About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

First time
This was my first time play Castle Oaks Golf Club and
It was a treat! The course was in great shape. Greens were in tip top Shape. They weren't the fastest but can tell they will be in 3 weeks time. The course is very open off the tee box which I really liked. You don't have houses crowing the fairway and sitting behind greens worried about taking out a window. The course amenities are awesome as well. Fast pace. And a snack bar with food and drinks ready to go in a jiffy! I can't wait to go back.

Fun course
Pace was slowish but not unbearable. Had a fun time but overall conditions were just Okay. Rocks in sand traps, rough was hard to distinguish from fringe and the mowed grass clippings were all over the fairways. Had them eat my ball a couple times and made it really hard to find them. Worth $70 though? No. Not in any world is it worth that much. That being said staff were super friendly, Megan and Hailey were great. Suggest going during the cheaper rate hours to actually get your moneys worth

Been a while since Covid, playing this course
The weather was perfect and the course remains with awesome scenery. Friendly staff and nice neighborhood. Grass needs to be trimmed a little around fairways, lost 3 balls could not see with tall grasses. Overall still one of my favorite courses. Why is the outside bathroom gets locked at 5pm?

Spring Maintenance Conditions
My group plays Castle Oaks monthly, and will continue to do so; however, conditions were a bit rough. The greens had been punched a couple weeks earlier and sand still remained on the greens. The front 9 needed mowing. We were hunting for balls on all but the par 3's. Grounds crews were actively mowing the back 9, and it played much better. Tee box's were disappointing and had a lot of bare spots. I'm sure that since Spring conditions have arrived, Grounds crews and Mother Nature will do there thing and conditions will be excellent soon.

Way over priced for the conditions
They just aerated the greens. The course was way overgrown. The greens were in horrible conditions and they still charged $55 to play around. When they do these kind of things, they should lower the price by a lot. Every putt roll differently.

Don’t play here
Greens are awful virtually unplayable every one of them is covered with sand and aerated. Fairways still pretty wet.

Winter
Greens were great. Fairways need cut but that is solely due to winter and wetness. Lack of knowledge and how to play the dog legs was a disadvantage. Would play it again.

Staff was great
Even with the frost delay , we got out and played our round with no issues . The pace of play was the best I’ve had in a long time. Bar was great for drinks and food after . However, the kitchen was a little slow. Overall it was a great day.
