Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Need to cut the rough
Played on Easter, felt like I was on an Easter egg hunt all day trying to find our balls. We lost a lot of balls that were not that far off the fairway that should have been findable easily. Rough right now is very thick and very long, hard to find your ball even just a yard off the fairway or green unless you know exactly where it was.
The course layout is great, big oak trees in play in lot of holes make you think about where you have to hit it. I know the rough is only due to all the rain this year, but it was almost unplayable with thick terrible lies even just a foot off the fairway or just off the greens. I intend to come back in a month or so and think they will have mowed it shorter by then and I’ll re-review it. The greens were in excellent condition and rolling well. Bunkers were not sand, more rocks and clayish, not sure if that’s on purpose I.e. “natural bunkers” or not, but it was hard to get it close out of them.
Pay the greens keeping staff overtime and cut that rough down these next few weeks and it’s an excellent course.
Grass Clumps
Fairways were in good shape but the rough was covered with thousands of clumps of grass. Spent excessive time trying to find my partner's ball.
Thank you so much for your review. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back soon.
Great course
Course is in great shape based on the weather we have had. Always look forward playing this course.
Thank you for leaving us a 5 star review. We put customer experience and satisfaction as our priority, and your review reaffirms the hard work we put in every day. Looking forward to seeing you again.
Rough roughs
Love the course. Greens and fairways were good. Rough is very thick.
Thank you for your 4 star review. We all work hard to provide our guests the best golfing experience possible and feedback like this means a great deal. We look forward to seeing you again.
Disappointed based on past reviews!
Full disclosure before playing the course my expectations were high based on prior reviews and overall rating. I hate when my experience/review is so polar opposite but I have to be honest and fair to those considering where to lay based on GA Reviews.
Was a nice reception when I arrived in the Pro Shop.
I did later hear the F-Bomb from behind the counter which I found a bit surprising.
The Range was foreshadowing for the course conditions.
Finding a decent lie on the range was not possible, weeds and dirt.
Tee boxes and fairways were OK at best. Clippings from previous cuts in clumps all over the course.
Rough was ridiculous, long and unkept. Patches of clover at points 6+"inches tall.
Greens were acceptable hard but the ball rolled true.
From a Top rating in 2015 either people or budgets have changed.
Tragic because it could be a beautiful Brad Benz experience. The layout is excellent highlighted by a split fairway on 18 with an Island option shortcut.
IMO there was no signs of care for this course.
The grounds were dry and solid with a couple exceptions so no reason that the maintenance team hadn't cut the roughs.
Tee time was 12:16 Monday.
5 1/2 hour rond.
Thank you for your review.
we have had an extraordinarily wet winter in NorCal and have been unable to mow roughs as per our normal schedule. Once the rains ease up they will be back to the normal 1" cut.
Castle Oaks needs a little TLC
Overall course layout is great, very challenging. Maybe it’s too early in the season but the rough was brutal, assuming you could find you ball. Major reason why pace of play was slow. The bunkers are a joke with very little sand but a lot of rocks. Hopefully the maintenance improves as the weather gets better.
Thank you for your review.
We have had a very wet winter and the rough can not be mowed as much as we normally do. It will be back to normal once we get a break from the weather.
Great day out of the snow!
We made the trip down from Lake Tahoe to see some green instead of 6 feet of snow...we weren't disappointed! For having many inches of rain the past few weeks, the course was in really great shape. Cart paths only was easily justified. The staff, the price and the entire experience was better than expected. We will be back soon!
Thank you for the 5 star review and for sharing your experience at Castle Oaks. We strive to provide our guests a great golf experience and value. We look forward to seeing you again!
We owned the course!
Considering how much rain we have had lately, the course was in excellent shape. The greens rolled true and pure, not soggy at all, actually firm! Great day of golf with my son, we practically on the golf course. Hardly anybody there today.
Thank you so much for your review!
Awesome Greens
Course in good shape considering the time of year and amount of rain recently. Greens are in awesome shape, fast and true.
Thank you so much for your review!
Thank you for the 4 star review and feedback. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again soon!

Awesome Greens
Course was a little wet (as expected) from the rain & a slight frost delay this morning. Greens are still in incredible shape, what a job they do taking care of them-totally worth the trip out here!
Thank you Paul for the 4 star review and feedback. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Go Elsewhere
Arrived early, driving range closed, snack bar closed, but the Best was at the entrance of the club house a pair of woman’s panties were laying there! Made a comment however it went in one ear out the other with the starter.
No organization as to teeing off, a free for all! Be nice to get my money back!
Thank you for your review.

Extremely slow play
Castle Oaks has always prided themselves on play under 4 hours and 20 minutes. We were 2 hours and forty five minutes into our round. On hole #2 (started on 10), with a back up of two groups so we gave up. The pro shop blamed the slow play on an earlier tournament. Fine, but could they let us know beforehand so we could plan on playing elsewhere? Really unacceptable. We drove over an hour for a quick round. Not going back.

Thanks for your great review!
Thank you for playing here we appreciate it!
Pure Greens
Course was in excellent condition and the greens were "pure".
Thank you for your great review!
Thank you for the review and comments. We use your feedback to help improve the experience that we deliver our guests. You are correct that the additional rain has increased the rough, but we are heading into great weather conditions which enables the rough to be cut more often. Hope to see you again soon!
