Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Poor shape
Course wasn’t being taken of like in the past, fairways were dry, some greens were in bad shape. I like the course setup, it just needs some better maintenance before I show up again, including the clubhouse needs updating from the 80’s!

Pace of play was the condemning factor. That and the green quality.

Nice course
This is a very nice course. I had fun playing it. The staff was super friendly.
Course Needs Serious Work - Very Friendly Staff
I have never left a review before, but after playing this course last week I felt I should in hopes to save a few fellow golfers some money.
I am in Savannah for the summer and decided to play here because it is close to where I am staying. I will not be going back.
The greens were absolutely terrible, not bad as in patchy, too long of grass, or dead grass, but completely unplayable. Don't get me wrong, I am no scratch golfer, I am usually mid-high 80s, but there were many holes where I picked up my ball anywhere within 30ft of the pin, because it wasn't worth putting.
Large chunks of greens missing, and replaced with poorly grown/maintained grass, long stretches of green with virtually no grass - completely dead and burned up were the main factors as to why the greens were so bad.
The course layout really is not bad at all, with proper maintenence I think it would be a very fun course, I am hoping this review will help to make some changes going forward.
I don't like being negative like this but in this case I felt it was necessary. The few staff I talked to at the beginning of my round were very kind, and seemed like good people, but the condition of the course was absolutely brutal. Would not recommend unless you are a VERY high handicapper and want to avoid going to a decent course for whatever reason.

Below Expectations
Horrendous greens. Nice staff. She called me beautiful.
Course not worth the price if they aren’t improving the course.

On vacation
Greens were really bad but course was ok otherwise.
People behind us were hitting into us twice and when we told them to yell "four" to warn us, the guy just shrugged it off as no big deal. Don't think we would play it agian....maybe....

Not as expected
While many of the previous reviews were somewhat harsh, there not totally wrong. While the greens are not in great shape, there not unplayable as others would have you believe.
The tee boxes and fairways are in good shape and very playable.
The layout is extremely forgiving, no real significant difficulties for play
Making a tee time was incredibly easy, and the lady was very helpful. However checking in was a little rude. Play today was very slow with the foursome in front. But joined up with 2 of the nicest guys from the nearby army base.
Bottom line we really enjoyed our day.
they're not even trying to improve this tract
greens are bad to really bad. fairways don't have any grass and are not contoured. cart paths are terrible. this course has relatively high green fees, especially considering the course condition which hasn't improved in the last 20 years.

Play a Donald Ross classic
It’s early in the season but the golf is good! Greens rolled reasonably fast and true. Bunkers were well kept. You go to Bacon Park for the history, the solid design and the friendly, accommodating staff. Recommended without reservation!
First time play at Bcon Park
Course was in rough shape on fairways and especially greens. Hope someone will give this old course back its glory days and well cared for. Bringing back the greens will be tough! Lots of potential for the casual player like me! Great staff ….. best of luck!!

Donald Ross 1927
Bacon Park has its late 1920s Donald Ross pedigree. It is a municipal course that truly does what it is able to grow the game. The staff could not have been nicer. The pro shop is set up with reasonably priced merchandise and the snack bar adequate. There is a nice range and short game area. The putting green was closed on the day I visited and it apparently will need some work before reopening. The par threes are uniformly good. The par fours are of reasonable distance, and the routing encourages players to move the ball left and right with or against a shifting wind Because of the creative routing. As might be expected at any Ross course, It is hard to trust the edges of the greens. It is quite easy to miss a green because of the false fronts or the edges that slope down into closely mown chipping areas. This course was recommended To me, buy a golf, professional in Virginia. My visit was very satisfying and yes, I would go back again!
Nice time but not because of the golf
We had an almost perfect day; great weather, no one in front slowing us down or pushing from behind; it was a very enjoyable day. But it wasn't because the golf course was great. The course is in I won't say "poor" but certainly below average shape. The worst thing is the greens. To varying extents they are being invaded by a grass different from the Bermuda which makes bumps all over the place. So much so that on some of the greens your putt is going to pretty much be a random line towards the hole. The ball will be bouncing and changing directions--a lot. If you decide, "putting is simply not going to important in this round," you can have a nice, economical walk. If scoring is important to you, I would recommend you play elsewhere.
