Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Challenging but fun
I have played here several times, greens were a little disappointing. Old divots that no one repaired. Greens rough. Bunkers mostly clay with very little sand and very hard. I still enjoyed the day, and would come back. I hope they fux above problems.
Great course, pace of play atrociously slow
Usually have a great time playing this course. It was in good shape yesterday, greens were excellent. However, pace of play ruined the day. Was supposed to tee off at 12:44, didn't get off till 1. Hitting as soon as landing area clear, and still didn't finish up 18 until 5:56pm. 3 groups stacked up at every tee box. Not cool.

Solid golf course
Great day every time i play here. Worth the drive if your not close by. No one hole is the same. Corky, tough course, but fair.
Greens were slow this time. Wasnt used to seeing that from here. Doesn't get a hole lot of play almost like it's private. Fast rounds, really nice finishing holes there.
Thank you for your comments and great review.
Thanks for playing here and leaving a review.
We appreciate your feedback and 4 star rating. We hope to see you again soon.
What water?
I heard about Castle Oaks GC years ago, so I decided to give it a try with a Buddy. The weather was supposed to top out at 91 degrees, so we got a 9 am tee time and it was already 77. We were stuck behind two foursomes that ran slow, so it killed our pace of play. I did not see any Marshals.
The golf shop staff were friendly and helpful. The facility was clean and neat (but a little cluttered). The carts do not have GPS so bring your own. The tee boxes could use some attention, perhaps maintenance is done on Mondays?
The course was fun to play, with many wide fairways and plenty of course undulation to cause some ball roll. If you do go wide right/left and OB, many areas have thorny-bushes so just forget about it.
Many of the greens appeared to need maintenance. Not sure when they roll them, but clean-up is in order. They appeared to run true, not a lot of surprises.
Several holes, including #18 have water. From the tee boxes, you may not see how far the water extends, so you may want to take the cart out to get a visual before teeing off.
Overall, I found castle Oaks GC a fun course and will return.

Nice place
Course is a very nice layout and beautiful. Very good value. Appears they have a problem with their regular players not fixing ball marks on the greens. Greens were beautiful and putted well but all have lots of small dead spots that look to be from ball marks people didn’t fix in time.
Thanks for playing.
I wish all players were like you and fixed their ball marks!!
We will remind them to fix marks!
Beautiful course
This is a beautiful, well-kept course. Unfortunately, they don’t enforce pace of play rules and we endured a rediculous 6 hour round behind a golf club’s supposed tournament. They’re a freaking golf club, they should know how to keep things moving. Guess I’ll skip weekend play in the future.
Thanks for playing here. I am sorry that the pace of play was slower than normal. If groups get behind please call the golf shop and we will get a marshal out to move them along.
“Pro’s” that shoot 110
Castle Oaks, like usual is a delightful course to visit. The staff is very friendly, the course is in good shape (except for the sand traps that are nice but don’t have SAND), and then there’s that foursome that can’t find the fairway, make it to the green in 5, check out the putt from every angle before 3 putting and wouldn’t dream of allowing anyone to play through. Have they not heard of bowling? But that’s just some people that still leave the course a fun place to play.
Bunkers
Every thing is great except there's no sand In the bunkers.
Why are you sending out 5 somes?
The starter decided to send out a 5 some on a crowded holiday at 1:30 p.m. Once this group quit after 9, the pace of play improved dramatically. Before we teed off, I mentioned the 5 some to the starter and he said, "they're locals and play fast."
In the end, the round was 5 and a half hours. This is not acceptable. 5 somes are never acceptable on busy holiday weekends.
Nice excuse, but we were playing a foursome. Fivesomes are never acceptable, period.
Yes, Castle Oaks is a nice course, but there are plenty others in the area that do not send out Fivesomes or make excuses for doing so.
Thank you so much for playing here. I apologize for the slower than usual round.
The starter did not decide to send out a fivesomme, they had made a reservation one week before and we DO allow 5's after noon here as long as they keep up with the group in front and they did. It was a very busy day as the weather was perfect and the course as usual was superb. We also had an afternoon special rate that brought out even more wonderful golfers.
It is frustrating as a twosomme to play behind a packed course so I understand why you are upset.. Please call the golf shop if the group in front of you gets behind and we will send the Marshall out right away.
Have always liked this course and still do. Like every other Valley course I play, then sand (dirt) bunkers are deplorable. Make some of your bunkers grass bunkers, reduce the size of the ones you want to keep and maintain them with actual sand.
Thanks for your feedback and for being a great customer.
The bunkers are at the stage in their life where they are due for renovation. Your ideas about making them grass will be discussed.
GREAT DAY
Thought it was going to be a horrible day, It was a very windy day, however, the course played great.
Shot my best round ever, hit all but 2 fairways. Greens were rolling nice. The only issue I had was the rocks in the traps. I don't like hitting my clubs out of rocks and there are some good sized rocks in the trap behind 18th green. Other then that, enjoyed the day and the round. Will recommend it to others.
Nice round but.. .
The staff was friendly, pace of play as expected but the restrooms were filthy! Unflushed toilets, no towels and full waste bins. Gender neutral bathrooms yuk!
I love castle Oaks Golf Course. However, there needs to be some way to let golfers know, before they book the round, when there are other events happening at the course. WE arrived and were told a High school Golf championship was going on in front of us.
The staff in the pro shop was very helpful and tried to do what they could to accommodate us, but play was very slow.
Thank you so much for your positive comments and being a regular player and I apologize for the slower than usual round.
When you make a phone reservation all players are told about course conditions and tournaments. Currently when you book online there is no way to have this conversation. If you book online again please also call us if you need to know about tournaments etc.
Too Bad
We were able to t up early; but that certainly didn't help. Over 5 hours to play this course just isn't right. For some reason, there were no marshall's moving play along. We had to wait on every t-box while the 4-some in front of us hit multiple balls off the t's, looked for every one of them on both sides of the fairways, and practically sat down for lunch on every green waiting for each other to put.
I actually like to play this course; but it's too far away at any price to put up with this nonsense.
Thank you for being a Hot Deal player.
We have been running a $29 Tuesday Special after 11:00 am and it has proved very popular. If you make a tee time a little later, say around 2pm, then most of the play will have cleared out and you will have a faster round. I am sorry that the round was a little slower than you would have liked.
Great course
It challenges you with water, and the rough.
Maybe penalizes would be a better description, that is if YOU don't play smart and take your medicine.
Stayin the fairway and you'll truly enjoy it.
Too much time searching
I have low double digit handicap and I love the course. I do think rough is way to deep. Played with an older couple sprayed the balk a little. We spent a good amount of time just looking for their balls even though they were not far off fairway. I also spent too much time looking for a few of my wayward shots. Great course just think the rough doesn’t need to be as long as it is. We also played in five hours and kept up with the group in front of us in fact waited in several occasions. Maybe they were searching too?
Thank you for playing here.
The rough is not usually this long but 4" of rain last week followed by almost 80 degree weather means that it is growing like crazy!
