About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks Review
Cart paths are horrible. Greens need repair.
Extremely wet sections on fairways.

Family outing
We had a very good day and I enjoy the course.
Greens were in good shape however the rough was long over due for a mowing. Also, they have a gopher issue on the 8th green.

I have played here many times but not usually on the weekends. week ends they do not have any discounts for seniors or any discounts at all. I think there should always be discounts for seniors

Almost great
The course layout is pretty good. Lots of doglegs. The main issue I had were the condition of the greens. There were many spots on the greens that did not have grass. The greens rolled well but the un-repaired ball-marks and the issue with the spots on the greens made me lower my score. If they address these issues, 5 star review in the future.

Beautiful weather and friendly staff made the golfing more enjoyable again.
Thanks to the considerate staff we were allowed to start early. I respect the staff insistence on playing at my appointed time but sometimes it would be better to let the players start a little early when there are absolutely no players within 15-20 minutes before and after the designated time. Some course staff just insist on keeping the appointed time regardless of the situation and then jam packing the players. That kind of practice is very inefficient and unproductive.
I’m glad that the Castle Oaks golf course management allows the pro shop staff the flexibility to make the adjustments of the starting time for the players. It’s a little thing like that which brings back the players to course.
Fairways and tee boxes were clean and the greens were fast and honest. Sand bunkers had good amount of sand. The scenery is outstanding, perfectly planted trees above each tee boxes. It appears that the Castle Oaks golf has made 1000% improvements since I played there some five years ago. Thanks to your efforts.
The only bad thing is the Water hazards, ponds and waterways, stinking terribly due unclean stale water and duck discharges. They need to be cleaned and put in some chemicals.
For now we plan to play at the Castle Oaks at least once a week until the summer weather becomes unbearable for us.

Still a treat
I have had occasion to play here very occasionally over the years, and it is always a pleasant surprise. Outstanding folks in the pro shop, the course is holding up despite the summer heat, and the greens were rolling true.
No cart girl in evidence - but it was a Monday, and a couple of groups who were glacial in their progress. Otherwise a great deal and an enjoyable round.

Nice Course
By playing mid day on a weekday it wasn’t really that many people so the pace of the course is pretty good. The course layout is pretty nice being that you need to be able to draw and fade to get the best angle on a few holes that goes off to a 90°. I would play again here, and I would recommend it to all my friends. Only con was that most of the ball clears were dry.

Really fun course
Plenty of fun holes here, including more than one that play right into my fade. I couldn’t see the landing area more than once on my approach, but that makes it interesting sometimes.

Golf Now and Castle Oaks not on the same page.
So frustrating. I booked this tee time through Golf Now for 3. Was charged 28 dollars for booking fee then got charged the full green fee at the course. I will just call the course next time to book.

The layout and condition of the course was great. The driving range has grass to hit off. The putting green was crowded, which I assume was due to a Men's Club event that was being held the day we were there. We played early (7:57 AM on a Monday) to get off the course early as the weather was forecast to hit 100 degrees. We didn't get the round in as fast as we could have, but I blame the Men's Club event for that, too. We would have liked to have had breakfast there, but according to their website, the restaurant doesn't open until 9:00 AM and is closed on Tuesdays. So, keep that in mind when making your plans.
