US Open Rough and Little white flowers
Tee boxes, yes, they need work. Wet conditions have kept the rough up and the fairway flowers aplenty. Like the course but have never ever lost so many golf balls on good shots. Hope they can get the mowers out soon.
Great Course with a couple shortcomings
Played today with some buddies on their recommendation. We got a great deal on one of the websites and so the price was great. However, I am giving this review based on what this course should be and what they advertise themselves to be, and not based on the bargain I got. I liked the course and by and large the fairways and greens were great. However, this is an upscale club and because of this I look at the whole course. The tee boxes were pretty bad on a couple of the holes. The range was also lacking in terms of teeing area. The recent weather and the fact it is the winter may be the cause of this. So, when I come back later in the year I will see if this improves. The grille and on-course food was really good. I had a lot of fun and by all means I will come back. I just feel for as good a course as this is, the whole experience should be top shelf. Look forward to playing again.
short but will designed
The greens are in real good shape. The ball rolls smooth. The fairways are ok but the tee box are as dug up as a baseball diamond. The course is a beautiful design by Palmer although it is very short for being modern. The white tees would be women tees at other places. I played during the week but the weekends can be real slow. A good deal for the money. If you think you are ready play the back tees on a windy day.
Going again soon
Finally got a chance to play this course and was worth the wait. Not the longest but the slopes and wind make up that. Have to be precise with your shots because there is very little room for forgiveness. Traps could use more sand and the flags could use some reflecters for range finders. Overall great experience in a great day. Looking forward to playing here again.
Great views and features
Course was great to play. The pace was awesome. I had 3 guys that I caught up to by hole 14, other than that, no one was on the course. The tee boxes were in pretty ruff shape and unlevel. The greens were fair. Overall, I would play here again.
Course is in good shape, especially the greens
I was surprised by the course conditions. Considering the conditions of other courses around the area this course has really held up. Look, this is California and we're in a water shortage all over the state. Golf courses should NOT be using water as they please so of course some areas will really struggle, like areas off to the side of a hole.
BUT, Hiddenbrooke has done a nice job of keeping the fairways and greens in really nice conditions. A lot of the courses I have played recently have had slow greens with dead patches of grass in the middle of the fairway. I was pleasantly surprised.
Pace of play has always been a problem here, part of the reason is because they get a lot of foursomes, also the fact that the course is very challenging from the 1st hole to the 18th hole plays a factor. We tee'd off around 2:30 and didn't finish until close to 730 (getting close to dark). Definitely waited on a number of holes but once you realize it's busy that's just part of the journey. Honestly, how can I be mad that other golfers had the same idea I had!
Great value for the money, I believe we paid $27.
Another thing Hiddenbrooke has been dealing with that every other course has dealt with is their sand traps. Some traps are hard, you can blame some of that on the water shortage and the heat but regardless unless you're playing a country club you can expect marginal sand traps.
Overall, it was a great day at Hiddenbrooke. As always, lost a few balls, hit some good shots and had a blast. Staff is friendly and professional as always.
Also, like everywhere else they've had huge sales on their Nike clubs. We walked in and they had a golf bag with some brand new Nike Wedges. The Wedges were originally priced at $144 (of course marked up!) but were selling for $60. Heck of a deal for a brand new wedge.
seen better days
Putting greens were generally very good, but a few were a bit slower than the others and a had a mixture of grasses making them somewhat lumpy. Many tee boxes are no longer level so driving is challenging. Not awful, but needs leveling. The fairways were the main problem. Fairways and rough are cut properly, but the fairway grass is very sparse in many areas and my ball frequently rolled to the lowest point which was hardpan/dirt. If you don't mind bumping your ball in the fairway, there was also plenty of grass. Again, not awful, but needs more grass coverage.
Keep Looking
Hiddenbrooke was once one of the best daily fee courses in the Bay Area, but a series of management changes have left it desolate and in need of major TLC. In fact, the management should pack it in, because they are ruining a once proud course. The current management will put out a tournament on the back nine after letting you tee off on the front. It's all great until you run into the tournament on 12 and your day comes to an end, This has happened not once, but twice to me and my weekly crew. The course director recently quit without notice, so maybe the new guy can turn it around. As for the course, Hiddenbrooke has among the worse tee boxes around (think Franklin Canyon) and the bunkers have us taking a free drop.
If they could pump some mone into this course, it still has among the best layouts around, however, the Casper Club isn't even worth it any more. They stopped even caring about the areas off the fairway. You can lose a ball in the rough, and if you hit it into the junk, forget it. Hasn't been weedwhacked in years. You're much better off heading over to Eagle Vines or Chardonnay than plahing Arnies old course.
Couldn't disagree with you more. I played there last weekend and actually thought the course was in really good condition compared to other courses in the area.
Right now good sand traps are really hard to find, with the water shortages all over and the heat the traps really suffer.
The only thing I would agree with is that pace of play has always an issue here.
JUST A GREAT LAYOUT
I've played several times, LV IT!
Love the Course and Staff But..............
I love the course and staff.... but the range reminded me of Tin Cup, 1/2 the tee boxes with large barren spots often leaving you with uneven footing and many of the fairway are dried out. My guess they lack water rights, budget and/or their sprinkler system is faltering. That said Hiddenbrook is a “don’t miss” golf course but at the moment only if the price is right!!
Aeration Special
Greens had just been aerated yesterday 8/7. If you like putts that roll true with speed wait a couple weeks.
Worst conditions in the Bay Area ( well second behind)
Great course layout, new management must be close to going under. They have choose to let tee boxes go, on hole 2 they have decided to not maintain 3 sand traps and put ground under repair signs in them instead ( which continued on other holes)
On the 9th tee box it was similar to playing softball as there were 3 holes and no where you could get a flat lie.
this once great course is only behind glen eagles in regards to course conditions.
$37 was too much for a Sunday at mid-day.
Need some TLC
Once great course now has fallen on hard times. Lots of dried out spots on fairways right next to overly watered mushy areas. Overgrown tee boxes. Bunkers marked as GUR's. Need to improve ASAP before things get out of hand.
Jason - Thanks for the feedback. All areas you commented on are part of our improvement plan for 2016. Progress has been made and there is more to come. We are sure you will notice the improvements next time you play with us.
Golf Outing
Very nice course. Cold and windy the first hour and a half but nice the rest of the way.
Thanks for playing and for the review. We appreciate it!
Great time
The course is awesome.A little windy but always up for that challenge. The course layout is great. Played w three other friends. Awesome course.
Appreciate the kind words. Look forward to seeing you again soon.
Just a fun day
greens and fairways well groomed. Quick check-in through pro shop. < 4.5 hour round.
Excellent to hear. Exactly what we strive for. Thanks!
Always enjoyable
We always enjoy the round at Hiddenbrooke. Course is a challenge from the correct set of tee's. Not for a newer golfer.
Thanks for taking the time to provide your comments. We are a challenging course yet as you indicated, from the correct tees, golfers of all skill levels will enjoy Hiddenbrooke. Plus, you can't beat the views!
Dont expect the tee boxes to fixed anytime soon they have been this bad for the last year. A little over a year ago we were told that they will fix them in the next 18 months. Not sure why they need 18 months for a 2 week process. I still enjoy playing here every weekend plus it just makes me a better golfer when i play courses with legitimate tee boxes lol
