About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Breaking 90
My only knock is that sometimes the older local players have reservations about letting me play through
Overall the course played well. Something needs to be done with the sand traps, too many small rocks, it is more like dirt then sand.

Firm & Fast
The course is in great shape. The greens are like a pool table. Rough will punish you as it’s supposed to. The only negative is there isn’t a grain of sand in the bunkers. They’re dirt with a hard clay bottom. I know stay out of them. The course plays through houses and isn’t that long so it’s protected by bunkers. Fairway and green side bunkers are atrocious.

Great Course
Challenging course. A little hilly with s9me very interesting holes. The greens were wonderful, but the rough was a little long. The differences between the front nine and back nine makes it seem like they were designed by two different people. BTW, no mats on the driving range.

Great shape, hard greens
Great spring course. Greens are very firm.
The only knock one this course is the bunkers.
They are basically clay hardpan with no sand.

Bad management
Slow play no Marshall complained no help let two five somee set pace of play wouldn't let. Anyone pass I don't recommend this course any questions call me
Conditions
The course conditions weren’t as good as normal. It’s as if they got to finally mow the rough after months of bad weather...... however the weather has been great. The ponds are all filled with algae

Great Conditions
Excellent greens and fairways. Somewhat difficult rough (which it should be) for those of us playing it. Pace of play was a bit slow, which seems to be the case every time we play Castle Oaks.

Bad
Long grass in fairways, first cut is like a hazzard. No sand in traps. Dry cut grass all over, lost balls because grass is too high. Just bad maintenance. Play LaContenta it is maintained..
