Not worth the drive or the cost.
I would not recommend this golf course. The fact that the driving range is a 15-20 min golf cart ride through the woods with poor directions from staff. The golf course is laid out in very open space, and at least ten golfer’s balls landed on the fairway, green or tee box which makes it a distraction for yourself and others. This is especially a safety concern. Lastly the racist golf club member/customer while playing made the day even worse.
Nice greens
Some of best greens around… receptive and rolled true
Well maintained course
Fairways and roughs improving from winter conditions. Sand traps still hard packed. Greens rolled true, were medium fast speed, and some held the approach shot. Made for a challenging round.
Ya get what ya get
Played as a single and joined up with 3 guys who all knew one another. Good guys but not so good at golf.
Checked in with a wonderful group of staff members and was directed to the range for a little warmup. It’s a hike, so make sure you get a cart and buy tokens in the pro shop.
Range is functional, nothing more.
Front nine is a Donald Ross design and there are a few brushstrokes still remaining. Everything is right in front of you after the first tee ball. After that, nothing crazy, fairways and greens, exterior OB and no water or forced carries until #9, a long-ish par 3
The back 9 has a little more personality with similar DR style greens; not as aggressive runoffs though.
All in all, a good course for a casual round with your buddies.
Proshop had a nice selection of shirts, shoes and golf balls plus a couple of unique items.
Forgiving off the tee; shows its teeth around the greens
Course conditions are good. Greens are lightning fast but are in great condition. Fun course overall. Bring your A-game with the putter and wedges.
Got paired up with two other golfers and one was walking
Had 5 and 6 people playing in front of us slowing play down
A Tale of 2 Courses
Monroe CC is two different designs. The front nine is a Donald Ross design and plays shorter than the back. The turtleback greens are deadly, especially when the greenskeeper seemingly has a bad day and places the pins close to the edges. The placements today seemed to be deliberately impossible, where slight misses roll completely off the green and down the hill, especially on greens that slope front to back then drop off. The back nine is a more traditional layout and has normal greens. 18 is a long par 5 that average golfers are lucky to reach in 3. The fairways were dormant today but the greens were in excellent condition despite the front nine's placements. I do enjoy the course, but would play more often if the pin placements on the front nine could be more reasonably placed.
Great course for the money
Staff is always great, course is very well maintained and it’s great place to play.
Average golfer
Pace of play was four hours not stop at turn for food or drinks. Conditions were terrible even for fall lost two balls if fairway, rough was soggy with balls plugging and no rain for days but the worse part is the leaves are everywhere and no work crews trying to pick them up. Lost another five balls to leaves. Not a course to play in fall a cheaper and better option is Edgewater in Lancaster,Sc
