times challenging, golf. Then there's hole 10, which is a joke of a par 3 at less than 100 yards.
And then you hit hole 11.... I feel like I was transported somewhere else entirely. The Irish coast? Scottish links? Pebble Beach? Something absolutely special. Natural rolling hills make up the fairways, with waves crashing on rocks, sand dunes, and indigenous coastal plant life all around to keep you on your toes.
Hole 12 is a wonderful par 5 with the breaking waves of the Pacific Ocean to your left and a sharp dogleg bordered by sand dunes on your right. Elevated tees, blind shots, tucked away greens... A wonderful stretch of holes lay before you, culminating in the very fun par 3, 17th hole, over water with the waves again crashing on the rocks to your left.
And then you hit hole 18.. uninspired and drab by comparison. A short, straight as an arrow, up hill par 4. Makes for an easy par to finish your round.
My final thought is that I wish they could somehow replace both 10 and 18 with something more in line with the rest of the back 9.. That would make for a truly special experience.
I would go back again but I would ask two things... Can I play the back 9 twice? And if the answer is no, then can I just play 9 holes.. those being the back 9.
Great course set in a beautiful location
This course is a great value for your money. Actually 2 courses in one as you begin the round in a park-like setting that is a pleasure to play. The 10th tee takes you out to the coastline for a links-style experience complete with wind and surf spraying against the rocks. A beautiful day all around!
Great value and beauty
The course is in great shape and offers great beauty throughout.ir is a terrific golf value! Never disappointed.
Great time
My friend and I were teamed with a nice gentleman and we had a great time it was the best course that I've played already and I shot an 86 on this course the ocean made it beautiful and it was picture taking most on the back nine and I would play it again when I come back to California
Short & sweet with incredible views
This is a relatively short (5700 from the blues) course, but as you head towards the water on the back nine, the wind becomes a factor in a big way. Keep your ball out of the ice plant, and you'll be much happier!
Beautiful course
This course is pretty short. It makes up for it with narrow fairways on the front nine. Once you make the turn to the back nine, it is difficult to concentrate on golf. Just beautiful views everywhere. Staff could not be friendlier. A great value for the money. My suggestion is to walk and take in the views.
