Wellen Park Golf & Country Club

I played Wellen Park last year and was disappointed. This year the course has matured with the fairways and greens being in excellent condition. The designers would have benefited from an additional 20 acres to provide better spacing between some holes and this would have avoided a couple of extreme doglegs. I look forward to my next round here.

Wellen park GC is located in a brand new development on the Venice/North Port border. We were in Sarasota and just zipped down I75 to get there. No problem. Course itself is only about a year old so they are still building course related buildings like the clubhouse and pro shop. Temp facilities were fine. Most of the course is like new and the rough is just coming in. The tee/fairways/greens are all brand new. For the price of $62 each I don’t think you’ll find a better deal. Two groups in front of us. No one behind us at 320 tee time. Some delays in front but very leisurely round of about 3 1/4 hours still. Would highly recommend.

This course is maturing. The rough has grown in and balls aren’t always lost to the water hazards. There are a few doglegs that reflect too small of a footprint for the course. The greens and fairways are in great shape as are the bunkers. We enjoyed a great day of golf!

The course was in good shape.

Pace of play was not good. We were a 3 some, behind a 4 some, who on the third hole- the third hole spent at least five minutes with the cart girl,as we observed and waited from the tee box.

When the cart girl approached us I suggested she become a Ranger And tell the 4 some to play golf.

The rest of the day we waited way too often,

Our 4 hour 15 minute round would have been 3.45 max..

Excellent practice area,, Complimentary balls on the range , water stations on the course is appreciated.

GPS in the carts..

Starter wasn’t on top of his game so must be new at the job or not a golfer. Near tee time couldn’t be found and didn’t pair group up so went to tee on own and waited for rest of group. Starter finally showed up at tee box. Worst and most ridiculous thing was he came rushing down to first green and told us we needed to speed up as we were a couple minutes behind. That after group had hit a ball into us while we were on the green. He don’t know what time we teed off so he had no way of knowing if we were behind and we weren’t. Ridiculous to be told you’re behind on first green. We never saw a marshal for entire round and in spite of waiting on most holes we finished round in 4 hours so we weren’t slow players. Action of starter left a negative impression of the course and a bad feeling for our group and negatively impacted what could have been a much better day. Starter needs better training or to be replaced.

The course is really a fair layout. The greens were really fast but a little dried out. I would suggest this course for sure. Guys at the bag drop weren’t the friendliest but I’m finding that this is true at many courses. Maybe they aren’t retired yet? :)

Played here last year when the course was fairly new and it’s only gotten better. Great practice area, and the course is in great shape. The layout is fun with a few crazy dog legs. Pro shop and clubhouse are still being built, so strictly golf as of now. I will play this course every time I am in the area.
