Greens

Overall, still one of my favorite courses in the area. However, the greens that used to be able to be described as "fast, but fair" are now almost comical. It's nearly impossible to keep an approach shot on the green unless you know how to spin the ball like a pro. Got a chip shot from 10 yards away? Your only chance of keeping it on the green is to spike it into the bank in front of the green and let it roll on, and pray that it actually stays.

The course layout is challenging, with a traditional front nine designed by Donald Ross and a more scenic back nine by Tom Jackson. Significant slope on many of the greens makes putting quite difficult on certain holes. As first timers at this course we did not find the clubhouse staff very friendly, but the starter was quite engaging and provided a lot of useful information about the course. It had rained several days before so the cart-path only rule was in place, but the fairways seemed dry enough and this did not seem necessary. Overall an enjoyable round of golf.

The tale of two courses

This course is really two different courses

The front 9 (Donald Ross design) has open fairways but small undulating very challenging greens. The greens are extremely fast but roll very true. Missing a putt though can leave you farther than when the original putt.

The back 9 has tighter fairways but larger more forgiving greens.

The course is a lot of fun and pretty challenging.

A Gem

This is a course I would love to make as my home course. The Donald Ross front nine layout is fantastic, with its small speedy undulating greens. It’s challenging but fair. Same for the back nine.

I was fortunate enough to play with an employee who went out of his way to not only help me navigate the course but he also filled me in on the unique history of the place.

Looking forward to my next trip to NC to play it again.

Great Course

Great Course with each 9 holes designed by a different designer so it feels like you are playing two courses. Highly Recommend for the price!
