Emerald Lake Golf Club
About
Emerald Lake Golf Club is one of the Charlotte area's most popular public courses. True to its name, water is a prominent feature on the golf course. It's not just the water hazards that make this a tough course though. You'll be faced with strategically placed bunkers, sloped greens, and fairways tightly lined with trees. The golf course starts out gentle enough but by the time you get to the third hole, you'll be tested with a hole that plays right into the prevailing wind. This long narrow par 4 is one of the toughest holes Emerald Lake Golf Club has to offer. You'll get a brief break with the fourth hole, but the following par 5 is the signature hole. This risk-reward hole could result in a birdie if you play it smart, but if you go for the green in two and don't make it, you might be punished with a bogey

My father came along for the ride , not a golfer but was very impressed with the beauty of this course Photo submitted by Jamie5277593 on 05/02/2013
Disappointed
First let me say I've been here several times. Most times it was a good experience. Today was different.
My twosome arrived to Hole 7 (par 3) and found a single waiting at the tee box and. Foursome on the green. There two holes ahead with no players.
Now my disappointment. I called the clubhouse to inform them of the slow play. They said they would send out a Marshall. One never came.
We teamed up with the single hoping it would help. We waited on every tee box the rest of the round. While waiting we noticed the foursome only had 3 bags. Two were sharing the same golf clubs.
By the time we were teeing off on 17 there were 6 groups on 15, 16 and 17.
All of this could have been fixed if a Marshall had come out and observed the slow group.
grear course
challenging course ,very demanding for amateur's. Loved the challenge good for my game.
Hi "cowboy51" Thanks for the excellent review! See you again in the near future.
Staff annoying
First we were accused of skipping from hole 2 to hike 10 and had to show the score card to prove it and was asked in not a good manner. Then with three holes to go we kept gettin rushed because they were out of carts and we were in perfect pace of play and was rushed 3 times in 3 holes. Your trying to play golf and get constantly annoyed. It's not our fault they were out of carts.
Hi " Robert6701471"we apologize about your recent experience at the course. We hope that you will give us another try in the near future. Thanks MGT
Very slow pace of play!!!
Seemed to me that they overbooked and it was backed up on every tee box. Never once saw a marshal to help the pace of play move along. Course wasn't very pleasant either!!
Hi "inchwrm75" We appreciate your patience during this time as our course was recently aerified, with the discounted aerification rates and warmer weather we have been pretty busy. We strive for a 4 hour 15 minute pace of play, we hope that you will give us another try in the near future. Thanks
Poor first impression
This was my first time playing the course. Arriving into a lovely neighbourhood, my hopes were sky-high to see this course. I was checked in with warm friendliness in the pro shop, quite different to the frosty person I spoke with on the phone just that morning. The starter, again, was a quality guy and I was feeling great as my round was about to start. However, it all went downhill from there. The teeboxes and fairways were in poor condition, and the greens were atrocious. Yes I was warned they had just been aerated, but to pay $20 to play on the worst greens I have ever happened across is a travesty. Pace of play was terrible too, with the round taking 4.5 hours to play, with substantial waiting on almost every shot.
I would like to give this course another try once the greens are back to a better state, which I hope does happen. I just hope that I am not disappointed if and when I return.
Hi "JamesCardGolf" We apologize about your recent experience at Emerald Lake GC we assure you that we only want the best experience for all of our guests. With Spring in the air the course does get pretty busy , and we strive for a 4 hour 15 minute pace of play which is average for most courses. We hope that you will give us another try when our greens have not been aerated. Thanks MGT
Terrible
Have played this course for 5 years. And each year it has gotten worse all around. This past experience was the tipping point. Tee boxes were awful, greens not up to par. When we made the turn there were three groups at the 10th hole they were sending off to start their round. Front nine took 1 hr 30 mins. Back nine almost 3 hours. Just awful.
Hi Timothy,
Thank you for coming out to play and providing your feedback. We are sorry to hear you were not pleased. We can assure you we are constantly working on maintaining the course and adjusting to the effects of weather. We hope you will return soon to give us another chance so you can experience a better pace of play and overall experience!
