A rare wide open day at Santa Anita
Well, I lucked out this time. Usually Santa Anita is a very busy facility much like Brookside or Encino/Balboa. It was a Monday and that is usually one of the days you can find Santa Anita open. It was wide open.
The greens were punched but that is no biggie to me. I am a pretty good putter, so tee to green is really what I work on the most. I had a pretty good day. 82 from the back. Although, punched greens make birdie putts pretty unlikely to go in.
I am a local for this course so it was nice to play it. I don't play it as often as I might because of the normal crowds. Santa Anita can be tough because it always seems like the ball is above or below your feet. It's an old course. Fairly generous off the tee, but as with any course, you have to hit the ball !!
An old favorite
While there's some thin grass on a lot of the course (no doubt due to drought) the greens are in very good shape.
Good Round - Record time
It can happen: 12:30PM, on a Saturday, as a 3-some, finished in 3 hours, 10 minutes. also stopped at the turn to order refreshments.
No one in front of us , ever, the whole time. Or behind us.
Good job, Santa Anita- I will return.
Second Time Around Noticeable Issues
Played today which is my second time on this course. Thought I'd make some comments since these things should be corrected. First of all, management needs to tell the guy in the pro shop to stop taking balls out of the warm up bucket in front of customers either give them less balls already set up or quit this practice it's highly regarded as a cheap thing to do especially if you want more loyal golfers it's a matter of principal. Second the condition of the course is very poor and golfers should be advised of this when making tee times example due to water restrictions our rough and fairways are in less than playable conditions. This or offer a deeper discount. Carts need upgrading.
Sunday Golf
This course was hard as a rock. Fairways were cut and groomed but were like hitting off cement. We did the twilight at 3:35 and it took us nearly 2 hours to play four holes. Over booked tee times. Slow as molasses play and no Marshall.
slow bumpy greens
Slow greens and slow play; although the layout of the course is fairly interesting, with plenty of mature trees. Expect to be waiting on every tee shot (back up of two groups on par 3's, no one was waving up) I bought the tee time online and it came with a "warm-up" bucket of balls... when I showed up to sign in, the guy in the pro shop handed me a small bucket, but not before actually removing a half dozen balls from it first.... ?? I mean, really? wow, how stingy can one be?
Saturday
Decent course and conditions. Dry areas due to drought. 4&1/2 hours w/ 8:45 start. Waiting on every tee box
Very simple golf
The basic golf course. What you expect. Nice. But nothing extravagant. Better than the par 70 short courses like alhambra. This satiates the golf itch. For a day. The price makes it nice.
Slowest greens complimented by cow grazing fairways
Carts are old, really old with no GPS. Fairways are the worst of any course i have played - i mean dirt and grassless patches throughout.
The greens don't roll, as if they have never been cut. No water features or other aspects that makes playing in 100 degree fun.
will never play again here.
Typical County Course
Typical LA county course here... Funky tee boxes with all kinds of grass. Inconsistent greens. Nice bunkers though, but would be nice if people raked them... Pretty fun course great mix of long and short holes, but the course just does not fit my eye... I prefer more narrow courses. Had a great time, but would not recommend it to a friend.
Fun Course
I played Santa Anita for the first time and I was very pleased with the conditions of the course. The fairways were well kept, the sand traps were very well maintained and the greens were rolling nicely.
Over played
I like this course set up and it is close to where I live, the only reason that I do tend to play here. The starters are not very friendly and the course is in decent shape. The greens were running slow though, probably due to the drought like most courses are doing. And it's time for them to update their carts!!
Over-crowded and Slow Pace of Play
I showed up as a single on a Sunday afternoon and was paired up with 4 other golfers to form a 5-some, yes, a 5-some. I booked a 3:22 pm tee time hoping it wouldn't be as crowded but it was really crowded. Our pace of play was really slow not much fun. After 7 holes and 2.5 hours I called it a day. I won't be coming back.
Great Condition
Greens were in excellent condition,
Staff was very helpful, and pace was great. Love this course.
This course was better than I hoped, for a last minute!
As with any course you are only as fast as those ahead of you. The group in front of us were fast enough except when the guy drove back asking if we saw his putter. Then said he must have left it at a different hole. So I suppose he must have been chipping his putts in the hole. LOL.
The course all in all took us 5 hours to complete because of pace of stack of groups.
But the course was nice. Great view of mountains.
Also seams to be a big senior course, looked like all of AARP was there our morning of play.
Early summer golf
The starter was very friendly. I think all starters should be that good.
The course is fine in an early summer days.
See you next time!!!
Traditional Old Course
Have always enjoyed playing Santa Anita I happen to pick the perfect day to play. Course was in great shape, fairways, greens, pace of play was Excellent.
Enjoyable to Play!
Always enjoyable to play here. Sometimes plays a bit slow but overall very pleasant.
fun county course
ok i will start with the carts first they are OLD not to nitpick but these were really kinda raggedy. ok got that off my chest, the course was in great shape overall; the greens are usually in good shape here and they were again sunday. the fairways were in good shape no big bare spots the rough was decent always a good experience here they keep the course up very well no complaints about the course. now the pace; we finished in a little over 4 hours but it coulda been/shoulda been alot faster i dont understand why the first group of the day is a fivesome walking? we caught them at the third hole and waited every hole after that, if you wanna go for a walk find a park! or play fast!
No rounded holes
Normally this golf course plays well with its condition. However, recently the Greens Superintendent lost sight on what a round cut hole should look like on a green. It would appear the Greens Superintendent is forgetting to move the holes and is allowing grass to grow around the role and as a result reducing its size and shape. The marshals on this course are unheard of. And, if you happen to see one, they won’t tell anyone that their playing too slow. During their prime time, guarantee five hour round due to their lack of supervising. While Santa Anita refuses to offer deals during their off time, you can play Brookside Golf course for $13.00 after 3:30 and their listed in GolfNow for savings on any time, not Santa Anita.
