About
Sterling Hills Golf Club sprawls across acres of lush countryside surrounded by avocado groves and citrus orchards. The layout winds through the verdant hills between Oxnard and Ventura. The club opened in 1999 as the only public golf course in Ventura County. The layout is player-friendly enough for beginners to still feel comfortable but it also packs a considerable amount of challenges. The versatile layout balances areas of wide-openness with target-style golf. There is contoured mounding along the fairways and some interesting elevation changes. Thanks to the hilly terrain, there is hardly a flat lie to be found. Although Sterling Hills is still relatively young, there are some mature eucalyptus trees throughout. Golfers can warm-up on the driving range, chipping area, or putting green before the game since a bucket of range balls is included with the round.

What happened to Sterling Hills
We have been playing this course since we moved to Camarillo 12 years ago. Never found the fairways in such poor condition. Unfortunately we won’t be coming back. It was such a great course until now

The course was short but tough.
The championship tees are not that far back. However the tees were decent and the fairways were well kept. The rough was punishing but not round ending. Greens were slow but you still had to pay attention to the breaks.

Not worth the Trip
This course has the bones to be such a great in shape track but 0 effort from staff to actually make it so. Over grown on shrubbery. Around every green. Absolutely 0 effort of course beautifications. Staff was unfriendly and Uni inviting. Putting green was a joke. Food and beverage area looked dirty and sticky. I will not be playing here again unless it’s free.

Awful Experience
Course I’m mediocre to bad condition . Stacked up TT with no one helping pace of play. So awful an experience I left after 9.

Improved conditions
I hadn’t played this course in over a year. I was pleasantly surprised that the course conditions, especially the fairways, were much improved since the last time I played here. The greens had been aerated 2 weeks before I played here, so it was hard to judge the greens, though they looked like they were coming along nicely and will be in great shape in another 2 weeks.

Staff members are rude
Receptionist was so rude and wouldn’t let me use my gift card that I had so I had to pay 220$ out of my own pocket all bc he wouldn’t take the time to use my gift card. This place sucks I feel treated differently bc I don’t have the fancy stuff

Ran out of carts

Course was in ok shape considering a long wet winter. Would expect it to get in better shape as spring continues along.

Doesn’t disappoint.
I’ve I’ve always found it in good shape. It’s challenging but fair. It’s not punishing like some courses. Staff is great. Starter is on top of it. No straggling to first tee. Food was excellent.

One of the best
The course is probably the best in the county since the rains. Drainage is excellent. Almost no muddy patches. A great track in all conditions. Nice vistas everywhere.

I play once a week at sterling Hills. I like the course.
1 most of the traps are dirt with rocks
2 tee boxes are not always flat
3 more expensive than surrounding courses
The course has greatly improved in the last four years it’s close to my house. That’s why I plant once a week. Other courses in the area are about $10-$20 cheaper and I also play other ones occasionally too.

Course in need of maintenance
How this great course is dying. Tee boxes are a mess with divots and bare spots. Fairways have numerous divots and several types of grasses. Rough is weeds or bare areas. Traps are hard pan and not maintained. Greens are the only bright spot, some divots but putts well. Hopefully the management will invest in the course as they did in the banquet room and pro shop.

Don't expect a good pace of play
I play here normally four day a week, and the number of 5-hour rounds is growing. It's up to about 2 per week, weekends excluded (I play primarily on weekdays). It's rare that you finish in four hours or less now. The course keeps booking groups and not policing their pace of play. They have marshalls but all they do is look for foursomes that are falling behind. If the entire group is on a five-hour pace, they say nothing. When you say something about it, all you get in return is "it is what it is". When I play at other area courses I'm always done in four hours or less. If group billing was scaled so the longer you take, the more you pay, the groups would start policing themselves.
