Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club
About
Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club is situated in the heart of South Hall County. The course sprawls across 150 acres of rolling countryside with natural wetlands comprising 19 of those acres. The golf course has a traditional Scottish links design that also incorporates a few mountain holes. It's a layout that will always keep you guessing. It may not be the most formidable golf course in the area, but it shouldn't be underestimated either. The course strikes a good balance between being forgiving enough for high handicappers and challenging enough for more advanced players. The par 3s are tough and the diverse par 4s come in all shapes and sizes. Royal Lakes Golf & C.C. is a shot maker's layout that requires accuracy and thoughtful strategy. The most memorable hole on the golf course is the par-5 11th, which features an intimidating island green.

Hole 11 Green Photo submitted by baldeagle218 on 05/17/2019
Worth the drive!
First time playing this course and i was pretty impressed with it. Seemed like the fairways on every hole sloped back to middle which made most hooks or slices role back toward the middle. The roughs are exactly what they say they are, rough! they were a little long and could have used a mowing. Even with the slopes back toward the fairway your ball could get caught up in the grass making for interesting shots since the ball would be either above or below your feet. Seemed like a lot of the greens were protected by a bunker on the approach. Greens rolled pretty good however from about the 9th hole on there were a lot of brown patches on the greens. Hopefully they will get that corrected over the next couple of weeks. Pace of play was great. Twosome in front of my foursome so we never had to wait. Took just a little over 4 hours to complete our round which I consider normal for a Sunday. Overall it was a great round and will definitely play this course again.
Great course, staff is horrible
We arrived and were greeted and shown where to check in. While paying the mans attitude went pleasant to bothered when he said "Oh, you booked through GolfNow. You will be paired with another twosome. Just go to your cart and be ready when they show up." His explanation was that they were fully booked. We went to the cart and started our round at 9am as booked without waiting for the other mystery twosome. No one was in front of us, no one was pushing up behind us. We even stopped for 15 minutes at the clubhouse after hole 9. 10 thru 18 we saw no one else on the course. Read the reviews for this course on google and you will see that they obviously have a problem with people that book thru GolfNow. The course is ok, nothing made me want to go back. The clubhouse grill said closed until further notice so bring a snack.
Fun Layout but course conditions need to be better
I have played the course before and I really like the layout of the course. There are several elevation changes throughout the course and several challenging holes. The par 5's are pretty easy, but be careful of 18 because your second shot is a blind shot with water in front of the green that you can not see from your second shot.
The Greens were VERY slow and the grass was long. It seemed as though the greens had not been cut for several days. The rough around the course looked as though it had not been cut in over a week. The overall condition of the course has gone down since last time I played the course. One thing that has improved 100% since the last time I played the course is the amount of ball marks on the green. Last time I played the course there were ball marks all over the greens. Today the greens had very few ball marks, but they were very long and had not been mowed and were very slow.
I will be back again to play just to see if the course conditions were poor today simply the entire maintenance staff was on vacation this week or if the course really is going down-hill in the overall conditions. The management of the course needs to put signs in front over every bunker "rake the bunker when you leave." Every bunker I saw had foot prints and areas where people had not raked the bunker when they were done in the bunker. The course conditions today reminded of a low-end municipal golf course that has a very little budget for maintenance and up-keep. Too bad, because it usually is a nice, fun course to play.
SUPER SLOW greens
Greens are the slowest I have ever seen them. Not worth the price I paid.
Great experience
Went to play the course for the first time with a friend who has played it often. Wanted to play it prior to
playing again next Monday in a tournament there.
Wonderful experience as I truly enjoyed the course and those running it. Spoke with Director of Golf
Chip Spiler upon checking in and really enjoyed the
conversation as well as the guidance on how to play the course (some unique holes and blind shots!) and what next Monday's tournament will be like. I would
thoroughly recommend this track!
Great Course........but
Love this course. Only issue was the harassing ranger with his racial nickname calling. Don't need to be in a public position if that is his character, and it sure seems like it is. But beyond that, this is a championship style course
Loved it!
Even though the greens were airated, I love this course and will go back.
Lots of water
Awesome layout. Really tricky but really scoreable if you're playing well. Only thing that could've made it better would have been a hole preview on the scorecard for each hole, sometimes there was trouble on a few holes that we hit into that we were not aware of because it wasn't visible from the tee.
Great course
Great public course. Everything was in great shape and even though it was busy the pace was good. Can't beat it for the price
Good Course - Pace of Play Not Well Managed
The course is in good condition for late March, but a bit wet. The bent greens were also good, but should be better at this time of year. Some greens appear to be a bit overgrown with Poa Annua. The only negative was a threesome playing at a 4:45 hour pace with an open course in front of them. We skipped a hole to avoid making this a painful round. This is one of the few public/semi-private courses in NE Georgia that could be a 5-star course. The rating for this round was pushed down because play was not well managed.
Could be a beautiful course in the summer, but not early in the year. Bad conditions. Lots of blind shots.
Poor conditions on the course. There is very little grass in the fairways. The greens were okay, but quite slow. They need to be cut.
The layout is actually quite nice, but if you have not played the course, there is nothing to help you with the blind shots (of which there are many). Sometimes water comes into play, even when you cannot see it. The 11th hole in particular is a par five, where you cannot hit driver off the tee even though from the tee box all you see is fairway. Turns out that about 230 out is water all the way across. Then you have to hit a short wedge to another part of the fairway, before attempting to hit onto what is essentially an island green. Not a good hole. Or at least provide some help at the tee box. The 9th is another very unfair hole, at least for women. Even with a good drive, the second shot requires at least a 120 yard carry over water and a gaping sand trap. Not that many women can manage that consistently.
The course would greatly benefit from a few things to help the golfer who has not played the course. First, tee markers that show the general layout of the hole would be nice. It was not always obvious which way the doglegs were going. Second, have a white stake in the fairway showing the 150 mark. It would be especially helpful from the tee to gauge how far to hit the drive, especially on the doglegs. I hit through the fairway a number of times because you just cannot tell distances, especially with the elevation changes on many of the holes. Third, if you are not going to provide either of those at least have a sign on the tee box helping the player a little (e.g., 220 yards to the water).
So, overall the course probably is beautiful in the summer after it has grown in. Right now, there is not much grass. The surronding homes and settings for any of the holes is very nice.
Last piece of advice - do not play the course unless you get paired up with someone who knows the course.
Everyone likes this layout.
Greens in good shape. Fairways thin but normal for this time of year.
fun course
a few buddies and me had been waiting to play this course for awhile. we are all new to the game so we didn't want to spend a lot or be rushed. so when $12.00 showed up on golf now we jumped at the chance. it was cold and wet but was bearable. we were the only ones on the course so we could take our time, and this place didn't disappoint. i would recommend playing here whenever you can, because there are some fun holes.