Always a fun time
Enjoyed the course. Came alone and was paired up with 2 other singles. Play was slow due to cart path only. Lots of rain recently, so my play was poor too. Course in good condition considering how wet and middle of winter. Greens roll true.
Hi "gregreeder' We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time. The course has had a lot of rain these past few months. Please come back and see us again in the Spring.
A Slow Slog
The course was wet so it was cart path only, which may have contributed to the slow play. Some holes - such as #9 - were so wet that balls in the fairway plugged too deep to find. Played lift, clean and place.
The greens are visually in very poor condition, but the speed of putts was surprisingly fast.
"Good morning Mr/Mrs Cavanaugh,
Thank you for your support of Emerald Lake Golf Club. The last few months have certainly been tough on the course as we have seen not only the wettest Winter in Charlotte history, but the snow and ice from last week really made the course soggy. Speaking of that snow and ice, when the greens have that much snow and ice sit on top of them for 5-6 days, they tend to get a little discolored. The good news is the discoloring does not effect the roll or health of the greens, which is why you still experienced the putting surfaces rolling smooth and quick.
As the Winter slowly gives way to Spring, we hope that the course will have a chance to dry out. We look forward to seeing you again!"
Great course to play
Staff very friendly course in good condition for December golf
Hi "blbailey4742" Thank you so much for the great review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the course conditions and our friendly staff.
Grew old waiting
Very slow round and never saw a ranger all afternoon. Local resident just walked on course with his 5 year old kid in front of us at the turn. No clue as to golf eitquette. Took 4 hours to play 12 holes on a Wedenesday. Left mid round and will not go back.
Hi "brock39" We are extremely sorry about your round on this particular day. We never allow locals to walk onto the course without paying or checking in first. We definitely agree that this is not proper golf etiquette. We are sorry we were not made aware of this situation, or we would of handled it properly. We would love to offer you a round on us so we can learn more about the situation that we were not aware of. If you could please email me directly at EmeraldLakeTeeTimes@Outlook.com. Thanks MGT
Beautiful course
The grass was dormant but it still was a beautiful golf course. Would definitely return if in the area.
Hi "u000006244254" Thank you so much for coming to visit us from Green Bay! We cannot wait for your return next year, thanks for the great review!
Good Value
Course was a little wet in areas but the greens are in good shape....fast! Overall it's a good course with challenging holes.
Hi "williamssci27" Thanks so much for the excellent review! We have received a lot of rain lately but the course is draining well. We are so glad that Emerald Lake gave you a challenge on this particular day.
Fun Round - decent course
Came out as a single but got paired up with a couple of guys that made the round very enjoyable. Got an amazing rate from Golf Now which was very NICE. As far as the course, I had played EL years ago and I remember the course being in a little better shape then. There were several spots under repair and the tee boxes need some definite work. I found the greens to be in pretty good shape - putts rolled consistently. Pace of play was excellent - played the round in 3:15. There is some challenge especially on the back 9, but it is not nearly as difficult as most of the courses in the area that I usually play. If you can get a hot deal from Golf Now, then it is certainly worth a go.
Hi "spearsie" Thank you so much for you review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your speedy round with us. Our course is definitely golfer friendly and a fun course to play. Thanks for coming out!
Good value
Good course, good condition, kinda slower play, but it was a beautiful day in mid November. Only thing this course needs is to work on their greens.
Hi "Art5117050" Thank you so much for coming out and playing Emerald Lake GC. We really appreciate your review and hope that you had an excellent time playing. We are definitely getting our Bent greens into tip top condition, please come back and visit us again soon!
Just ok
Several greens were in need of repair. Several holes are poorly designed (9,17 & 18) specifically. Grounds crew does not respect golfers on the course trying to play.
Hi "bankerbrown49" Thank you for making us aware of these situations on the course. We are currently working on some of the greens as the summer was extremely humid for them. We will also definitely talk to our maintenance crew to see if we can come to a understanding on being more respectful to golfers.
