Good course for the price
Played it today and the course was in very good shape, for a military golf course. Folks are saying the greens were aerated recently. Yes, but I thought they were fine today. I've played Woodlawn course at Belvoir and I much more prefer Gunston. Last time I played Woodlawn (spring 2017) it was in real bad shape. Today, the fairways and the greens were in good shape. One negative was the hard-as-a-rock tee boxes. Not all, but several were so compact it was hard to push a tee into the ground. When you come here, give yourself extra time to get through security if you don't have a DOD ID. This course welcomes the non-military public and it's a very good price even as a visitor. Being a local, I appreciate the base commander welcoming the local golfers.
Nice course, some greens were bad
Good course, tough layout because of the hilly terrain. Would play here again if the greens were in a little better shape. One looked like it had just been through an earthquake. All in all, great for the price but won't blow you away.
So so round
Course was interesting. Some tee boxes were decimated. Greens were aerated sometime in the past so were extremely bumpy, so putting was crazy. Pace play of play is only dictated on this course by speed of players in front. There is no course management. There were three players in front in carts who were agonizingly slow. Marshall said he talked to them several times but really couldn't do anything about it. He said he was going to quit next year because he couldn't stand it anymore. What can I say... you either have speed of play rules or you don't.. This course does not.
Up and Down, forgiving fairways, but plenty of challenges along the way.
Great course for the price. Some fun holes with steep hills. Wide fairways on several, though we found many places to lose our balls. :) The staff was friendly, course had great views and the price was awesome. The greens were being aerated, so I rated the conditions lower, but I appreciate they keep up with maintenance.
Good and Bad
Course was redesigned to accommodate land taken away to build an Army Museum. Resulted in shorter holes overall with a few more par three holes thrown in. Otherwise a nice course as military courses go. Tee boxes were mostly crabgrass and the fairways have some rough spots as well. Very hilly with a lot of trees, so is challenging in many ways.
Updated Review
Gunston Course has been redone since I first reviewed it. It went from a difficult outstanding course (par 72) to a short, not too difficult course (Par 70). The fairways are not in good shape. The greens are very slow. Hopefully, it will be in better shape next season.
Needs attention
Good value if Hot Deal...bunkers and greens in rough shape. Staff friendly, good pace of play for weekend.
Still not worth it
Relatively cheap to play. Practice green is not the same condition as the course. Driving range is fine. Staff is friendly. No cart girl. Not close to the clubhouse at the turn. Can't find even ground on the tee box. Every tee box was in bad shape. Ball will skip on the greens. Thick rough with patches of clovers all over. Who has a tree in the middle of a fairway?
Ft Belvoir Woodlawn Round
Played the Woodlawn course in the middle of the week for the Golf Now price of $15.00 (including cart). Course was in fair shape, except for number 14 which seemed to be a hole they just made a week ago from someone's pasture. Greens were mowed close, dry, hard and not unlike putting on a pool table. For a military course with lots of traffic, the course was in reasonable shape and the only real hassle was my Garmin taking me to two gates to the base that seemed to have been closed quit awhile ago. All in all, this was a very good deal for the money and worth playing.
Nice layout, Weak Management, Not for Women?
Course in OK shape. Lots of poor conditions around the greens with weeds and bare spots. The layout is tough, but it has many holes with beautiful vistas and nice contrast of bright white sand and lush green fairways. Back nine was very quiet once away from the road (#10).
Management is lacking...had to wait for golf cart keys even though there were dozens of carts sitting at the starter's shack. Never saw the drink cart close up, only at a distance.
Played with my wife and we agreed it was the least ladies friendly course seen to date. Many holes had no red tee markers and several had markers in the middle of nowhere or on unmowed tee boxes. Irritating and maybe intentional?
Horrible course. Will never play again
I wish I could get my money back. Layout is horrible, course is not well kept, construction makes it all worse. Greens are terrible. Tees have odd locations. Not to mention it took us over an hour to get into the fort. The course should email you to tell you where to go. We followed Google maps. Took us to the wrong gate. Then they sent us to another gate. 25 min later at that gate turns our we needed visitor passes, BUT we had to get out of the car park somewhere else, go into a visitor center, provide our IDs and SSN # then wait for pass then get in. Only good thing about this place was the staff and you get free range balls included. WILL NEVER COME BACK. WILL TELL EVERYONE TO AVOID. WISH I COULD GET MY MONEY BACK. worst course I have ever played. Cheap for a reason but not even worth the time and effort
AVOID
In order to accommodate the construction of a museum on the property, they had to reconfigure the course. It certainly feels like the person who did the reconfiguration had no experience in golf course design. There is no flow between holes. The course is now par 70 because to fit in new holes in the same area, they added par 3s. Currently, on Gunston 5, there is a 30' strip of mud and construction barriers between the fairway and the hole, all without any notice online or when paying. AVOID. They need a complete course redesign before the course is worth playing.
Difficult to get in golf course
I would rather not visit this golf course again as it takes quite a lot of time to get in because of it being military location.
Golf course layout is good.
A challenge, but not much fun.
This is a tough course, but unless you hit it straight and long, it's not a fun course. Stay away if you're a beginner, even if the rate is appealing.
Very wet, had several plugged landings.
The course was wet due to rain but still playable. First time playing this course caused some positioning problems but you get that on any first round. Pace was great until the last few holes when I caught a slow group and that resulted in getting hit into twice. Greens were a little shaggy and slow at first but turned to normal after a few holes. May have been due to the rain and drainage. Many trees line the holes but still give you a good pathway to the green. All in all I liked this course and may come back in the summertime when they can have pristine conditions. One other thing to remind the general public, this is a Service Base, leave extra time to find your way there, my car GPS kept wanting to take me to the wrong place and once you do find the gate you have to park, go inside, and have a background check done on EACH GOLFER, to get past the gate. I don't know for sure but you may be able to call ahead to get that done. If not it takes about 15 minutes for each golfer to get through the background check. Leave plenty of time or try to take care of that before you go.
Good value
Greens are slow but interesting on Gunston course. While course is short it requires thoughtful club selection. If crowded be prepared to wait. Since they allow single and twosomes off you might want to join odd number of players if you don't want to wait. Starter is friendly and helpful. If you don't control your shots you can lose balls and slow play. I would definitely play the course again.
