About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

The course was in great late summer shape. Greens rolled well, but were pretty slow. Only complaint is on a hot day, no on course cold water and no beverage cart.

Fair and fun!
This is one of my favorites. Interesting holes, well maintained and not overly challenging. Staff always nice.

Overall Good Value - Worth It
Just got home from my morning round. Played the Blacks, shot a 77. I walked and only had to pay $42 vs. $65 if you use a cart. Couple decent hills to contend with if you’re walking, but overall a good course to walk. Greens rolled really well. I’d give the maintenance of the course a 7/10. Fairways and tee boxes a little fluffy in some areas and bunkers were nearly pretty wet (I avoided them thank God). Creativity of the course was a 7/10 from the tips, definitely some interesting tee shots. The scenery was nice, and coming up one of the holes you see the historical castle in the distance which was pretty cool. Definitely worth giving this course a try. I’d say it’s a 1-2 times a year type of course. Worth going, but not going to entice you to come back often. Good luck!

Fun place to play, but...
It is very obvious that the management is working hard to fix the problems with this course The green were is very good condition , the ball rolled true, the approach shots were able to bite and sit but they were a bit slow.
The tee boxes were pretty chewed up. Frequently finding a level spot to stand was challenging. It is clear they have had major water flooding problems recently. There was a fair amount of ground under repair and soft soggy spots in the fairways and just off the greens. The sand was very moist and compacted. I'm hopeful when they get the water problem fixed it will all return to normal.

Due to recent issues with their water system, the course is slowly regaining it’s usual great appeal.

Course is in great shape - challenging but fair
I really like this course. Lots of challenging holes but very fair. Greens are true. Pace of play is excellent especially after noon. Good flat driving range allows for calibrating how well you're hitting that day. Great bar/restaurant for 19th hole.
