Great Course, Great Price
This was our 3rd or 4th time playing Southland. We had a group of 6, and the starter and owner were great with accommodating us in 2 back to back groups of 3. Pace was pretty slow, the group in front of us was holding everyone up, but no big deal!
Owner is a nice guy and takes care of his customers! I wish there were more water coolers throughout, several times they've been empty!
Course itself was in great shape...stay away from the rough though...its really thick and overgrown and a poison ivy nightmare...better to just let the ball go than try and find it! There are a few holes with granite ribbons from nearby Stone Mountain that make for a challenging time!
Greens are top notch, really good condition. Tee boxes could use a little help, but its hot and they were busy so I certainly understand.
One of our favorites to play, more laid back and cheaper than Stone Mountain and Mystery Valley nearby. Good cooler policy. Carts are in good shape and gas powered!
Disappointed in this course
I paid $18 on Golfnow, didn't think that I would ever be unsatisfied while only paying $18 for a round of golf. Unfriendly staff, and I had to wait about 10 minutes to get a golf cart. Guy in "pro shop" was rude to me and my girlfriend, and seemed annoyed to have to look up to see when our tee time was. Once we finally got to the first tee, we had to wait another 20-30 minutes to tee off because the course overbooked tee times and took us around 6 hours to play. Course layout is decent, but not upkept well. Weeds in bunkers, unlevel and dried out teeboxes, etc. However, the greens rolled well surprisingly.
Great course
I absolutely love this course! Best course for your money. Some greens were under construction at the time but was still a lovely course
Trying hard but...
Southland is basically a good track but the conditions are very uneven...from day to day or week to week things may be better or worse - even from hole to hole. But it's cheap, so Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances ;-)
Slowest course ever!
They overbooked the tee times and had four groups going off at the same time. The course was so backed up it took us almost 2 hours to play 5 holes. We finally quit and had to forfeit the money we paid for 18 holes. This is the second time this has happened. Will not go back.
Southland is a fun layout. Played here a lot back in the 1990s. Course has come a long way back in the last few years. Greens are in great condition, roll true, on the slow side. Cups, burned edges, were poor. Will be coming back. Bring your own beverages, none available during your round and you don't return to the clubhouse at the turn.
Not Again
Staff was great. Only irons off the practice range. Most holes folded in corners to give blind landing areas taking driver out of hands. Greens very slow but fantastic shape for this 11Jun17 round. Biggest prob, only 1 water station on 18 holes that never comes back to clubhouse til the end. Unacceptable. Hate to say, but a country course. never again........
Long, somewhat challenging, nice course!
Course seemed in pretty good shape. Challenging enough for us! Several blind holes, plenty of woods and water holes. Clubhouse is PACKED with clubs and balls, so if you need any, there ya go! Staff is very friendly. Can't take the cart to the car, so be sure to drop off your clubs. The play was slow that day. Backed up on several holes. We quit at the 12th and went back to the club house. One player said it's very unusual to be that slow on a Saturday. Staff compensated us for the inconvenience. Only one drinking water stop shared by two holes, 5th & 11th, I believe. They had run out of water at the time we stopped. It was filled as fast as it could be. 9th hole doesn't lead back to the clubhouse, so you'll only get there after the 18th hole. You can bring your own cooler. Overall it was enjoyable. We'll definitely give it another try to get in all 18.
Good Value
The greens were in good shape but a bit fury. They need a marshall to improve pace of play by limiting two players and single players when course is busy.
Cool Course/Great Price
This was my first time playing this course but it won't be my last. Beautiful course! The pace was a little slow but it was Saturday morning. Standing water in the traps was the only negative. Not being familiar with the layout, I hit a few good shots to bad spots. All things considered, nice round on a BEAUTIFUL course. The Lithonia/Stone Mountain area has some nice courses at great prices. Atlanta traffic sucks but your golf is hard to beat!
Not bad for the money
The course itself and greens were in good shape the tee boxes were a little rough ion certain holes… All in all a decent value any good layout!
Hidden Gem
Fantastic layout that will have you thinking about every shot. This is not a swing and rip kind of course. Scenic holes, water, elevation changes and FANTASTIC greens. Clubhouse is old school and nothing to shout about but hey, I don't play golf to hang out in the clubhouse!
Must Visit Pro Shop
One of the first courses I ever played at as a kid in Atlanta. The pro shop will take you back a few decades w/ memorabilia to prove it. A must visit!
Course is an old design tucked right next to Stone Mountain. Not too many driver holes, it will test your long irons and hybrid play from the back tees. Affordable and overal good course.
Great experience
The greens are great. Course was open and this made it very enjoyable.
Challenging but Doable
I'm nearly 70 and still love to play but some north Georgia courses can be too hilly and hard to navigate even with a cart. South land is contoured well with only a couple of holes that were taxing to me. Loved the layout and the distances. One of the best deals in the Atlanta area!
Scenic and Challenging Course
This was my first visit, and definitely not my last. Advice from the pro: "the key to the front nine is keeping the ball on the fairway". Every hole is a tough read with woods on one side, sand on another, a few ponds and creeks that sneak up on you. There are even boulders to clear on a few back 9 holes. Makes for a varied, difficult course.
From most tee boxes you can't see the flag, let alone the back half of fairway. Could have been mowed better in some spots, but overall everything was well-kept. The greens are surprisingly fast!
Our game only suffered from groups around and behind us. A couple groups came up quickly behind and either played through or hit into us. We think they started too soon after us.
I'm very much looking forward to another round here!
