Southern Pines Golf Club
About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Another Ross Gem
Don’t miss this one! Course is in really good shape. Quick and undulating greens with elevation changes to fairway make for a good test. Enjoyable round and friendly staff.
Dated and needs some TLC
One of those course that needs an infusion of cash to restore to a true gem. Course is good but cart paths, tee areas, other infrastructure needs to be updated.
I had a great round but it’s a shame the course is so dated.
A great old golf course don't miss it!
I play Southern Pines every time we go to Pinehurst. One of Donald Ross's oldest course designs and the original layout appears to have hardly changed at all over the years. A real classic and a blast to play. Great greens, great conditions on a perfect day weather-wise. It doesn't get much better than that.
Great elevations
The course was in good condition despite the rain. Some bunkers had been damaged but were playable.
Lots of elevation, water and bunkers. The only draw back was that there was no person to greet us at the bag drop.
Course really aging over past 5 years
This classic course is not being maintained in cart paths and waste areas. The greens are excellent.
Great Golf Course
Golf Course is great, awesome layout and in good condition. Greens are some of the best around.
Amenities need work: clubhouse is rundown, no restaurant and no snack bar available (should have let us know to buy drinks now at the pro shop - very thirsty by the end).
Like playing in the ruins of an old temple
From reading past reviews this course apparently was bankrupt and shut down just a few weeks ago and has since reopened. That makes perfect sense.
It felt like a course that had its heyday a few decades ago and is now limping along, hoping for new life.
But it's a lovely Ross track! Subtle, fast and pure greens. Requires different shots. Generous off the tee with but then hitting into narrow sloping greens. Many elevated approach shots. The fairways weren't in beautiful shape but were playable.
I played alone and only saw two other groups. Got done in about 2 hour and paid $50 (with booking fees). A bit overpriced for the area but not exorbitant. No clubhouse amenities but the skeleton crew was friendly enough.
Worth trying. The greens were a pleasure to read and putt.
Great course
Course was recently taken over by Elk's Club, and managed by Legacy staff. Results are excellent for golfers, fast greens, good management and new carts. Best thing to happen to Southern Pines in Years. Greens on this course are some of the best in Pinehurst, predictable yet tricky. Every hole is different, a real Donald Ross masterpiece.
Course went bankrupt/ closed
Got there to find course closed it went bankrupt. Please refund the 9 dollar service charge gold now charged my credit card.
How can this place have good reviews?
they were shutting down the club house as we got there. The lady was at least kind enough to give me chips and a Gatorade since no food was available. I rarely review courses. Only if it's really good or really bad. This course was really bad. The conditions were awful. Sure it was a peach at one point with such a great layout. I would not recommend this course to anyone. Too Many other in the area.
Donald Ross roles over in his grave.
No water on course. Snack bar was open at tenth hole. Our group needed 3 carts replaced during mid morning playing first 9. All 8 carts needed recharged to play a 3rd 9. Third 9 was 10 to 15 dollars more than other high quality courses we played but price was negotiated down. No toilet paper 3 stalls one out of order. Layout of the course was excellent but most of it needed manicured better. Sand traps hard pan and neeed groomed. A lot of this is constructive criticism base on working at a golf for a few years. Not recommended. 8 handicap and 70. The older I get the better I was!!
Hidden gem
If you for a second, close your eyes when you are about 100 yards to any of the 18 holes, you may think you are playing an U.S. Open course.
To me, the layout looks better than Ross' other course besides Pinehurst No. 2 -- and that is Pine Needles.
Southern Pines still can claim the course plays exactly the way Ross intended it to play.
Public course now -- not sure how long it will. E though
Fathers Day Golf
No water on course in the summer June heat. Even the clubhouse water fountains were not working. Lounge closed by 5 so no beer was available either.
Poorly kept greens, dry and patchy was the norm.
Put this course on your list
No real complaints. Well maintained. No particularly attractive landscaping. Reasonable but interesting course to play
Greens were in great shape and excellent to putt on. Glad they added an extra set of forward tees. Made a long course easier to play especially since this course plays longer than listed on the scorecard. Fairways could use some work. Overall a good course. Think there rates are a bit high, although we got ours on golf now.
Great Donald Ross Layout, however
What a beautiful old style classic Donald Ross layout, a must see for DR fans, however the conditions of the course do not warrant the regular prices. The 3 holes around the clubhouse are clearly much more manicured than the other 15 holes on the course, the old draw the customer in shell trick. Fortunate to have booked a fair 55 rate. Anything over that stay away. Wasn't awful conditions, just wasn't what 1 would expect for 80 to 100 course.
