A gem of a course
Sanford Golf Club, an old Donald Ross course, provides everything you would expect from a Ross design; little trouble from tee to green, but very tricky once you get there. The greens are tiny and very subtly contoured. It's a challenge and a real joy to play. And the rates are unbelievably low. This course is one of my favorites now and I'll go back often.
A Donlad Ross Muni from the 1930s (Could be Better)
I have played SMGC for a number of years as well as many of my friends. This course is a good example of the Donald Ross design which made the man a legend in golf course design history. Although, due to some water issues, the back nine was re-routed a number of years back but still the course flows as Ross would have envisioned.
The Greens staff, under the supervision of Keith, keeps this facility in tip top condition throughout the entire year. The practice facility although very good in most areas could use some attention, mostly the culling of old balls and a re-shaping of the driving range but the City "Elders" do not consider that any type of priority.
David, Brandon, Jade and Jon, all the staff are super and treat every patron as a member. Their attention to detailed personalization of every player's round could and should be emulated by the city council members.
The Clubhouse, although spectacular in its structure, is in need of reconditioning and updating and is under utilized because of the run down condition.
This is a fine golf course and the only draw back is the lack of appreciation the city government has shown to the golf community. This area is the beginning of the world renown Sandhills of North Carolina, the birthplace of golf in North America.
Want a good value for your dollar and play a Donald Ross Design that is as close to original concept without paying Pinehurst prices; this is the course for you!
Solid Municipal Course
Played here a few times over the years, and this is the best condition I have seen the course in several years. Classic Ross type design with some challenging holes, but fair to most golfers. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The only complaint I have at all is that I came on a senior tournament day, so the pace wasn't that fast. Otherwise an enjoyable round at a well designed and maintained municipal golf course.
