Sterling Hills Golf Club
About
Sterling Hills Golf Club sprawls across acres of lush countryside surrounded by avocado groves and citrus orchards. The layout winds through the verdant hills between Oxnard and Ventura. The club opened in 1999 as the only public golf course in Ventura County. The layout is player-friendly enough for beginners to still feel comfortable but it also packs a considerable amount of challenges. The versatile layout balances areas of wide-openness with target-style golf. There is contoured mounding along the fairways and some interesting elevation changes. Thanks to the hilly terrain, there is hardly a flat lie to be found. Although Sterling Hills is still relatively young, there are some mature eucalyptus trees throughout. Golfers can warm-up on the driving range, chipping area, or putting green before the game since a bucket of range balls is included with the round.

Happy to play
Nice layout, still wet from rains.greens rolled true.
It’s back.
I love this course. One of the best designs around, anywhere. Challenging but fair, and visually interesting and stimulating and has awesome twisty hole designs of many varieties, up and down and around the hills. If you can hit it well, then it’s not that hard, but most people complain about the place because it can be difficult if you’re not a mid to low handicap.
The course is in much better shape than it was during the last few years of drought!! I’m glad the course is almost back to how it should be. Grass is growing in all the right areas that needed it. Obviously the owners are working hard to take care of the place.
With the rains the course should be in even better shape for the next couple months!! Grass is growing well on the tee boxes and all the fairway and rough areas that need it. Obviously there are areas that have been purposefully designed to be dead areas with either dirt or wood chips, and the point is avoid them. I didn’t hit any of those areas but my playing partners did, but they had no problems, that’s how it’s designed..
Greens were a bit moist today, so they didn’t roll as quick I would have liked or have seen in the past at this course, but nothing major to moan about, as many places are still trying to dry out from the few days of seriously heavy rains we had.
I’m just happy that the course is coming back to how it’s supposed to be. May the course stay forever.
I’ll be back.
We appreciate you leaving a review and rating us. We will inform the entire team, so they know their hard work is paying off. We look forward to having you back at Sterling Hills Golf Club!
Diamond in the rough
Starting off with a nice and friendly staff, well manicured driving range, nice golf carts and a very nice very well-maintained course in a wonderful location. Looking forward to returning
Hello and thank you for your 5-star rating! We're delighted you enjoyed your round. Please book another round with us soon, and thanks for choosing Sterling Hills Golf Club!
Not the best experience
Booked a tee time for 12:24 thorough golf now, when I arrived they said my tee time wasn’t in their system. Gave us another tee time for 1:24, but we didn’t end up playing till after 2. Not sure why our tee time didn’t go through, but the staff members were friendly.
The course was also behind do to frost. Very busy and unorganized..
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the teams in charge so they can work to make changes. Your feedback helps us do better. Course is challenging but lots of fun. We had a great time and look forward to coming back.
It's a public course
. We used to play there once a week, but for some particular reason we can't get tee times any longer. We call seven days ahead of time early morning and all the tee times are taking up. At least the morning tee times
Nice course, no available tee times
It's good course, challenging, fairly well taken care of. The only problem is trying to get a tee time. I will try to get a tee time seven days in advance as specified and any time regardless of what time of day they are non-existent.
Fun course but to expensive for Seniors
I no longer play here since they got rid of Senior Rates. There are other courses that still respect the cost tp Seniors. I had a group that would play there but we no longer play there. I play at least 2 times a week.
It was raining from 10 min after I started, but otherwise a nice open course!
I will definitely come back to play when the weather is better. It was raining from the second T all the way to 18th. I like the course, but It was a bummer to get all this rain this day!

Hello. We would love to hear more about your 4-star experience on our course. Please tell us what we can do to earn that last star, and thanks for golfing at Sterling Hills Golf Club!
Great track
I played Sterling several times in the past year. I always enjoy playing this course because I believe it has something for everyone including I handicappers and low handicappers. Pace of play can sometimes be an issue but they have marshals out there to keep it moving Most of the time. I think the meal ticket is a little added something as well.
Thanks so much for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed your round at Sterling Hills Golf Club. That's what we like to hear! We hope to see you again soon!
A dump
Hard to find positives (aside from the course layout)
The fairways are either bald or muddy
Tee boxes unattended; staff illiterate; carts that are in shameful condition... fully expect this place to close. It's about as bad as Camarillo Springs.
That's why rates are so low...NOBODY would come here to play
Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve and are working diligently to improve the course. Thank you for playing and we hope to see you again soon.
very frustrating experience due to poor course/pace/staff management
Wanted to share a very poor experience we had this past weekend Dec of 2021 at Sterling Hills. This place has all the auspicious signs of being a decent place outside LA for the money, however the management left us with such a poor taste in our mouths I will never return. By our third hole we noticed a group of 6 in front of us that had clearly been drinking before arriving to the course and were also quite obviously two groups of 3 that had combined into one giant group. We were getting held up so badly that three separate times between holes 4 and 12, the "marshal" had to go tell the guys to split up to keep pace four separate times. He kind of laughed it off the first time he discussed with us around hole #4, gave a shrug and said "sorry guys i keep telling them to split but they've been drinking, and they're not really any good at the game so they keep spending time taking provisionals, not sure what to tell ya! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
What is the point at ALL in having a marshal if that's how it's going to be? The way I was raised is that if you break the rules more than twice you're out. And this place is supposed to loosely be a "country club"? The whole situation was made worse by the fact that for 6 guys, they had 3 or 4 carts and one guy was WALKING which was just a joke. They left beers and balls on the greens etc.
Anyway we were trying to finish up and politely trying to prod the cattle about hole 15/16, and we had one shot behind them that came a little closer than you'd want it to, and they went way overboard, started screaming at us threatening to come back and beat us, even despite our efforts to say yell saying sorry and keep them moving forward.
We called the Pro Shop(for the third or fourth time now, mind you) but this time to say that they were threatening us. They tried to deflect and tell us to just play through them or move up to #18 now and then go back for the last three. Not acceptable considering the course was full?!
Eventually some headmaster of the pro shop came out and talked to them and when he came to us about it, he did not give one iota of a care that one of their patrons had threatened us with violence... again, the way I was raised, that might be fine in a bar, but that's not acceptable on a golf course. We were comparatively 100% sober and while he clocked that we were not the problem children, he just said he'd forced them to split up again and that we should be fine. Call me a curmudgeon but no efforts were made to make us feel better about the situation, no offers were made to come back and play another time since these guys prevented us from finishing on time before dark, or even a discounted round.
All they had to do was offer 50% of the next round or literally anything. It's about the lack of customer service and care in handling a really frustrating situation that will prevent me from coming back. I attached one photo of the group in question and another of what we felt like we were dealing with. Will spend my money at Sand Canyon over this place going forward, much better run operation where they actually seem to care what you think of the place when you leave.

Management working to make coarse nice. Could use a marshal to keep play going. Also would be nice to have a gate to the 10th hole, to speed up play and don't have to walk thru watery tunnel. Overall I would give it 4 stars.