It has been in better shape
Last playef in late spring and early summer which were great, but this time around the greens were rock hard. No matter how good your approach chances were the ball was going through or coming off the front edge. Greens themselves were rough with lots of crab grass.
Fairways were good and tee boxes were so...so, some again rock hard.
Pace of play was slow.
Always enjoyed playing the course in the past, not so much this time
Hi "David4930350" Thank you for your review, with the unusual amount of humidity this summer the greens/tee boxes have not had time to breath. We are currently working quickly to resolve many of the issues. We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you out on the course soon. Thanks
Some greens in repair & Bunkers need some work
I've played Emerald Lake a number of times and really liked it, but this time around, I could tell that some work is being done to maintain it. First, it's obvious that some of the greens are starting to develop minor spouts crab grass. However, I could also tell that the groundskeeping staff had trimmed the greens short enough that the crab grass is not hindering the conditions on the greens. Indeed, I can confirm that my putts still rolled on the green without any issues. Repeat- there were NO ISSUES PUTTING. Other than being able to see the crab grass, the greens were in great shape for rolling the putts. On some greens, there were a series of 5-6 square patches along the endge of the greens about 4x4 inches in size that are filled with sand. I'm assuming that they parts are being removed so that they can be used as patch jobs for other locations, but I'm not sure. My approach shots to the green didn't hit these squares, but others may not be as lucky. My biggest complaint this time around was the bunkers. Most of them are not filled with the light, fluffy sand like the one on the back side of 18. Rather, they are filled with the red, claylike sand. Again, I could tell that the groundskeeping staff did their best to rake them and make them look as good as possible, but the sand was so compacted that hitting the shots out of the bunkers was more like hitting a short pitch shot rather than a traditional bunker shot. I still think Emerald Lake is one of the better public courses in the Charlotte area in terms of design, course condition, and value for he money. I will certainly go back in a few weeks. Hopefully, the minor issues will have been corrected by then.
Hi "mpscott44" Thank you for your review, we really appreciate you taking the time to discuss our course. We have had an unusual amount of humid weather this summer and the greens have had to deal with the issue. We are currently testing the greens ( which is why there are some square patches in some areas) to resolve the issue come this fall. We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you out of the course soon. Thanks
Wood local course
Play on Oct.7 at 2:00 course was in good shape after the rain. Some of the greens still in ruff shape from the summer. Play was a little slow from to many singles . to bad no beverage cart again.
Hi "mike10247mike" Thank you for your review. We appreciate you taking the time to review Emerald Lake.
Beautiful Golf Day
Very nice golf course, Some nice scenic holes, beautiful homes around the course and in pretty good shape. The greens had some issues but, otherwise in good shape. We will play it again sometime, when we are back in Charlotte.
Hi "Charlesjr" Thanks for great review! Emerald Lake is a very scenic and unique golf course. The homes and layout really making this course appealing. Please come back and see us again when you are back in town from Hilton Head.
Good potential
For the price the course wasn't bad but what was disappointing were the rock hard tee boxes and the greens were unplayable maybe the greens will be much better after aeration however there is no excuse for the tee boxes to be so hard that you can't place a tee in the ground to hit your driver. Not all holes were this way but there were enough for a player to become a bit frustrated.
Good afternoon - u194887612
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback regarding your experience at Emerald Lake Golf Club. Aerification is certainly one of those necessary evils that we reluctantly perform a few times each year, but each time the greens come back happier and healthier, and this Fall will be no different. The putting surfaces made it through the tough Summer in great shape, and we are extremely excited about the shape they will be in this Fall. As far as the tee boxes go, we did build 3 completely, brand new, tee boxes last Spring. Those 3 tee boxes will take some time to settle in, which can make them firmer than the rest. We are aerifying these tee boxes roughly every three weeks to keep them loose, and will continue to do throughout the Fall.
We would love for you to email us EmeraldLakeTeeTimes@Outlook.com as we do not want our guests to leave our course frustrated.
Thank you again for your feedback and support of Emerald Lake and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Hi "Doug3008077" We apologize for your recent experience at Emerald Lake GC. We appreciate your feedback on this particular day and we will definitely look into this situation.
