About
Nestled in the foothills of the north Georgia mountains, Sugar Hill Golf Club tumbles across elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. The course is artfully laid across the rolling hills, weaving through stands of mature trees, to provide it with the maximum level of challenge and the best views. The natural contours played a role in determining the placement of the bunkers around the greens and fairways as well as shaping the sharp doglegs. As if the golf course didn't already have enough challenges, there are also deep grass canyons and water hazards to contend with. The par-4 fifth and the par-3 12th are memorable water holes, both featuring large lakes that lurk in front of the greens. Sugar Hill G.C. is known as one of the toughest golf courses in the area.

Tough Day
Sunday afternoons are always challenging with pace of play, but waiting 5 to 10 minutes before every shot is out of line even for an amateur golfer. I am a lower handicap golfer, but this course was challenging for me playing it for the first time, not to imagine being a high handicapper. Throw in some blind shots and several long carries, and you get really slow play. Left after nine and took my spouse to dinner.

Bang for buck
Excellent layout, conditions fair, marshal very unfriendly (insultingly so). I waived it off as a one off, b/c otherwise a very fun round of golf.
Probably would not recommend for high handicaps. Lots of target golf and elevation changes here.

Another day at the course
Great staff. Sand traps are not well maintained and treated as ground under repair. Restaurant closed on Sunday, which was a bummer because we would have purchased food and drink.

Think twice
Hadn't played this course in quite some time but moved closer to it in last year so thought I would give it a try. There is a range but it is sorely lacking. The fairways and greens were good but he traps were useless. Most of them lacked sand and had grass, weeds and even small bushes growing in them. One hole on the front 9 was closed for some reason and the only notice we received was a sign on a par 5 saying it was closed. We drove around it to the next hole but could not figure out why it was closed. No one notified us that we would only be playing 17 holes when we paid. It's a good layout and challenging but showing signs of decay and neglect.

Needs some serious maintenance
Bunkers are absolute trash, have not been maintained in literally months, 2 ft tall weeds in some of them and zero actual sand. By far the worst I have ever seen
Greens were very slow and bumpy.
I suspect half of their greens keeping crew quit and they have not been able to replace them.
The bar has a sign stating it was closed due to staffing but if you knew someone looking for a job, let them know

Decent course
Enjoyed the layout and difficultly of the course.
The tee boxes need some work and also grass clippings were everywhere. The first time I played here was summer 2020 and it was beautiful no complaints and now a year later I was not pleased with the conditions and maintenance of this course definitely not worth the $57 I paid more like $30

Everything was fine until my 14th hole
The initial check-in process was great. The range was good. Didn't have any food but it smelled good. The starter had me pair with a lady and had us start on the back 9 since there was 2- 4somes just teeing off on 1 and just another twosome that he sent off to start with 10. He said it would allow us to keep a good pace of play and not be waiting around. So again, we started with the back 9. We finished and started the front. On the 5th hole there was what looked like a maintenance man working on a part of course between the tee box and the fairway, He ducked down when I teed off for safety. My playing partner has already gone ahead up to the red tees past this man. As I came down the cart path, he motioned for me to stop. Keep in mind the previous twosome who started on the back nine and my playing partner had already passed him but he decided to stop me, a black man, and asked if I was who he just saw on the back nine. I said yes. He said how come you're playing again on the front nine. To which I responded I'm not, because of the back jam on the front nine they had us play the back first. At that point he said well enjoy the rest of your round then. I felt profiled and unwelcome on the course. I golf 2 to 3 times a week, and while I'm no pro, I understand golf etiquette, the integrity it takes to play the game, and the character expected and what I exhibit when I play. To have my integrity questioned, especially when no one else that had played and started with the back nine that I was aware of was questioned. I will not ever play this course again. And if anybody asked me if the course is any good, I will convincingly say it's a fairly okay course with mostly decent staff yet not welcoming to Black individuals, because that certainly is my experience.
