Had i known this course was under reconstruction I would have played elsewhere.
Course is in poor condition due to recent construction along with yearly maintenance. Otherwise a beautiful day to play golf.
Bad conditions.
Because of work on course the course was in poor condition. Because carts were not allowed on the back 9 play was extremely slow,
Not going to try again for a long time.
This use to be one of our regular courses and I will not go back from a long time. Previously Oakmont was a good value with friendly course staff and great service at the bar. Based on word of mouth regarding course maintenance issues I had not been in a while but decided to check it out with a twilight round.
Pro shop staff seemed stressed even though the course looked wide open. It took the bar tender to provide an understanding of the massive work being done on the 50+ year old irrigation and drainage system. Once on the course hole 3 has been turned from a par 5 into a par 3 with a bucket in a field and a 300 yard bar 4. The rest of the course was in bad shape on par with Adobe Creek post bankruptcy and not at all up to my normal experience at this course. Oakmont's website says they are offering discounts due issues related to the course but at 2:30pm we paid $30 to ride which is equal to previous super twilight rack rates.
Play was peaceful on the course and no word from the marshal. After a pleasant stop at the bar after nine holes we were on the 18th green at 6PM...less than 4 hours from starting our round. With the whole bar tab on the line and my friend in the bunker about to shoot when the cart staff yelled from the top of the hill 'Come on guys, hurry up!' Paying to have some righteous kid shout at us like we were the problem with this rubbish (censored) hole was too much. A visit to the pro-shop was pointless and as I said a year or more ago reviewing this course, "the bean counters are in charge." Visiting Oakmont is a just another sad example of poor management valuing balance sheets over their customers.
The moral of the story is the green fees are overpriced for the quality of the course. The staff is under too much pressure from management to worry about costs at the experience of customers. Even when a problem is raised, staff is too afraid of management reprisal to address the issue. My observation is that all of the quality golf hospitality staff has been fired over the last couple years, leaving Oakmont a shell of its former self. The great bar experience is no longer able to justify the golf or the drive. It was with great disappointment to have to shake our favorite bar tender hand goodbye and hope he could serve us again under better circumstances.
Wait until the irrigation updates are done.
First off, I like Oakmont west. Pleasant course and surroundings. Plus it's a good walking course. However, I didn't realize how extensive the construction was. 17th hole is completely shut down (think Bushwood at the end of Caddyshack after the explosions). The back nine is in pretty bad shape now because of the construction. Our foursome decided we would use our discretion for declaring 'ground under repair' since they course managers couldn't possibly have that many signs. I will stay away until the construction is done and everything has grown back and been groomed.
All in All a wonderful time
Course was under repair so number 17 was closed. they modified 3 to make it numbers 3&4 so we could record 18 holes. Renovations should be complete by dec. by then it will be winter so next spring should be great golf. greens could use some attention. spottie. I reccomend they fill in the pots holes better. other than that had a good time.
Horrible at best!
The course was horribly maintained. All cart paths hurt to drive on.. Tree roots, pot holes.. The back nine WAS beyond horrible. They had replaced the sprinkler systems but never bothered to reace the grass. Large round sprinkler heads were in plain view if the greens and tee boxes.
I'm thankful it was $30 but I won't play the course again.. Unless the paid me $100. Honestly the practice driving range was the second nicest part of the entire course... The driveway heading out of the golf course was the first!
challenging course, with construction being done
Oaknont West is a difficult course if you don't have good control of the direction of your shots. Being surrounded by houses, long thick rough, frequent trees in fairways and c onstruction on three or four holes make this a good but difficult place to play. We enjoyed our round and look forward to returning to Oakmont West .
Wonderful course in poor condition!
They should have told you that they are doing major repairs to their sprinkler system. ...one hole closed , other with equipment & workers & mud.
under repair
We were camping in a nearby city and used golfnow to find something reasonable to play. Past reviews were mixed, but I decided to try the course. It was obvious from the start that it was under repair, as one hole was closed, another was split in to two holes to make up for the shortage, and there was major ground work being done. With that said, the course was empty; I played by myself, and finished in just over 3 hrs. Score was comparable to other western courses I have played on this RV trip.
#10 Hole under construction, other than that, great value for price. Plus GPS on carts!

course need lots of work
The course was unplayable. They should have warned us that the course was in that condition.
Currently Construction
First par 5 split into two holes and #10 eliminated for now with construction. Allot of greens are a bit patchy as mgmt claims they lost water main during 3 days of 100+ degrees. Will be back to greatness once all is sorted!
Challenging Course
Although I may just be a hacker, I know great deals when I see them, and although the price was pretty good, the fairways were pretty shot. A lot of areas without grass, cracks in the ground and sometimes the inability to tell the rough from the fairways. However the greens were in great shape. Overall a pretty good experience.
Good course in bad condition
This course has several things going for it--fun, traditional, well established layout, easy walk, scenic (except for the houses), nice practice facilities centrally located, friendly folks, and reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the greens are a mess--fungus? Even where the grass is healthy, they run soooo sloooow. The fairways have numerous burnout areas as well, which makes for crazy situations: Two tee shots landing on the fairway within three yards of each other--one is sitting in thick 1"+ high wet grass and the other on hardpan dirt. The course is just not in good shape, but would be fun if it was. One design criticism--there were two very small elevated greens I remember that had buried elephants, making for very difficult play. I think they are out of place on a relatively easy track.
Course in terrible shape.
Paid $32 per player for 4 people which seemed to be a good deal for a Friday round which included a cart. However, I arrived at the pro shop only to find out that the greens had been recently aerated and they were offering a discount to all players. There were no true roles to be found on any of the greens and you had to kill the ball to get it near the hole. To add insult to injury, the fairways were also in terrible condition, featuring numerous bare spots on each one. I have played Oakmont many times in the past under very good conditions. If I had known what the conditions were going to be I would not have paid any amount to play that course at that particular time. Definitely a case of false advertising.
Course is all beat up and dry
I've played this course weekly for years until Oakmont discontinued their frequent player cards about 2 or 3 yeas ago. So when they discontinued that deal I play there every couple months or so. The course is in the worst shape I have ever seen in my 25 years of playing there. Top prices for a substandard course. Stay away. I wont be back until the winter.
Good value
An enjoyable course that is in decent condition (although some fairway maintenance is in order).
The fairways are burned in spots with patches of bare earth. Greens are good but overall condition is poor.
Poor condition prevail thought the course. The $32.00 GolfNow charge is not worth it!!!
Good course, great people
Love playing this course. Fairways are a bit full of fungus but it's mid summer and you'd expect it not to be great, greens good not great. People here are enjoyable to talk to and be around. See ya next time!
Course needs to be maintained better
Oakmont West has a good course layout and is very playable. The big issues are the fairways and greens are in poor condition. They need to get these issues resolved to make this a $50.00 a round course.
