Stay Away
I’ve played over 100 golf courses this year and this was by far the worst I’ve seen so far. Start at the beginning, the pro shop was an empty space. No gear, clubs or much of anything inside.
Next, the course....
The layout is goofy and doesn’t set up well from any of the offered tee boxes. So many short holes that require an iron off the tee, but landing areas that are so narrow and slanted that even a good tee shot has a good chance of being in the woods.
Course conditions....
Shut this course down and start over. Most tee boxes were just sand with a few weeds mixed in. Fairways were dead and too hard to make even a shallow divot without the potential of breaking a wrist or a shaft.
Bunkers were hard with a sprinkle of loose sand on top.
The greens were awful. They had to have been arrested at some point in the past and not cared for ever since. Grass growing back in deep ruts that often didn’t allow you to putt at the hole without it veering far off course.
Cart paths were so broken apart, several times if you didn’t slow down to a crawl you risked going airborne.
It was embarrassing to bring my out of town guest to this dump and I can assure you we won’t be returning.
Would have been better taking my money and lighting it on fire in the parking lot.
Always a great golfing experience!
Friendly staff; no hassles. Excellent facilities and course in great shape, notwithstanding hot, dry weather. Needs rain, but still great course.

Demanding Golf Course
This course requires accurate shots from tee to green. There are several blind tee shots, and very tight holes on the front nine. The fairways and greens were in terrific shape and the greens rolled very true. The same can’t be said for the tee boxes though, so not sure what happened with them. Definitely a fun course to play though.

Riddled with weeds and greens work had been done
Courses should notify you before you purchase play that the greens are in transition, horrible day of gold due to poor greens and the weeds are everywhere. I thought about being a member of this country club, not anymore. the need to work the landscape a lot harder

Still Good Value, but Greens Struggling
I've always enjoyed the challenge of playing Smoke Rise, as playing well here means you can pretty much play well anywhere. IOW, you better hit the ball pretty straight and putt well.
But man, it's a shame that the greens have not been nearly as good as they were for several years. I was under the impression that Mini Verde / tiff dwarf strains of Bermuda grass were supposed to be super resilient, but the last two times I've played here (within a month), the greens have either been healing from a small tine punch or in this most recent case, a weird technique in which little shallow ruts were sliced into the entire green complex. The greens still rolled fairly true but the speed of the normally swift greens was rendered quite erratic and unpredictable.
As difficult as it can be to get into position on these greens for a good look at birdie or par, it's frustrating knowing that you are simply hitting and hoping with no real expectation of making the putt because of how inconsistently the greens are rolling.
I'm not sure if it is simply a lack of resources or poor management, but what was once a signature trademark of SRCC -- superb greens -- has now been lost. It's a difficult golf course with some strange holes, uneven lies everywhere and some terrible bunker sand, but other than reasonable pricing, there is little incentive to play there with the greens in various states of disrepair and several tee boxes (gold or black) having deteriorated severely under the stress of summer heat and humidity.
I hope they can right the ship and turn it around for the fall, and I'll gladly pay $50-60 for some pristine greens in cooler weather, but for now, gonna take a break from SR till further notice. PS -- also drive carefully and alertly as there are several areas where buckled concrete slabs have made the cart paths quite treacherous, which is quite unsettling on such a hilly golf course.
Perhaps it has been too wet and there are fungal and moisture issues in the root system, but barring a temporary closure to let the greens recover, they probably won't return to good or excellent condition until we get some dryer weather. Anyway, I hate to see it because these greens were some of the best in the state and seemed impervious to weather and heavy play. Apparently not! Good luck.

Not in good shape
Tee boxes are straight dirt and sand traps have more water than the lakes. They’ve definitely let the maintenance slip to the point that now the course needs a lot of work. There’s no traps you can actually hit appropriately out of.

Has potential
Smoke Rise is a challenging, undulating 18 hole course near Tucker. I like to come up here on weekdays when the greens fees are a bit lower and the course is not crowded. I played today and the course was virtually empty. The course has a good variety of holes and many forced carries.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the tee boxes are in horrendous shape. The bunkers are suffering from the frequent heavy rains we’ve gotten this summer. Even the greens were showing some areas, with sanded patches on a few holes. This course was in much better shape last year.
Also beware - this course has some of the worst kudzu I’ve ever seen. On many holes, entire tree lines are draped with vines and it is virtually impossible to find balls hit into the woods.
I hope the conditions come back around, as this is one of my favorite layouts easy of Atlanta.

It was good for the money

Difficult to play - especially for first time
Tee boxes not always well-marked nor direction to next hole. Cart paths in terrible shape in places. Otherwise, beautiful and challenging. Course staff very friendly and helpful.
