Rating 71.8

Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort offers 27 holes of golf that are interlaced with the stands of majestic live oaks that form ribbons across the landscape. The holes are divided into three nines that are played in different 18-hole combinations. Named after the densely forested landscape, the Tall Pines/Great Oaks combination will test your accuracy. In addition to the trees, sparkling blue lagoons are situated throughout the course and they provide more than just scenic respite. Golfers should be prepared for some tricky forced carries. There are some challenging holes at Sea Palms but overall, its playability is what makes it popular amongst all skill levels. There is also a practice area with a driving range and chipping and putting greens.

Overpriced

For the price you might as well play King & Prince. Remodel was nice and can see they spent some money but still not a course that is top tier. They sprayed the greens with paint pigment first thing in the morning so shoes have green stain on them. Loaded the tee times to where we had to wait close to 30 minutes to start the turn. Driving range is still an absolute joke and they don’t even give you a token for balls to hit so add that to total play cost. Overall disappointed with course even after the renovation. I would have to be out of options to play sea palms again.

Sea Palms vs. King and Prince

There are two main golf courses at St. Simons for the public to play: Sea Palms (SP) vs. King and Prince (KP). Below I compare and contract the two.

Cart: SP has a more comfortable cart by far. It includes a map of the hole locations. KP has a ball and club washer on the cart, but mine was muddy water. I doesn't seem like they changed the water. SP offers a towel in their card; KP does not.

Practice Range: For the price of these courses, they should give you free range balls. They don't. KP has a better facility which is near the clubhouse with a putting green, chipping green. The grass to hit range balls was below and doesn't replicate a lie in the fairway. SP range is a bit far away. The putting green is near the clubhouse.

Tee Boxes: about the same for both courses

Fairways: about the same for both courses

Greens: Soft. Very soft. Very slow.

Signage: Neither course has maps of the holes on the scorecard or tee boxes.

Slope/Yardage: KP had a very nice combo of tees to choose from so that we could get the yardage and slope that we are used to. I would recommend that SP adjust their scorecard similarly. The yardage from the tips was a bit too far, but from the next one in, it was a bit low. I nice combination of these two would have been perfect.

Value: Paid $65 for SP and $80 at KP.

Course: KP had some lovely signature holes created within the marsh. SP was a great course as well. KP is located all the way on the north side of the island; SP is seems like it is right in the middle of town.

My recommendations: It would be really hard to walk KP due to the "marsh" holes. But I could easily see walking SP if wanted to. For the money, the amenities and the proximity of course to where we were staying (East Beach), I would choose SP over KP.

Tight layout, very good condition.

Front nine holes ease you into a tough back nine. Course is tight with out of bounds on most holes. Greens are challenging.

Terrible customer service

The course was great, but the customer service from the Head Pro could not have been worse. We booked a foursome on line and got a $49 rate, and as it turned out, were the last group off that day. We had one other friend decide to join us, so we first asked if we could play a 5 some and were told no, the course was too busy??? Then the Pro said that our $49 rate was for internet only, so our other friend had to pay $65. So we split up and played a 2some and 3 some. But after 3 holes we caught 2 incredibly slow groups. We then started playing a 5 some, and still waited on every shot. Plus, never saw anyone behind us.

But it gets worse. I left my range finder in the golfcart. I called the next day and aforementioned Pro said they had not seen it but would call if it showed up. Since I was playing in a tourney at another course, my wife went over to the course and asked the cart guy, and sure enough, he found it still attached to the cart. I hope he didn't get fired, because she said the Pro was still giving excuses as to how he looked and they had not found it. I know everyone has a bad day, but when you are in these business, you need to treat your customers as if they are paying your check---because they are! Although we love the course, will probably find somewhere else to play next time where we are made to feel more welcome.

Average Course for Premium course price

Traveled in from out of town to play my first East Coast Course near the beach. Expectations were to see beautifully manicured fairways and greens. I found a very normal course for the price comparable to places I play in Augusta, GA for half the cost. It’s not a bad course at all, it’s just didn’t meet the expectations of the drive and the cost.
