A tough course when it is really dry
There hasn’t been much rain this month. Like 1/8” one day in the last 26. The fairways are torched and your ball is gonna run. They will come back with water (and they need a lot), but it seems like the fairways aren’t irrigated. Greens ran nicely, almost all of them look like they have had new irrigation installed. The ones with new irrigation have a ring around them where the sod was cut and irrigation pipe was installed. That should clear itself up in a couple weeks, but for now, it is like a tiny moat around each green.
Amazing layout for a course. Not a typical driver -> low iron into the greens. Some tee boxes require you to layup on par 4s. The front 9 is a lot easier than the back. The back 9 has a real tough stretch of holes from 12 on.
12th hole is a medium distance par 4 that requires a layup. If you've never been there, you'll realize this quickly when searching for your drive. Somewhat blind tee shot that with the dry fast fairways will end up in jail if you go too far. A good 7 iron to fairway and 7 iron to green is the play.
13th hole is bit longer distance par 4. Aim towards the right side of the fairway. It is on the side of a hill and everything feeds left. Driver and fairway wood will get you on in 2.
14th hole is about the same distance and right next to 13. It runs the opposite direction. 215+ near the right side of the fairway will dump you into 13 fairway and make a nearly impossible shot at the green. Middle left 210 yards is perfect.
15th hole is on the same hill, but same direction as 13. Getting on in 2 is tough from the normal tee boxes, but they have you teeing off in the fairway due to tee box repairs.
16th hole is a log jam; short par 3 over a marsh (probably water when not so dry). There is a long and winding path past the old tee boxes that leads to a green that is quite the hike down to from the cart path. The climb back up was intense.
17th is a par 4 that has a couple of strategically placed trees that make a fader of the ball give up on the green in 1. If you can draw it in, you've got a chance. don't miss the green right, you're in trouble there.
18th is the perfect finishing hole if you fade the ball. Keep it right in the fairway to avoid the pitfall of a deep bunker protecting a pin on the left side of the green. The green is way easier to access from the right than left. Aim at the bunker nearest the green and let it fade in.
Tee boxes: 5/10... Some were great, some were under construction, some were just dry and dead.
Fairways: 2/10... They are extremely dry and the ball runs forever on them. Great for gaining distance, but this course requires a little more surgical approach and you get in trouble long on a bunch of holes.
Greens: 7/10... Recently sanded and rolled, the ball rolls true and sticks decently. With the new irrigation around them you'll appreciate all the work they have done even if you have a baby moat of irrigation lines around them.
Clubhouse: 8/10... It's not big, but it is clean and everything looks new inside. Nice little bar area.
Range: 8/10... Pretty large footprint for a range with an automated ball dispenser.
Carts: 8/10... Normal carts, but with an upgraded GPS recently (maybe in the last year?). It makes it a lot easier to see the other carts on blind shots.
Staff: 9/10... The staff was extremely nice. They asked us questions about what we were looking for in a course and actually followed up with us once we were done with the round. One employee even offered to take my cart back for me after I had loaded up the truck to head home.
Overall good for the value, but the fairways are in dire need of water. If you're looking for a challenge in the dry conditions, this is the place for it. Once we get a bunch of rain and the fairways come back it'll be a great spot. I’m a 12 handicap and shot an 86 with an average round.
What Happened?
This course is usually a satisfying track. I only played 15 holes because 1 and 9 were closed. There was slow play on #5 so we skipped it. Sand where on various greens, tees on #15 were closed. This was the worst shape I've seen this course over 15 years. Hope they get it together soon. I wouldn't recommend until changes are complete.
Total Disappointment
First, two holes were closed for maintenance and a third hole, a par five, was shortened by 150 yards for maintenance of all the tee boxes. I was not told that I'd be playing 15 1/2 holes when I reserved a tee time. Second, we were told that three holes were cart path only which was fine. Second, on three other holes, I tried to drive onto the fairway and the cart stopped and required me to drive in reverse back to the cart path. There were no signs indicating that those three holes were also cart path only. Third, similar to when I played the course many years ago, the course was not in great condition. Fourth, at the driving range, the ball machine was locked so I told the pro shop employee that I could not get balls. He retrieved a bucket of balls for me and gave it to me at no cost-- that was nice. While I was hitting balls, the guy driving the ball retriever on the driving range yelled at me and asked where I got the balls also telling me that the driving range was closed. Apparently, the pro shop didn't know the driving range was closed.
Now I remember why I decided years ago that I would avoid playing at this course.
Disappointed
Back nine better than first nine. Most tee boxes on front nine sand, fairways dry. Greens overall in good shape.
Pace of play slow, skipped 2 holes. Would play again w/ better than posted rates. Suggest senior & foursome rates & marshal(s) to monitor play, 4:15 maximum time
CC of Gwinnett
Course layout is great but the course is in poor shape. All greens had weeds and a ring of exposed dirt encompassing the entire green. Majority of the tee boxes were made up entirely of sand. Some par 4 tee boxes were entirely closed and moved to the fairway. There were approach areas covered in sod. I would not play this course again until conditions improve.
Course is over priced
Seems to be state owned with little concern for player experience.
I paid their full price even though, 10-18 was closed for repair. They did a poor job of managing the number players cramming into only 9 holes.
For the price, I could have had a better experience anywhere else, (except Collin’s Hill of course)
Getting better
They are trying n g to bring this course back but its noneeds work t there yet.
GPS in the carts needs alot of work. Prices are not reflective of the current conditions as you can play several courses in the area for the same or less and they are not under construction.
This is a good course but still needs work and the cost should be lowered until it is repaired.
No Notice of Hole Closure
Poor review was due to not giving notice at all that back nine is closed so we had to play front nine again. So frustrating for paying full green fee.
Course Review
Course is in very bad shape, tees are basically sand, every green has repair work around the perimeter, only the front 9 was open, we were not told that when making the reservation. Took 2 hours for the front and 2:45 for the 2nd 9.
Course layout is nice, has potential but needs a lot of work, investment, then time.
Back 9 Closed, Poor Conditions
We booked a Hot Deal to play on Wednesday, April 1st. Upon arrival, we were informed that the back nine was closed for maintenance. While we were offered the option to play the front nine twice or accept a rain check for nine holes, this information was not disclosed at the time of booking. I had checked the course website in advance, and there was no indication that half of the course would be unavailable.
Unfortunately, the overall course conditions were also quite poor. The tee boxes had little to no grass, the fairways were extremely firm with minimal turf coverage, and the greens were surrounded by noticeable rings of dirt. Overall, the lack of transparency regarding course availability combined with the subpar conditions made for an underwhelming experience. It will take a lot of maintenance and time to improve these course conditions.
Tee boxes bad, fairways bad, greens were pretty good. They are working on the course but don’t tell you when you make a tee time or when you get to the course.
Wouldn't recommend
$35 Course for $70. Would not recommend until the course is properly taken care of.
Dangerous Play and Complete Lack of Etiquette
I had a very frustrating and dangerous experience at this golf course. While our group was still finishing up on the green of a Par 3, the group behind us hit their tee shots right into us. This is a basic rule of golf etiquette and safety that was completely ignored. It seems like there are many players here who lack basic manners. The course really needs to step up their marshalling to ensure the safety of all players. I was very disappointed.
This course needs work!
I generally like the layout of the course but the condition of the course itself were terrible!! I won’t play it again until repairs have been made & the grass has grown in.,
Course condition
Play was smooth and greens were in good shape for early spring.
