Great golf
Interesting collection of easy and difficult holes. Course is in excellent condition.
Greens have a lot of undulation but play well.
Amazing practice area.
Pace was slow but the other 8-10 times I have played Sterling Grove the pace was very good.
Fantastic Course
Yes, it's a bit expensive. Don't let that stop you from playing this gem. The course is incredible. The layout is fun and challenging. Fairways are perfect. Greens are fast and true. Outside of the layout of #9, I've got no complaints about this course. One of my absolute favorites.
great course!!
i understand sterling grove can range from pricey to not so pricey, but if you want championship golf, sterling is the place to go. from clubhouse to practice area to tee boxes-country club caliber. we golfed on a cool, probably frigid by az. standards with some intermittant rain, so that probably played a role in our pace of play which was great! the rain however did NOT seem to alter the conditions. greens ran nice, fast and true. fairways were better than many greens. sterling is a gem and even a diamond if they can keep their prices reasonable, but i get how all that works. i just hope it remains accessible to us for a while
The Greens Are The Main Talking Point
I had never played SG, and a few of my friends told me it was a great layout BUT the greens will leave you talking to yourself. I can now say that they were right on. The design and flow of the holes are really good. A flat piece of farmland has been transformed into a rolling landscape. No two holes are really the same. The created hills, mounding and bunkering gives you an "unflat" feel. Now with the greens they got carried away. The massive false fronts and sides like on #2, the uphill putts that can be 8 feet straight up on #7 and the cleavage green on the back nine are just too severe for normal. The two guys I played with were decent golfers, but I got tired of watching them 3 and 4 putt, or do the putt off the green trick. I think if owners reconsider a few of these circus greens, they will benefit from it. This facility has 2200 homesites and will have 450 members soon, so the days of the public playing it will soon be over, I say give it a try before it's gone, but know that the putting will be the main talking point.
OK
Was excited to play this course after all the hype I have heard around it, but after finishing the round I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. The fairways on the front 9 were in great shape but the grass on back 9 was really thin in a lot of places. I enjoyed the layout of the course but I can’t stand the greens. First problem was that the greens were absolutely scalped and the recent rainfall did little to slow them down. All my putts ran forever. Usually, that’s not really a big deal but the pin positions made normally easy pars and birdies next to impossible. The hills and elevation changes are very dramatic. Too much so IMO. Pin position #4 is ridiculous. It reminded me of a miniature golf course with the majority of cups situated at the extreme peak of a steep hill. I am always up for a challenge but this was a little over the top. Any put with correct speed but slightly off line would roll off the back side 15’ or more downhill. This made for a very frustrating and annoying round. One of the guys in my group that plays a TON kept calling it “goofy golf”. I have never even seen pin positions like this even on the PGA tour. There is nothing more annoying than gettin up in regulation and blowing up your score because of a ridiculous hole location. Not sure how I feel about this course.
Sterling Grove
First time playing and will definitely go back. Not one negative word to say about course or staff.
Good Shots Coming
Great day of golf. Bring your A game around the greens with some feel. 👍🏼 Very difficult course from the tips today. It definitely can extend further out. Thank You
To many bare spots
Fairways are in rough shape, looks patchy and bare in many spots. Many Bunkers are hard packed and club bounces off the dirt below the sand. Greens are rough so hard to get a true roll. No after golf amenities, no food service at the turn. For the price your better off at one of the muni courses in the area.
Disappointing Condition of Course
Disappointing. is an understatement, from tee to green the overseeding appears to be mismanaged or the course has gone in to under funding maintenance.
I have played Muni courses in better condition. Most Tee boxes are in poor condition, fairways are close to bare in many spots, bunkers need maintenance, and what is amazing I just used a men's room on course the same one I used back in the summer and they still to repair the urinal that has no water operating to it.
For a Nicklaus course it is a shame the condition that the course has degraded to and with the many course in the area save your money and go elsewhere.
Great course! Can’t wait to play again.
Great experience on my first time playing here. I just moved here from the Orange County Ca area and looking to join a CC. This is definitely my top choice. I really loved this course and cannot wait to play again. Green fees were priced fair for non-members and have nothing negative to say.
Nice track
Nice course, a little in the dried out side for the rate they charge but will return to play again
I know overseeding has been complete for several weeks. I did not realize this was cart path only when I booked this round. Also, was not informed that the driving range was closed at this time. And, to get to the clubhouse for a cocktail before the round was not a convenience as construction was going on all around. With all this, I did not want to play there. Thankful it was a beautiful day!!!!!!!!!!
Not impressed with amenities or staff communication
Great location, but did have any amenities for food or drinks. Limited staff on site and literally no communication at all. Lunch facility on the turn was closed at 200pm on a prime Saturday in November. Not a well managed experience at all and was very disappointed for the price to play.
Very beautiful course
Price was 150$. Beautiful course, staff was friendly, range was great, no wait time on a Sunday morning was great, overall great experience. I will be back
Rough Greens
I know the course is only one week out of overseed so can’t expect it to be in excellent condition… However while fairways and tee boxes were very good, the greens are terrible…. They are very rough and impossible to keep a ball on line. Course probably shouldn’t have opened until greens filled in better.
We used a Troon card 2 for 1 today so only cost $85 for two of us… But without that deal, wait a couple of more weeks until greens get better ..
Beautiful track
Greens were still filling in so a few weeks away from being in great condition. Nice course, offers challenges to all levels, beautiful facility and nice staff.
