Emerald Lake Golf Club
About
Emerald Lake Golf Club is one of the Charlotte area's most popular public courses. True to its name, water is a prominent feature on the golf course. It's not just the water hazards that make this a tough course though. You'll be faced with strategically placed bunkers, sloped greens, and fairways tightly lined with trees. The golf course starts out gentle enough but by the time you get to the third hole, you'll be tested with a hole that plays right into the prevailing wind. This long narrow par 4 is one of the toughest holes Emerald Lake Golf Club has to offer. You'll get a brief break with the fourth hole, but the following par 5 is the signature hole. This risk-reward hole could result in a birdie if you play it smart, but if you go for the green in two and don't make it, you might be punished with a bogey

My father came along for the ride , not a golfer but was very impressed with the beauty of this course Photo submitted by Jamie5277593 on 05/02/2013
Dissapointed
Booked tee time but site didn't say that sand is on the greens. When I checked in the guy at shop didn't mention that either and that back 9 was closed so had to play front 9 twice. People just don't care anymore!
Great layout
I thought the course was on pretty good shape for this late in the summer. It played well, and moved especially well at 1:00 pm
Hi "willsullivan" Thank you for the great review. We appreciate the feedback regarding the pace of play and course conditions. Don't forget to book your labor day tee time with us this weekend!
Nice course and staff.
Booked the night before. Staff was friendly. Didn't hit at the range but looked ok. Apparently, they are rebuilding the club house after it burned down but the trailer used as a pro shop works fine for now. Course was in good shape. Not too hard. Shot a 79 the first time with 3 penalties. I was paired with others who warned me on where to hit or not hit the ball. Not a long course. Even from the tips, you can't hit driver every joke unless you are super precise on turning it where you want. I like that you need to think on some holes and there are a few risk/reward holes.
hi "jmatasic" Thank you for the great review. We are so glad you enjoyed your round with us today. Hope to see you again on your next visit from Tampa!
Enjoyable
It's an interesting course with very fast greens. The fescue bordering the fairways tends to swallow your ball, so best to stay in the fairway at all times. Some of the bunkers were under repair. My only complaint is that you have no warning of little creekbeds or doglegs that lie ahead out of sight and if it's your first time playing the course, you'll probably get snagged by these.
Hi "u00000697081" Thank you so much for the great feedback. The course can be difficult if this is your first time playing it. We are glad that you enjoyed your round with us and hope to see you again soon.
Very very slow play for a Wednesday.
The course was in good condition. The only issue is the pace of play was so very very slow. I played only 14 holes because they were players on the tee box waiting on a foresome on a par 3 taking there sweet time. And the next tee box players were waiting on players to tee off. Players were taking so long to hit , taking all day to putt. There was I Marshall no were on the course to speed up play. Very very unsat.
Hi "emhardin" We appreciate your honest review. We have been working on resolving our pace of play. A few of the issues result in the long rough as well as a few other things. As we work through these issues we hope that you will give us another try in the near future.
poor management
although the greens were a little beaten from all the ball marks that were not repaired, the course conditions were ok. They had mowed the rough and there was a layer of dead grass laying on top. If you hit your ball in there it was almost impossible to find it. The front nine was good and on the back we were held up by a 6 some and in front of them a 5 some. We called the pro and a ranger was sent out. He talked to them but nothing changed. After 45 minutes of playing just 2 holes, we left. We wont be back if that is the way they manage their course. Good luck to anyone playing this place!
Hi "don5845368" we apologize about your recent experience at the course today. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention and we will check with the starter on the reasoning for the 6 and 5 some groups. Over the last month we have been working on proper protocol in regards to our pace of play. These issues should be resolved over the next month. We hope that you will give us another try as we are working to resolve these issues.
Saturday rate
Course is in good shape for the middle of July. Definitely worth the money
Hi "adamlaf1" Thank you so much for the great review! Don't forget to book your labor day tee time with us this weekend.
Emerald Lake Golf Club
Can't believe I haven't written a review of ELGC, so here goes: I like Emerald Lake a lot. It is very convenient to get to, just off I-485 in SE Charlotte. It appears as if they have started construction on the new clubhouse to replace the one that burned down 4 years ago. The renderings look great, and I'm excited to see it come to fruition. The course itself winds it's way through a housing development. It is a par 72 that had its nines switched a few years ago. I think the switch was a great idea, as the old 18th was a bad finishing hole (I still don't think it is a well designed hole, regardless). The signature hole is probably the par 5 14th. It requires two separate carries of Mitchell's Lake. There are a fair mix of holes where you can hit driver, and others where you play for position. The holes where you can hit driver usually give you lots of room to do so. The course is currently is great condition. The bermuda on the fairways is lush and the rough is deep. There is an area in the 2nd fairway that is under repair, and also a strip running through the 3rd green where they have replaced sod. The greens themselves are great with one notable exception. People simply don't fix ball marks. I know this isn't the fault of the course, but nothing is worse than putting through a minefield of craters on a green. There is clean, white sand in all of the bunkers, and they are well maintained.
My one main knock on the course is pace of play continues to be an issue at ELGC. There were 2 groups ahead of me on the tee at my scheduled starting time. That theme continued throughout the round, as there were as many as 5 groups on one hole.
Regardless, ELGC is a great course to play a round of golf.
Hi "ccharles" We appreciate your honest review regarding the staff and and course conditions. It is a work in progress but we continue to work on the pace of play and ball marks on the greens. We appreciate you taking the time to review our course and hope to see you back in the near future.
Pace of play was ridiculous
Played as a single and it took me 2 hr and 40 mins. Never saw a ranger come through group ahead of me wouldn't let me play through. Quit after 9 holes because it would have taken me 6 hours to play the full 18. Course was in great shape and challenging. Staff was friendly at the club house. Will not go back.

