Southern Pines Golf Club

About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Not worth the time or money
Very disappointed in this course. Thought it more upscale than it was. From the minute we pulled into the parking lot it looked a bit run down. The only positive thing we can say is that Carrie in the pro shop was very nice. Course in terrible condition - greens burned out around the edges and tough to find grass in many fairways. The pace of play was horrendous and when we asked about the 5-comes on the course we were told that was normal. Starter was not friendly and almost rude. Halfway house closed early. We could not wait for this round to end and will never go back unless things change dramatically. Luckily we had a better day at our next course the following day.
Mixed
The fairways and greens were great, a couple muddy spots. The range, rough and cart paths are in need of much improvement. Lots of deep ruts and broken concrete. Could be a great course with some serious care. The staff members were very friendly and helpful.
Conditions of a Beauitful Donald Ross track
First of all the greens were beauitiful. The rest of the course was sickening. Very disappionted.
Very enjoyable. Great layout.
This course is a Donald Ross gem. Rolling hills of piney woods. Greens run true. Fairways and tees were nice. Friendly staff. Carts paths are broken up in places.
This is a great course to play.
Love this course
One of the best deals in the Pinehurst area. Conditions are great. Will definitely be back.
TLC
The course itself is wonderful. The greens and fairways are fine.
However, the cart paths will rattle your bones and almost damage carts. Concrete is broken up so bad on many cart paths. The exits from tee boxes on cart paths and entrances to greens on cart paths would be my number one TLC project to make this a more enjoyable tract to experience.
#17 has underground wires exposed on the ground on the left side of the fairway. The railroad ties from the driving range steps to the steps to many tee boxes are worn out and need replacing.
Very Disappointing
Southern Pines has one of the very best layouts in the area with great elevation changes and strong variety of holes. Unfortunately the course conditions are not good. The fairways were decent and the greens good, but the rest of the course is not being well maintained. The rough was sparse with way too many washed out areas. The tees on the front had not been mowed. The bunkers were essentially sandless with significant damage to the faces. For the cost there are many better options to play.
Inflated price
I bought a tee time through Golf Now for $69. I get to the course and the rates are $51. Since the rain was coming in the afternoon I requested our group to tee off early. There was nobody else on the tee! To do so I had to pay another $51! I am very disappointed in GolfNow and with Southern Pines golf course. Complete rip-off.
Still love it
Second time playing this course and it was even better! Fairways and greens in great shape. Fabulous course for the price we paid!
Great Course, beautiful views
Had a great round here. Had played this course many years ago when the kids were younger and it was still as great as we remembered. Very scenic and peaceful. Great track, excellent layout, lots of challenging holes but very fair and fun. Highly recommend this gem
Not what I expected
Pace of play was good but I expected more when the hot deal was almost $80. This is my 3rd round this week and was by far the third best course.
Pure joy playing the course
Was alot of fun ...generous fairways in width and roll. Greens tough and undulating. Never could get the break right. Beautiful layout.
