Fall is one of our favorite times of the year to travel for golf.
Children are back in school, leaving most families sitting on the sidelines at home. Even golf buddy travel is at a minimum because most people have already used up their vacation time over the summer or they've committed to upcoming holiday travel.
That leaves it easier to find tee times and places to stay. It also means potential discounts and savings on both.
The only wild card is the weather, which can get cold in northern locals or be threatened by hurricane season from Texas all the way up the East Coast.
But with a little luck and some good planning, golfers can enjoy the beauty of the changing leaves and one last trip that caps off another enjoyable golf season. We've partnered with Vrbo to determine the best fall golf destinations where you can rent a nice home, condo or villa for your group.
Here are five of our favorite fall golf destinations home to hundreds of Vrbo rentals:
-
Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Davis Love III had "ruins" built on the Barefoot Love Course to add a unique visual element. Jason Scott Deegan/GolfPass The Grand Strand, running from southern North Carolina to Pawleys Island south of Myrtle Beach, boasts enough courses for golfers to visit their entire lifetimes and still not see them all. We favor the southern end where this three-bedroom villa overlooking a golf course seems like the ideal home base to play the Mike Strantz duo of True Blue and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Plus, Pawleys Plantation was recently renovated by original architect Jack Nicklaus and The Founders Club fared well in the 2024 Golfers' Choice Top 50.

Hilton Head, S.C.
The approach plays over water on the par-4 second hole of the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Mike Bailey/GolfPass Hilton Head Island is a trendy golf destination off the coast of South Carolina. While there's some pretty good golf just off the island in Bluffton, the island life is more relaxing and convenient. This three-bedroom, two-story home with a hot tub overlooks the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort, one of three on property.
-
Branson, Mo.
Although Big Cedar Lodge has become the largest and most famous resort in Branson, there are other options for golfers shopping for accommodations and rounds. For example, we found this six-bedroom home with a rooftop hot tub that offers discounted tee times to Thousand Hills Golf Resort. Courses like Branson Hills won't break the bank like a round at Payne's Valley (although we highly recommend the splurge). The option to add a second daily round at a world-class short course like Mountain Top or Top of the Rock will add fun and value to your trip without wearing anybody out.
-
Pinehurst, N.C.
The historic Inn overlooks the 18th green of Mid Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. Jason Scott Deegan/GolfPass Pinehurst's peak seasons are spring and fall avoiding the humidity of summer. With so many evergreens, golfers won't get the same explosive colors of the changing of the leaves as destinations farther north, but nobody can compete with its golf. Experiences range from the recently renovated Southern Pines to Pinehurst No. 2, fresh off an epic 2024 U.S. Open. Vrbo offers anything from one-bedroom condos near the Village of Pinehurst to the "Chipping-Inn", a six-bedroom house built specifically to entertain up to 12-16 golfers.

Bend, Ore.
Be sure to look down at the sixth green at Tetherow Golf Club before you head down the hill. The flag's location might dictate how you play the hole. Jason Scott Deegan/GolfPass Central Oregon gets crazy busy and expensive in the summer, but temps and prices come down to more manageable levels in fall. Its golf scene is fantastic with a trio of Top 100 public courses - Tetherow, Pronghorn's Tom Fazio Course and Crosswater at Sunriver. Secondary courses like Juniper Golf Club right next to the airport in Redmond are almost as good. This two-bedroom condo features golf course views and a hot tub, or your group can stay in this three-bedroom home within walking distance of downtown's restaurants and breweries.