Well Maintained Course
Not really a long course, but rough makes you hit it straight or it will be a long day. The greens were in great shape and fast.

Good Course but takes a while
I like this course it's always in decent shape it just takes so long to play because it's overbooked and there is no starter.. Every time I have played their Ive waited on every tee box.. Good course just make sure you have about 4.5 hours to play.

Emerald Lake is a jewel "in the rough" !!
Really enjoyed this course. First time played. Fairways were in good shape (except for longish rough). Greens really nice. Overall a really good experience with friendly staff and great weather. Will be back ! Be careful on 9th green. Had a 4 ft putt from above the hole. Barely touched it ! Ball never stopped rolling until 25 ft downhill ! I'll know better next time, Ha ! Off course amenities were rated less due to temporary golf shop and construction mess while they rebuild clubhouse. Gonna really be nice when done.

Mow the Grass More!
The mowing crew was out Monday morning, but if your ball went anywhere but in the fairway, it would disappear in the grass. My partner and I spent way too much time looking for balls a few feet off the fairway. You had to be right on top of the ball to see it. Clumps upon clumps of grass clippings old and new, dominated the scene. A real pain to play off the fairway.
Greens were in good shape and the course is likeable if the fees stay reasonable. I don't care if they have the best $4 hot dog around!
Mackfairway22,

Okay if you can't get a round anywhere else
The front nine is terrible compared to the back 9. You can't even get your tee in the ground on 60% of the tee boxes. I believe they had just punched the greens but they still rolled pretty well. I would just rather spend $10 extra bucks somewhere else.

Good time for Sure
After I was snubbed by Olde Sycamore (see my review), I went to Emerald Lakes. They got me on being a single and joined a twosome right away. The course is in really good shape right now. Greens are slightly fast and pretty smooth. Staff was friendly and cooperative. The new relocated clubhouse has broken ground and should be up in a few months. I recommend this course and it should only get better with the coming month's weather... Bunkers need a little more sand is the ONLY negative...
AlfyG3,
We are glad to hear that you had a good experience at Emerald Lake. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration as we are constantly trying to improve the conditions of our course. Hope to see you on the course again soon!
