Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club
About
Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club is situated in the heart of South Hall County. The course sprawls across 150 acres of rolling countryside with natural wetlands comprising 19 of those acres. The golf course has a traditional Scottish links design that also incorporates a few mountain holes. It's a layout that will always keep you guessing. It may not be the most formidable golf course in the area, but it shouldn't be underestimated either. The course strikes a good balance between being forgiving enough for high handicappers and challenging enough for more advanced players. The par 3s are tough and the diverse par 4s come in all shapes and sizes. Royal Lakes Golf & C.C. is a shot maker's layout that requires accuracy and thoughtful strategy. The most memorable hole on the golf course is the par-5 11th, which features an intimidating island green.

Hole 11 Green Photo submitted by baldeagle218 on 05/17/2019
Bad greens
Course was fine, layout good except for maybe 1 or 2 holes. Fairways and tee boxes were fine. Greens were completely dead and don't appear to be maintained at all.
Don't play for a while until they fix greens
They had apparently damaged the greens through some type of chemical. You could see where it had been aerated but there there was black spots all over the greens. There was lots of crab grass in rough and fairways. They didn't have the prisms on the flag for gps finders. Lots of international players who didn't have a clue about golf etiquette. I was 120 yards on my 2nd shot on a par 4. The group behind me couldn't drive it to me but 2 of them went ahead and hit because they knew they couldn't hit me and I heard a golf ball being hit several times during my backstroke. No presence of a ranger in site. They had 2 starters. On 1 - 10 foot par put there was a construction crew working on a porch right near the green and in my backstroke I heard a nail gun. They guy apologized. He didn't know any better and he was just trying to do his job. But it was very apparent the home owner who was watching him work in her flannel PJs or him had no clue about golf ettiquete or there were any type of rules on construction during the day. This course is a great design and layout and has been for years. It is quite obvious the current owner could care less about golf and he cares more about the swimming pool area and the bar. If an ownership group who cared about golf and condition of the course and running it right this course would be one of the best in North Atlanta. I play it every 5 years holding out hope the condition is better and it failed miserably this time. I paid $75 this time and they couldnt pay me $150 to play it again .
Play somewhere else. Greens are terrible and no sand in the bunkers.
They need a new superintendent. The greens have dead spots all over them. There is no sand in the bunkers. They can't complain about lack of rain. All other courses around here have good greens. How their members are not complaining is beyond belief. This place used to be really good amd now is a goat ranch.
Fire the superintendent now. Unacceptable.
Great course!
The course was great! Only thing negative was no starter so two groups were pressing us right at our tee time and there was no water on the course and we didn't see the cart girl until about the 8th hole. Over all it was a good experience and nice course!
Very nice course. Unfortunately, the greens had some bears spots.
Always enjoyable
I wouldn't mind if they mow their 1st cuts to where you could find your ball. I know I left 2 balls behind that weren't out of play, but were unlocatable just off the fairway. This and a few tee boxes really need some re-do's...
Great course, Friendly staff!
When i got there no carts were available; i went to the range and an employee brought a cart to me as soon as it was available . When we made the turn we ordered food and the girls at the bar offered to drive it out to us as soon as it was ready which they did! I play this course often; hands down the best value in Gwinnett County! Only complaint is get rid if the fairway bunker on 8! You shouldnt hit a ball 280 straight off the tee and be in a bunker.

It’s a challenging course worth playing and returning only occasionally. However, there are several things they could do much better.
Pace of play. Tee times are too close which implies course is more interested in your money than your golfing experience. There was no marshal yet saw the beverage cart many times. Maybe combine the jobs?! I want often choose a course that doesn’t manage player experience well.
Needs more drinking water resources. Again, likely about the beverage cart and them.
Not a single ball washer on course nor on cart. Really?
There are several points on the course where next hole directional should be installed especially for the “new to course golfer”.
Main fairway areas, tee boxes and greens in nice shape. Secondary rough is way too tall. We saw no one mowing. Actually, only maintenance going on was limited watering of greens. Yet, several young men running around on carts without regard to golfer’s play doing what I don’t know. Joy-riding?? Maybe it’s an issue of labor resources. However, many areas of the course needs to be mowed and kept more manicured for the overall experience.
Sand bunkers are a joke. Very little has been or is being don’t to maintain them. Washed out and hard as concrete mainly. So, stay out of them as you don’t have a prayer hitting from them.
Cart paths are in bad shape. Meaning, surface is very uneven almost the entire course. So, go slow if your don’t want to throw yourself out of cart, wreck or shake yourself around the entire round.
Finally. No in-cart GPS! Really? With the type of course this is and how it could better be with above improvements, modernize with onboard gps.
I’ll be back at some point. Sparingly. However, do the things above if you aspire to be an awesome golfing experience. There are many other better courses in the area to choose without the issues stated above.

This was the second time that I have played the course since the reconfiguration of the course layout. The 2nd hole is beautiful but the landing area off the tee is too small and doesn't give the average golfer much of a choice but to lay up twice or risk hitting the ball into the water. The only other choice is to hit the ball up on to a steep hill and risking a side hill lye or hitting out of bounds. There are at least 3 par 4 holes that won't allow anything but irons off the tee unless perhaps you carry a 7-wood or a shorter hybrid. Greens were in great shape for the most part, and the course was manicured well. The amenities were top notch and the beverage cart personnel were always in circulation it seemed. There were a couple of groups on the front that held up play but once they allowed us to play through, we were able to maintain pace. We were a threesome and finished our round in just under 4 hours with a stop for some sandwiches at the turn. The course offered some challenging angles and has quite a few holes which require precise positioning off the tee. I would recommend this course to friends and will be back to play it again soon.
