Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Lots of variation
The variety of holes and challenges make Castle Oaks a joy to play. There are a couple of short par fours, some quite long ones, a reachable par five and the others require three well played shots. Holes one and two are challenging, so get warmed up. And 17 and 18 are very tough so you won't make up any strokes there. You'll hit every club in your bag. The course is always in good shape except for the sand traps which need more sand and it needs to be sieved to remove pebbles.
MUCH DIFFERENT
I'd played the course before, but many years ago. The surrounding residential areas are all built in now, but don't really affect play.
I didn't remember all of the marshy areas and lakes. Some holes have hazards on both side of the driving areas, and some forced carries.
The course was in excellent condition, with no cart restrictions, which was surprising due to a lot of rain the previous few weeks. Most other courses were still "cart path only" at the time.
Challenging but fair
Great experience for all levels of play. Most holes are wide enough for a hacker like me, greens were very nice and well groomed. All the equipment was first rate and location was worth the extra drive .
Nice Round
I like the hot deal with Golfnow but when I checked in I felt like the lady in the proshop was really unhappy with me using golfnow.
Nice course, but reclaimed water had an unpleasant odor.
Really nice course and just enough challenge for intermediate golfers. We will definitely come back to this course.
Pace of play
Every thing was going well then as we were finishing up on the 13th green this happened. A tournament was placed on the 14 tee block in front of us. a shotgun tournament was starting in front of us. HOW DOES THAT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!! Very disappointed with the pace of play for the rest of that round.
Course is in great shape
Course is in awesome condition, great price through Golf Now, well worth the drive.
A great track from the day it opened
Castle Oaks is a wonderful track with very interesting variety of holes and an easy 45 minutes from downtown Sacramento. While drought is affecting every course, have to say that the fairways and first cuts of rough are getting pretty ragged and uneven at Castle. Very little roll as a result and some poor lies. However, greens remain very good and true. Started playing here when it opened in early '90s; still love the place. P.S. Not the place where you get a lot of friendly interaction with shop staff, but a great place to play a fun golf course and the bar/grill look like a friendly community place. I just seldom stay because I'm driving a distance.
Don't WAIT must play there
I have played there many time always a great
time,. Can't wait to go back
Lots of fun
As my 1st time playing it had some challenges that were hard to understand. I paired up with other who tried to help as best they could, but some holes are blind and could not see the greens from the tees. I dropped at least 10 strokes as a result of not knowing the course. Overall it was fun.
Mixed Experience
Used cart - started behind a threesome of inexperienced young men who were INCREDIBLY slow. Course was lightly played however so jumped ahead of them and made up hole later. Heavy watering on course. Greens good to excellent. Starter was a bit snide I thought. Not usually the case at this course though. Fun, interesting course to play!
Love this course one of my favorites
This is one of my favorite courses and definitely a must play. Great condition good birdie opportunities and good scenary.
Feedback
With the exception of tournament players ahead of us slowing pace of play, the course is in great condition, considering drought and all.
I took advantage of the discounted rate offered for this day as I'd never seen it offered this low. Would play here more frequently if same discount were offered. It is quite an investment of time to drive to this location so lower rates help offset that.
great day
Started the day with breakfast in the restraunt. Food and service was terrific. Course was in great shape and we finished 18 holes in 3 1/2 hours. Perfect Sunday.
this course is fun to play
I would recommend this course to anyone who likes a well maintained course , my hats off to the grounds crew great job
Fix Your Ball Marks
Love this course. Course is always in great shape except for the ball marks on the greens. NOBODY seems to care about fixing their ball marks. Myself and the guys I was playing with fixed two to three each on just about every green. Give the Marshall a ball mark tool and have him go around and start fixing ball marks. When he get's tired of it he will start informing everyone on proper golf etiquette.
Nice course in Ione!
very impressed with the condition of this course...greens were in great condition and fairways were also very nice! A couple of challenging holes but I really enjoyed this course. I can't wait to get back again!
great course
some challenging holes other holes good scoring chances
great condition
The course was in great condition and the pace of play was excellent. The length of the course gives any handicap player there money worth.
YOU ROCK!!!
What a beautiful course.
Well worth the short drive from Sacramento.
