River Run Golf Club in Ocean City is just minutes away from the beach. The golf course has different front and back nines that make for an interesting round. This Gary Player design starts out across a wide-open landscape before moving on to more tree-lined terrain on the backside. The tighter back nine is tougher than the first nine but overall it's an approachable golf course. The player-friendly layout is gentle enough for beginners with medium-sized greens that aren't especially difficult and generous fairways that offer plenty of room. There is modest bunkering along the greens and fairways and a few lakes and some marshland come into play as well. While River Run Golf Club may not be the most formidable test, the course provides just enough of a challenge for scratch golfers.

great course

The staff are nice and very friendly. I was allowed
to start at 12:00 when my tee time was 12:30.
The course is well maintained and in great shape.
For $30.00 green fee with cart and unlimited driving range balls this is one of the
best deals I got during my stay here in OC. I highly
recommend this course and would play here again.

Great layout, but...

I really enjoyed the layout of the course. Challenging tee shots, and challenging greens to go pinseeking.

However, the greens were that of a dog track executive 9. Slow, maybe rolling at an 8, bumpy, and it looked as if 3 different types of grass were growing on them.

Fairways were pretty good, not patchy, and the rough was nice and lush.

Teeboxes were a bit strange from the back ( very tiny ), in OK shape, and one tee box on a par 3 was a driving range mat?? Strange.

The shape of the driving range was pathetic, but at least the balls were complimentary.

Very friendly staff thought, so that is always nice.

Will not play again.

Maintenance!!!!!

A decent and challenging course if you don't mind grounds crew mowing fairways with little regard to the golfer patrons... they mowed in front of us, wouldn't stop while we hit, and ran over one ball in the rough. Also, the green grass on the front 9 was incredibly long, making it impossible to putt with any degree of confidence (but cut shorter on the back???). This is hard to understand because the area had perfect, clear, dry weather two full days before we played at noon. The ranger showed no concern when we complained and was of little help.

Finally, a staff member was stationed on one par 3 (150 yards) offering $10 chances to hit the green -- pro shop discounts as a prize. She was persistent and wouldn't take "no thanks" for an answer. Maybe this is OK if the money goes to a charity ... not if it's going to the pro shop.

As for the course, it is challenging with narrow fairways and thick, long (4-5 inch) roughs. Fairways are lined with tall oaks and pines, providing plenty of shade for hot, summer days -- probably its only redeeming factor.

Rough too rough

We got on for $35 after noon, so it was a good deal no matter what. However, compared to other courses in the same regular price range I'd play them instead.

The rough was two inches long and thick. This would be good and fine except there was no first cut or intermediate rough, just this stuff lining the fairly narrow fairways. Hitting your ball 1-5 feet wide of the fairways was too penal and not enjoyable.

Tried it again!

Had not played in years... had a bad experience there. Decided to try it again, and I really enjoyed it. Love the layout, and found that you don't want driver on every par 4.

Nice Ocean Course

I enjoyed the course overall. It was in good shape and had a nice layout. We played from the blues, which was just over 6300 yards. I will say that the par 5s and par 3s tended to be on the long side, while many of the par 4s were pretty short. There was a decent amount of water on the course, but not too much to make it too difficult. The greens were a bit easier than I've played because there wasn't too much undulation in them. Overall, though, I enjoyed the course and had a good time.

Improved conditions of course.

Improved conditions of course. The superintendent has done a good job of improving the greens from the last time we played there, although they were rough.

Everything in great shape except the greens

Course was in excellent shape however the greens were very bumpy and the roll of them was not on par with what is expected at top tier courses. I believe this has to do with the type of grass used and outside of this I thought the course was fair and playable.

will play again

We enjoyed our rounds at River Run. The tee boxes and fairways were well cared for although some very heavy watering made some of the holes play longer.
The greens were a different matter. They had been punched at some time and poana was pervasive so greens were not smooth .
The practice range is basic but functional .
We would still come back again and play if the green fees are reasonable.

Above Average Course, Great Value

This course lay-out was extremely enjoyable for my group which included a couple of mid handicappers (10-15) and a high handicapper (20+). The holes were all framed very nicely to give a well defined feel to the lay-out but there was ample room to accept all of our errant shots. Best of all, no gimmick holes! What you see is what you get.

The greens looked to still be recovering from spring aeration, something that I would not have expected during around in late June. A little disappointing as it certainly affected some putts. Also, the course was quite wet in spots even after a little rain prior to our round. Surprisingly there were grounds crew putting additional water in targeted areas on the course.

All in all this course was extremely enjoyable to play and with the Golf Now rate an exceptional value.

Beautiful Sightlines

Overall excellent. Only drawback was the greens condition. Had been punched within the last few weeks, so some dimples remained. Highly recommend based on course layout, location, and hole varieties.

Fun resort-area course

River Run is a fun track and one of the better courses in the Ocean City area. Typical Gary Player design - not particularly long, but strategic. Doesn't beat you up, but you have to place your shots to score well. I got an excellent deal from GolfNow of $35/each and it was a great bargain at that price. Course conditions were OK, not stellar, but it's still early season after a bad winter. Greens rolled well and were at a nice speed.

Excellent First visit

We were twosome & arrived 90 minutes before tee-time. Staff said that pair we were to play with had canceled. They then helped us play back nine first & this saved us 45 minutes. Also, it may be minor to many, but course has excellent toilets at mid-points of front & back nines. No porta-pots. Good Job!

Sad Disappointment.

I had the opportunity to play this course on opening day in 1991 and over the years 3 or 4 more times. While the lay out is still a Gray Player Signature design, the condition of the course does not live up to the reputation one would expect from a Gary Player Signature facility. The Greens if they were at an inner city Muni would still be an embarrassment. The round took 5:45, and the staff were completely disinterested. This is a sad disappointment to see what had been such a wonderful golf facility go down hill.

Good Course to play

This is a great course for mid to high handicapers from the white tees and a very good course for lower hanicaps from the back tees. Although it was early in the season the course was in very good condition. Airation was recently done but still in very playable condition.
