Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Great course, needs mowing
Played the white tees, and found it plenty difficult, especially since if you landed anywhere off the fairways, you almost could not find your ball. Probably 5 or 6 inch grass everywhere, made it so that you had to stand directly over the ball to see it. Tough to hit out of too. Some mushy areas on the fairways, but relatively dry, considering all the recent rains. Greens were good. Very fast, and in good shape.
Have a hit straight
Greens are clear and fast. The grass outside the fairways are a real challenge. Fun course a wide variety of hole types. Was disappointed the snack shack closed thus no dogs or snacks., should warn people to bring you own food. Very nice restaurant but tried to get dog and sandwich, “no sir we are serving brunch.”
Was a favorite but NOT this time.
I've been a big fan of this course for years. Big trees, interesting layouts and usually very nice greens. Nice people and nice restaurant. However, the course maintenance was poor enough today that I feel compelled to call them out on it. The weather has been perfect for many days so "it's been wet" is not an excuse. The rough was very overgrown and anything near a fairway was "second cut" and very long - made for finding normal shots very difficult. Greens ROCK HARD- I mean hit and hear the first and second bounce hard. Play agonizingly slow - THAT is why every course - especially on a weekend needs a marshal with a polite backbone. We quit after 13 holes because it just wasn't worth it any more. Castle Oaks - get marshals out there. Cut the rough and take care of the greens before the reputation is done serious harm. (sand was bad too but that's understandable after lon rainy season).
After a rainy week
It would have been perfect day, not too many people playing, weather is not too hot but the sun is out, the only downside, the grass on some parts of the courses are soaking after a week of rainy days. It was muddy on some part but other than that this course is a very nice course to play golf. I will come back again when it did not rain that week.
Beware of rocks in sand
A nice layout but has deteriorated over the years due to lack of maintenance. Most notable was the poor quality of the sand they put in their bunkers. The sand is loaded with rocks and put a big gouge in my Vokey wedge. Overall a B course that would be an A with proper maintenance.
Typical Sunday Golf Pace
No complaints about the weather as it was in the low 70’s! When the weather is like this on a Sunday expect very slow play due to all the bookings and the non golfers wanting a try at this difficult sport. Boy did we have those husbands/wives
out there enjoying the sunshine! I suggest they spend more time on the practice range before going. As for the course the greens were fast and dry? Waiting for the rain to water them??? Hint: stay away from Sunday golf unless you don’t mind playing/waiting for 5+ hours!
Really like this place
Between the friendly staff and great course to play, I would happily recommend this course to all of my golfing buddies.
Great course
Love the course and the staff is always friendly. Only problem is the snack shack is closed and since they don’t allow outside beverages we only had water which isn’t a big deal but a nice cold Gatorade would have been even better. Asked the club house and they let us know since it wasn’t too busy they were not open. Came the next day and they were open was nice but had no hotdogs for the turn!
Ghost town
We had a great day playing on Saturday. It rained some the previous night so everyone stayed home. Course was empty, in good shape and a fun layout.
Awesome Course
This is my favorite course. It is 45 miles from my house but worth the drive twice a month.will continue to play this course.... But You have to slow down & enjoy the views.
Locals prefered
I play here about 6 times per year! Love the layout! Greens and fairways are usually well kept for a public course, but the sand traps are truly BAD! They are very poorly maintained, if at all!
Also the pace of play is not very well managed, especially if the slow group are good ole boys from the community! Yesterday, we had a slow group ahead of us and the ranger watched, but did nothing... we finally had all we could take, and went around them on 13. We had already been 4 hours at that time. They were only getting slower and were never going to let us, a foursome, around. Results... we played only 17 holes and that took 5 hours and 15 min. I'll admit, I have also played as a foursome at Castle in 3.5 hours, but it should be played in 4 to 4:15 if play is regulated.
That said, I will play there in spite of the favored locals and occasional slow play! Great track and lots of fun...
Nice design
There is nothing typical about this course. With the up and over and round hazards, this course challenges you to set up your second shot. This, along with the well taken care of greens gives it a great feel. I used to not appreciate these in well designed courses , but as I hone in my skills the challenge is accepted . Only one small minus and it’s due to the fall season, the leaves in couple of areas make it hard to find your ball . Overall very satisfied
Nice course, staff are not so nice to golfers who bought a hot deal
I like the course, but whenever I happen to play there via a hot deal, the staff doesn’t treat you so well.
Thank you for your response. Please note that we did not asked to start immediately when we checked in. That must have been an assumption by your staff. We only politely asked if we could start a little early if possible and were only hoping to start around 12-12:10 if the course clears, so that we have a chance of finishing before it got dark. That was it. We had no expections, but were told that we didn’t pay much for the hot deals and that there were other players ahead of us that paid full price, which was upsetting because we did not ask or request to go ahead of anyone. Ultimately, we were allowed to tee off at 12pm, which was appreciated, but we were still left with a bad feeling based on the earlier comments. We are hoping it was just a misunderstanding as the course is a nice, somewhat local course that we would like to play again in the future.
Thank you for your response. However, we did not ask to start immediately when we checked in. We only asked politely if we could start a little early if possible and were only hoping to start around 12/12:10 (instead of 12:24) if the course clears so that we have a chance of finishing before it got dark. We had no expections, but were told that we didn’t pay much for booking the hot deal and that there were other players ahead of us who paid full price, which was upsetting because we weren’t asking nor expecting to go ahead of anyone. Thank you for your comments about the course and we appreciate you playing here.
If you look through the 4% negative comments then you will see one common thread.
Hot Deal players who show up up to 3 hours early and expect to be put out on the tee. This particular group were checked in at 11:01 and asked if they could go right now. We had a busy day with a modified shotgun making the turn to the first tee and they were told sorry but we have others in front of you. Once we had got through our reservations this group teed off at 12:00 - a half hour early. We were happy to tee them off early but we could not tee them off when they requested. The rate is reduced by 56% for the 12:24 time slot and players are asked to not to abuse the discount time by asking to tee off earlier than is reasonable. If we can accommodate requests from our players then we will, if we cannot then they will have to wait until their reserved time. I apologize if you feel that this policy is unfair but that is the only way that we can offer such a large discount.
Just shy of excellent
I've played this course several times, and realy like it. As always, greens and fairways in great shape. Bunkers--some are clay-ey, some are good. Love the course layout, some moderately challenging holes, some wide-open, swing-for-the-fences holes. Fun. One problem: Round took 4.5 hours, could have been less than 4, easy. A very slow two-some was two groups ahead, taking their time, had at least a full hole if not two in front of them. Marshal drove by us, never checked in, and clearly never put the cattle prod into the slow group. Like I said, with just a bit of marshaling, would have been a GREAT day! Staff I interacted with fine...but if the marshals don't do their job--that's fundamentally not friendly. I don't care about smiles and jokes, just do your job! BTW, not unique to Castle Oaks...marshaling just isn't what it used to be!
Great Track!
Terrific course and good condition. My only criticism is the bunkers are pretty thin.
Beautiful course
Castle Oaks is really nice course. the entire course was in great shape. This was my first time playing there but will definitely play again. Making it even nicer was the $12 golfnow deal I got. Normal rate was high $30' s to low $40's. Can't wait to play it again.
Thanks for being a long time player.
The week before we were closed due to flooding and 4" of rain - check out our facebook/castleoaksgolfclub page for a video of our rained out Public Links Qualifier.
This week it was high 70 degree weather and the rough exploded.
It's not normally this long as we cut it to 1 1/2".
The hot weather also firmed up the greens.
