The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

Great Course
I've played this course a few times now, and I love it. There are a good amount of elevated holes and tricky dog legs. You would never guess this course is in Salinas. I would suggest riding unless you want a great cardio workout.
The only issue with my last round here was the punched greens. Golf now didn't specify it on the reservation so that was a bummer. Besides the past round, the greens are usually pretty fast and challenging.
Hidden Gem
This course was refreshing to play, certainly would play it better the second time knowing were I want to put myself. But none the less, weather was fantastic(a little windy though)pace of play was great (under 4hrs)and course conditions were excellent...greens truly challenging and fast.Wish it wasn't an 1 1/2 drive for me I might come more often, but still a great course to play when you can make it here. There was no cart girl though so you want to get a couple beers at the ninth.
Beware
Very disappointed, called the pro shop Monday evening to inquire about the course and nothing was mentioned to me regarding the greens as well as the tee boxes had been aerated and sanded. Called the pro shop on Tuesday morning to inquire about hitting range balls and nothing was mentioned to me that the grass at the range was out of service (sanded) you had to hit off the worst practice mat I have ever seen (these were not individual golf mats). Went on Golf Now on Tuesday morning and nothing was shown that the course had been aerated so I booked it on Golf Now. Got to the course in the afternoon and boy was I shocked. You think it would be a courtesy to inform players if the greens and tee offs had been aerated and or sanded. You could not use the practice green either. Needless to say I will never be back. At least Salinas Fairways Golf Course updated Golf Now to inform you that they had aerated the greens.!!
Great track
love this course good layout and the greens in great shape and quite fast.
I would play here again and shall all year long..
Crazy Horse is Crazy Fun
The former Salinas Golf and Country Club has improved under new ownership. Challenging fun layout, with elevation changes is in excellent condition.
Awesome course in great condition!
Absolutely beautiful course and in great condition. Staff are friendly and the club house is fantasic. If you haven't played this course, you HAVE to treat yourself to it.
Great Course
The course is in great condition from tee to green. A great challenge for every golfer regardless of handicap. Great staff and great food as well. Best deal in Salinas hands down
Challenging and well maintained
The course was spectacular. It was very well maintained and the service was impeccable. Tee time was 7am. Right when I got out of my car they had already brought a cart up for me to load up. If you ever have a chance to come play this course. DO IT. Well maintained and properly groomed greens. Only downside for me was hole 9 and 18 share the same green with 2 different pin locations. Not a huge deal but it was the only downside I could find. Separate fairways. But the same green. I still recommend to anyone.
Worthy Test - Local Knowledge Helps
Found this course via GN, otherwise would not have known its existence. From the Bay Area it is a preferable drive as opposed to Monterrey area. Scheduled a clear day on my calendar in order to play back-to-back 18's with a stop for lunch. First round included a father and 7th-grade son who was quite a competent player. They knew the course well and having local knowledge was key. Greens are exceptionally quick given this is still winter play. Nice lunch with friendly staff and the second round was equally enjoyable. A bit slower pace but overall was happy with the day, people met and the facility. Will likely return again in the near future.
friendly course
very friendly staff excellent course, good food,
fairways well kept
Country club condition, great value
Formerly Salinas Country Club, Crazy Horse still maintains Country Club conditions and vibe. Located in a beautiful, pastoral setting (don't let the drive through Salinas deter you), the course features numerous elevation changes and small, hard and fast greens.
The front 9 is consistently up and down and lacks much character. The back 9 is mostly level with a few elevated tees, the 14th and 15th holes standing out with wow factor from the tee and significant strategy and challenge.
The course is only 6100 from the blues with a slope of 130. Enough for an enjoyable round of golf with doglegs limiting long hitters in some cases.
Overall, I thought this would be a one and done but the conditions, pace of play, service and beauty of the place will definitely bring me back.
Solid Course
Crazy Hose is a very nice golf course. The greens are in fantastic shape. Overall the Course is well maintained and the layout is challenging but fair.
They call it Crazy for a reason...
If you're a beginner or a 20 plus hdcp, this course can eat you alive. The course has a very good layout and has its challenges, the greens are small and are very fast; miss that 4 foot put and you can easily be coming back from 8 feet. Make sure you get a good feel for the greens on the practice green before getting on the first green. At least half of the tee boxes are elevated. After the first round you'll realize where you need to place your shots; end up on the wrong side and it will cost strokes. Bunkers have real sand; easy to get out of. Course has great scenery/views of the Salinas Valley, good facilities and has challenges.
Good value
No complaints other than location for me. Course was in good condition and I finished my round in 3 hours. Granted I was solo and walking. One foursome let me play through. Not that challenging to be honest. Pretty short. Would play again for price.
I like the layout, it is harder than it looks.
The course and all the facilities were clean and well kept.
Hidden Gem
Cannot say anything bad about this place been three times and even during our summer drought conditions were excellent.Hats off to the management and maintenance staff. I will be back!
Fantastic Condition in December!
I was pleasantly surprised to find a course in such a good shape in drought stricken Northern Cal.
Fairways and Greens were nice and manicured. This was my first time and will definitely not the last.
Love this course!
MY GO TO COURSE !!
This is one of my favorite courses in the Monterey area and i've played them all, probably because it's ten min. from my house, if you want the smell of salt air and waves crashing head to the coast...none of that here . Beautiful views of the Diablo mts. ...and the course is ALWAYS in GREAT shape greens roll, fairways mowed tight, rough not too rough, give it a try, you'll go back!!
Central Coast Pleasure
Crazy Horse is a 1st Class Golf Course....but what makes this Course special is the Customer Service and the desire of Staff to make your day Golfing a Great Experience. Peter, the Pro Shop Staff Member has been 'EXCEPTIONAL' every time I have played at Crazy Horse. But, that's not all. The Condition of the course, even after heavy rains, is FANTASTIC....no standing water and the Bunkers are in perfect shape....what else can I say, but GO PLAY.
The course an enjoyable challenge
The course has small fast onionulating greens, which protects the course and provides a fun challenge. The suttle changes in elevation between tees and greens made distance control and accuracy a premium.
I look forward to playing the course again.
Over half the holes at Saint Andrews share the same green. Very common on links course, It's nice to see it in the States from time to time.
