Southern Pines Golf Club

About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Great Course, Great Value
Our group of 10 mid-handicap golfers played Southern Pines for the first time this year. I was a little concerned when booking it for our annual outing, due to the past financial and ownership problems. We've enjoyed Legacy, so we took the plunge when we heard they took over management of Southern Pines.
Suffice it to say that we were extremely pleased. The clubhouse and neighborhood are nothing special, but the course is in great shape. It's a unique opportunity to play a Donald Ross course for under $100 in peak season. Fairways and greens were in great shape. Holes are mostly straightforward until you try to land a shot close to the pin and watch it roll away. The par-3s are probably the hardest holes on the course, though they are not super long. I'd definitely recommend Southern Pines be part of your rotation when you come to the area.
A gem
A bit of bias as this is one of my all time favorites.
Low condition ranking due to time of year and poor spring.
I make sure I play this course when I vacation in the Sandhills. I have played this course at least ten times over the last decade.
The facilities are in very poor condition but you don’t play golf in the clubhouse.
The greens are perfect the rest of the course needs some more sun and heat to grow in
The course is a Donald Ross and while the greens have been altered over the years you still get a sense of the design,.
Each hole is a classic and a real joy to play
If you are a decent golfer play the the blue tees.
It’s a North Carolina Classic
Old but new
This is a grand old course. Wow. In its day how grand. Today some work is need on cart paths and finish on rough but I can just imagine how grand this place has been over the last 119 yrs. it is kind of magical and my wife and I just loved the layout. The staff was terrific. Starter G was a marvel. We will be back.
Great Donald Ross Course!
Good day at the course! The only negative is that it was a busy Easter Saturday and they scheduled 2 walkers in the middle of the day. Everyone behind had to wait almost every hole, although they were good golfers. This should not happen on a busy Saturday!
Could Be Nice
This course could be so nice if some money was put into it. Just run down, course, clubhouse, parking lot.
It was o.k. to play. greens were still recovering from aeration but not bad. Could be a really nice donald ross course. Has the bones of a big, beefy, monster but needs water, fertilizer, mowers, and staff to work on the details.
A great old Donald Ross classic - hidden gem!
And to think this golf course almost went under 10-12 years ago! This is a great golf course and one of my favorite courses anywhere, and I've played a lot of great courses. We play it every time we come to the Pinehurst area and you shouldn't miss it either. It's one of the most demanding 6100 yard courses (tips are longer) that you will ever play. The green complexes are just wonderful and demand excellent short play - not unfair but beautifully designed. One of Donald Ross's early golf courses - 1906. Course was in good shape and with a 15 mph wind it was a brute that day. Greens were fast and smooth. Fairways were generous but as typical with a Ross course it demands an excellent short game. This is no pushover. Don't miss it!
could become a favorite
It had been 13 years since I last played here, on my first trip through Pinehurst. I had fond memories of the course, got a Hot Deal, and enjoyed the day. I hadn't played since August, so the generous fairways were welcome. The greens are small and undulating. lots of elevation change, plenty of elevated greens. I enjoy Donald Ross courses and this fit the bill.
Worth a play
Southern Pines is a nice traditional Donald Ross course. The non-essential parts of the course could use some TLC but the important parts (i.e. greens, tees, bunkers and fairways) were well maintained for this time of year in NC. The green were smooth with decent pace. Overseeded fairways were good. Bunkers were well kept and, from what I saw, consistent. It looks like they apply their limited budget in the right places.
Pace of play was a little disappointing, but it is a nice little course and it was the first decent weather we've had in a while so there was a lot of traffic on the course.
The $40ish off-season rate is an okay value for the area making is an acceptable option for occasional play.
Classic Donald Ross Design
Easy on the eyes. Fair but challenging. Green complexes classic. Don’t get above the hole. Brand new carts. Best deal around. Will be back.
Well kept
For the season and weather the course was pretty well kept. Only down fall is their rough cart paths.
Old gem
I still love the historic feel of the course. Some of the amenities need attention, but I'm there to play a Ross classic. Greens are speedy. Don't get above the hole, or you're playing defense.
Always Prefect
We have played Southern Pines GC a number of times and always book it on our trips to Pinehurst. Great greens and course conditions and a friendly staff and grill room made for a Perfect day!
Another Ross Gem
Don’t miss this one! Course is in really good shape. Quick and undulating greens with elevation changes to fairway make for a good test. Enjoyable round and friendly staff.
